I asked Google and it says the quote is from Mark Twain and originally referred to New England, although the sources I found suggest that attribution may be suspicious as well.
As a New-Englander, I've heard that quote my entire life, but I didn't bother to ponder whether it was originally referring to this area...or who penned it.

Snow.

I'm with Garrison Keillor on this topic, myself - you need winter to remind you that life is, in fact, fragile.

No, it needs to be more personal.  The ache in your back after shoveling, the pain in your knee from the cold, the dead rabbit sticking out from the snowbank.

Winter is something that's not too hard to fight off, but still feels like a successful battle nonetheless.

I know right? I'm adamant about my distaste for winter, but go on about how I love the heat of summer. I'd love it a helluva lot less if I couldn't escape it sometimes.

That's not been unusual for our area of the country the last few weeks though, has it, Hodgy?

Tell me. It's fucking snow outside. Again. I repeatedly thought that spring was finally coming during the last few weeks, only for it to be canceled out by snow again.

Maybe I will put off my expectations of spring weather. Till. August or something.

Today the temperature is zero in Oxford; this date last year it was over 20, and we were out in T-shirts and shorts.

It has been warming up around here, but there's still a LOT of snow on the ground. We're supposed to start seeing temps in the 40's (about 4-5 C) by next weekend, so that stuff will probably be slowly melting.

Can't happen soon enough, but it's gonna get muddy around here for a while.

Yep, we've got the same thing. Can't even get out of the parking lot, so I'm missing my dental appointment and I'll be late to work. Who knows if we'll even do the whole Seder thing tonight, if it goes on like this much longer.

Some light flurries here in Connecticut, but nothing that sticks to the ground anymore. I'm just waiting for the Easter Bunny to turn up somewhere downtown, frozen solid and clutching a basket full of frozen eggs.

Duh, it even says that in the title. *bangs head on desk*

no worries. just wanted to announce some good news.

Snow is melting here making for a cold, muddy mess. At least the moisture should be good for the mushrooms when it warms up just a bit more.

It is 30C (86F) today. In the inland suburbs it is forecast to be 34C (93F). In late March (equivalent of late September for you Northern Hemisphere types).

Though I handle cold a lot better than many people. I'm in a short sleeved button-down shirt and an elbow-length-sleeve cardigan. And, you know, pants.

Boiled Dove, I'm glad to hear your good news!

We haven't got much snow on the ground here (mostly just tiny bits left over from last week) but we keep getting tiny flurries that last five minutes and then stop. My dad, however, has six foot drifts and three foot standing snow.

Ours has finally melted! Again.

I'm keeping my fngers crossed that our last storm was the end of winter since it's now 60 F. However, the same thing happened after the 2 storms before that so who knows?

80F here today in Oklahoma, though in typical fashion, it's supposed to be cold again by Monday. And I could write a vitriolic post about my roommate who keeps the thermostat above 80F and changes it back every time I try to change it to a reasonable temperature...

Early morning it has been about 10 below (low teens on the Fahrenheit scale) for most of March (colder on some days). Very unsual. Presumably due to a particularly obstinate arctic high pressure air mass. Early afternoons it does warm up above freezing. Which is kinda bad in the sense that it ruins the ski trails.

Spring is coming all right (heard birds singing just the other day), but ever so slooooowly.

The signs are all around.

It has been 6 days since I saw the first robin.  The goldfinch boys are almost done changing color.   The crocus are in bloom.  The other spring bulbs have pushed their first green points up from the earth.  The trees have their first buds and by the end of next week should have the green glow of tiny new leaves.

It is spring in SE Michigan.

And I'm in Tucson sort of enjoying the warmth but wanting to be back in Michigan, hoping this spring to get a start on outdoor work. Which would be kind of a self-improvement miracle, since it seems like I haven't been very good at any sustained effort in the last couple of years. In any case, I'll be back in a week or two.

I don't notice the arms, but I observe a mostly Happy Hour every afternoon with a conservative crew. The loudest is a retired Air Force colonel, a U2 pilot in his time, whose anger with Obama, bureaucracy, Islam etc. says he doesn't take to change very well. The other loud member of this group is also about 80 and well into Alzheimer's. Their wives are quieter. I'm the only liberal in the group, so mostly we know to stay away from politics. An interesting development in the past three winters is an influx of Newfoundlanders into the condo. They're far more liberal than the long-timers, and friendly.

One side effect of having a roommate who keeps the apartment at sauna temperatures is that I have to keep my window open at night to avoid baking. Which means that I hear my neighbor's weather radio blaring in the middle of the night. Which is why I'm up at 4:30 in the morning. It was an entertaining storm at least. Looks like it snowed outside with all the hail. And I verified that my car is okay at least.
