Oh god it's supposed to get up to 86 F here this weekend and I'm gonna die.

Guess this means I have to shave my legs and wear... shorts...

We had 28°C/83°F today, and now have a relative humidity of 98% at 20°C/68°F at motherfucking 03:45 am. We aren't living in a fucking rainforest, but it sure feels like it. How can sheets be so sticky? Also: why do I have to fucking sweat so much?

This is why I love fans. And sleeping naked. I usually have the fan turned on high, directed on me, with just a sheet so I don't get too cold.

You can also try a cool shower.

We don't have a fan. Our fan is broken. We never came around buying a new one. Also fans are loud, and I can't sleep with a fucking fan on. I also took a shower and started sweating again while toweling. I fucking hate the summer. But that's not news.

Edit:
so I don't get too cold

I have much less trouble coping with "too cold". Last winter I didn't turn my radiator on, and routinely slept at 16°C/60°F.

I generally prefer sleeping when it's cold as well, I just get way too cold if a fan is blowing directly. I have a new window fan that is quiet but with just enough white noise to help me sleep. But then I listen to music while going to sleep most nights - including metal.

So on Saturday, in Kansas City, a storm blew through.... the thunder from inside the convention center was an interesting sound, half the lights went out, and the roof sprung a few leaks (some tests got wet, we were grading AP exams).

Then the bottom floor got a few inches of water at one end...

Then it was over.

Also fans are loud, and I can't sleep with a fucking fan on.
If your fan is noisy, it is too small. You want large and slow-turning. Permanently installed ceiling fans (up to 1.8m diameter) are the gold standard, but not practical for everyone. There are large (up to 750mm diameter) pedestal fans available here, where temperatures regularly exceed 40C in summer, but I don't know what is sold in Germany.

My desktop computer has a very loud fan and I've found that over time I've become unable to sleep without the sound of it. That computer also tends to make my room about 5 to 10 degrees (F) warmer than the rest of the apartment, which might be part of why I tend to get into arguments with my roommate about the thermostat.

Or you know, use fanless air ventilators...
Have you ever listened to one of those Dyson things? They employ jets of high velocity air, and are far from quiet. Fanless is a very dubious claim anyway. They have internal fans to generate the air-jets; you just can't see them.

Today it is just 16 degrees here (I'm in Devon at present) - and I'm wearing shorts.  Tomorrow will be cooler - and I won't!

Speaking of fans, yesterday I helped install a new computer cluster at work: loads of tiny fans which make an insane noise - I think this half-full rack has doubled the noise level in the computer room (which has 12 racks).  To give an idea of the amount of hot air to be moved, the current drawn by the rack when running its full-power benchmark is 37A (at 240V); we had to have a third air conditioning unit installed before we could install the cluster!

Mother Nature hasn't cancelled Oklahoma's summer, but at least it's not as bad as it was the past couple years (so far). The forecast for the next week is only 95 F (35 C) every day.

And it rained too; I hadn't mentioned the rain? - well, it rained.  And it was cold.  And now I'm wearing my shorts again, because my jeans got soaking wet; in the rain (did I mention the rain?).

Tomorrow will be the same, but I'm going back to Oxford, so that might be a bit better (less rain; perhaps).

Supermoon is super.  Outshines the streetlight on our corner (double shadows).  Walked the dogs to a dark area near the railroad tracks, it's clear as day out there.

It's also called the Strawberry moon (US), or Rose moon (Europe).

It was supposed to reach a high of 120 F in Phoenix today. (That's about 49 C for those of you elsewhere.)

Michigan's been weird. Wednesday was one of those rain-teasing days, but it didn't actually happen, which was good for the fireworks. Thursday ended up with a deluge and lightning that sprung up out of nowhere around 5-ish. Friday was Rain for 20 mins, sun for 40, then rain again for another 20... And today was perfect. Absolutely perfect while I was at work for 12 hours.

Shit that was a cool day in Yuma. I think our record for a recorded high (on the flight line, which is always approx. 10 degrees hotter then the "normal" temp) was in the 140s. It was frigging miserable working outside in those conditions.

In other news it's raining a lot here. Thank the goddess.

Quote from: Wikipedia
On July 28, 1995, Yuma reached its all-time high of 124 °F (51 °C).

But that's beyond fun anyway!  And of course a microclimate, on a base for instance, could go higher locally.

I know we hit 140 on the flight line but it's not the actual temperature per say, it's the actual temp being super boosted by the massive slab of black that is the flight line. So it's very, very local to the flight line and attached hangars. They have the same issue at Sky Harbor now and then and actually have to shut down flight operations because it's literally too hot for safe operation.

Yeah, I guessed that was where the discrepancy came from, as I hinted.

19 firefighters died fighting a wildfire in Arizona. A couple of my uncles back in the day, and a couple of friends in more recent times, have spent time in services where they had to fight wildfires, and I keep hearing how brutal it can be, but this really brings it home that sometimes, there's nowhere to run.

Aside from stories of the unbelievable heat, they all also talked about how the best meals they've ever had were at base camp -- high-quality steaks etc., and as much as they could eat trying to keep up with a 7000+ calorie a day demand from their bodies.

To fallen heroes.

To fallen heroes.
And, in Australia, remember that the vast majority of bush firefighters are unpaid volunteers who routinely risk, and sometimes give, their lives in public service.

This has been in my mind since the loss of the Mountain Hotshots.  I tend to think in song.

Unfortunately, I couldn't remember the name of the song or the artist (this isn't the original version, but it's a damned good one).

I want to move to England. I hate summer so much.

I will have you know we've heard about this 'summer' thing.

Ugh, this multi-week cycle of pop-up rain is annoying to plan around.

At least it means that the high chance of rain for a multi-hour period doesn't actually apply to the whole multi-hour period, just for the one 5 minute squall that happens, and then everything is fine. So, covering my recumbent trike's seat is enough if I, say, cycle commute.

By repute, that is.

(Actually, it was 28C here all day today.)

Aside from today and apparently Wednesday, this coming week looks like it'll actually be seasonable, upper 70s and low 80s. Maybe if I get a day off, I can finally play some more tennis.

Picked up a racket on the cheap over Memorial Day weekend, and between work and it either pouring or being 90F, I've only managed to get out and play twice.
