But i din't want to see snow! I don't like snow unless I can ski on it, and I can't do that in Glasgow. So I'm perfectly happy with this.

The weather forecast said flurries tonight. There is already 2 inches of snow on the ground after less than hour. My Friday night get drunk plans are officially ruined because of the road conditions. They were not salted and have not yet been plowed.

Soo, who wants to trade their weather? I'll happily trade a blizzard over the bushfire burning less than a kilometre from my house.

(For the record, I'm not in my house, I evacuated, but still.)

Snowed in by a totally unexpected snowstorm. This hasn't happened since I lived in Cleveland with the lake-effect snow.

The forecast lies again, it said "AM snow," it is no longer AM and it is only snowing harder.

It hasn't rained or snowed here in a few weeks, and we're not supposed to get any more in the near future. Instead there are warnings about wildfires, given the dry and windy conditions.

The snow has stopped up here. We have some snow banks that are several feet high. Unfortunately, due to the "creative" way they plow, the roads underneath the snow have a layer of ice on them.

Wife and I both drive through the same intersection on our way home, both of us having to stop to turn left. We both slid trying to stop before we turned.

I would say that only massive quantities of salt would prevent snow from being packed into solid ice under the weight of cars and trucks. A regular plow truck is good for removing snow, but can't efficiently scrape off the ice. You need a fleet of these monsters, and more time. Sorry, I don't know what they are called in English.

The Northern Indiana solution: use that salt. Guess what the engine on my Chevette looked like after a couple of winters. And you need to do nearly all the roads.

The Finnish solution: studded wheels for everybody. Not without costly side effects either as the studs wear the paving a bit on those days, when the road is clear of ice.

So a communal solution or people relying on themselves? Pick your poison.

One useful trick with Wikipedia is if you don't know what the word in another language is for something, you can look up the article for it, and there's often links in the left column for the article in other languages. In this case it leads to the article for "Grader".

It didn't start snowing until 11, I was expecting overnight snow and no morning classes. Now it looks like all-day snow and no afternoon classes. This makes me the sads because Soledad O'Brien was supposed to come give a Martin Luther King Day speech and it will probably be cancelled now.

EDIT: Yep, it's been postponed to an undetermined date. It's not awful here, but her twitter page said she was in New York, doubtful any flights are leaving there.

Hahahaha I can see these poor bastards outside my window trying to smoke a cigarette in this weather. It's an allyway too so the wind is just destroying them. I've never been a tobacco smoker so I can't really empathize, but you couldn't PAY me to be out there right now. It is 3 above, snowing, and there's 20 MPH winds.

All classes before 11 AM are cancelled, leaving me with one class in the afternoon.

I get an e-mail from that professor saying he's snowed in (things are a lot worse in the western half of the county, up to a foot as opposed to just a few inches here) and that class is also cancelled.

Despite the cancellations, I do still have to head to work in a bit, which is what I get for signing up to be on "snow crew."

6 degrees - but light snow. That's on top of what's already on the ground. I think we've got a good two feet of snow cover at the moment.

An aside: on my way home from work this morning, I had to turn two blocks early because they were removing snow at one of the three intersections with stoplights in our fair city.

They use a dump truck, a grader, and a huge grinder-like snow blower to do the clearing of city streets. And that's not even to the pavement.

Funny post from a facebook friend

Quote
Are you cold? Dreading that walk to class in 6 degree (-11 with wind chill) temperatures? Then you should take a look into my new self-help program: "Don't Go To Fucking Class You Dumbass; You'll Die Of Frostbite!" The program is aimed at dissuading young, eager minds from diving into the blistering cold because university officials who lack nerve-endings told you to.

On a related note, I can't tell if it's still snowing or if it's just that windy.

Couple of inches of snow fell yesterday as the temps dropped.  Evening walk for the dogs?  It was -5 F.

I have poor circulation.  Two pair of socks, one of them fleece, thinsulite boots, two pair of gloves (fleece lined leather over knit), and after a short (10 block or so) walk, I couldn't feel any fingers or toes.

I would be immensely grateful if all British gays, lesbians, trangendered, perverts, degenerates, the kinky, atheists and in fact anyone who isn't a morally obsessive, uptight, sexually repressed Christians could hold off from any acts of sex, love, affection, intimacy or enjoyable social interaction until 19.00 tomorrow that would should ensure me a nice dry run.

Damn, I'm so jealous.

I like Winter. It's my favourite season. I like frost, I like snow, and I love th ye clean dry air.

Sadly where I live now is one of the warmest cities of Germany. It still feels like Fall here. I really had hoped to have at least a small bit of winter. Maybe two or three weeks with frost during the day? Would have made me happier.

Instead it's just a bit more rainy than usual. At 5°C. I want -15°C!

I'm so incredibly afraid of the summer.

Just a little bit of snow today and everyone was driving way too slow. I basically drove the regular speed limit with no ill effects

Though later in the day we got hit with a sudden blizzard, almost a white out. It came out of nowhere, one minute it was a clear day and the next it was snowing side ways and covering everything.

In the bleak midwinter
frosty wnd made moan;
ground was hard as iron,
water like a stone;
snow was falling, snow on snow,
snow on snow;
in the bleak midwinter,
not so long ago...

It started to warm a bit, just enough to snow - occasionally heavily - for the last two days, a total of about 6 inches.

And now it's getting colder again.  Monday night's gonna be negative again, high Tuesday will be "around 10".  That's Fahrenheit, the low will be about -20 and it will warm up to just below -10 C.

My furnace hurts.
