Yup.  Where I live gets a bit of lake effect sometimes, I think.  Not as bad as places like Buffaly NY or Barrie ON.

-12 F was too cold for my car, even with a new battery.

I really should've called off work, rather than trying to cycle in. (And it was -16 at work, too, when I got here.)

We're going to be getting up into the teens tomorrow - but that's when the snow starts.

I'm at the beer barn, and the heat's broken.  It's 50 in here, 3 outside, and the cooler's just below freezing (it's on the outside wall).

Thank god for this little space heater...

Ice cold one, anyone?

I am not a doctor, and you probably know this, but for the sake of others:
If it's really cold, you shouldn't try to get warm by drinking alcohol unless you are really properly warm. The reason being that alcohol enlarges your veins - so your blood and body core get cold faster, while you feel warmer.

See e.g.: https://www.drinkaware.co.uk/check-the-facts/effects-on-your-safety/drinking-alcohol-in-cold-weather

I have an alarm clock app that tells me the weather and some headlines when I wake up. The recorded voice was unusually cheery this morning when it announced that "it is FIVE degrees!"

Looks like there's about two inches of snow outside so far. The forecast is 3-6. If this were Atlanta, the four horsemen of the apocalypse would be roaming around.

This morning weather.com said we were getting 6-10 inches of snow. The radio said 1-3 inches. When I checked weather.com again around lunch, it said <1 inch. It's now 5:30pm and even the rain has stopped.
On the upside, typical Maryland winter is back and my car is cleaner than it has been in weeks.

The fog is so thick that I'm afraid to walk to class (I have to cross busy streets). Normally I wake up to a beautiful view of the entire town. Now I can't see the road 2 floors below my window.

EDIT: Apparently it is actually "freezing fog." I don't know what that means but it doesn't sound good.

Apparently it is actually "freezing fog." I don't know what that means but it doesn't sound good.

Pretty much what it sounds like.  The fog droplets freeze into suspended crystals, so it looks a lot more... impermeable.  Everything it touches turns into something similar to a lightly glazed doughnut, only with ice instead of icing.

6 inches of wet, heavy snow last night followed by a goodly helping of freezing rain making a nice crispy crust.  Not enough for me to walk on top of it, but the dogs can.

It's days like today I wish I was more poetic.

There' s a fine layer of frosting on everything.  Deciduous trees look like spraypainted skeletons.  Evergreens are picturesque with their contrast of deep green and brilliant white.  Everything is white and pretty and bathed in sunlight.  It's gorgeous out there today.

Following on from the Thames flooding, this is a very telling comment from Guardian journalist Peter Walker via his twitter account: @peterwalker99. He was out in one of the flooded villages.

Quote
It's clear how little official assistance there is here. Help cries being investigated by only person in waders - a Sky cameraman

It seems that as with all severe winter weather, the UK is just woefully under prepared.

Chancellor George Osborne, meanwhile, said people understood "that the rain is not the fault of any one person".

What, does he suppose that they think it's the result of collective responsibility?  It's rain, for goodness' sake!

All evidence of the hour of snow we had earlier (which actually started to settle, there was a thin layer on all the cars in the street) has entirely vanished under the blaze of winter sunshine and blue skies. Go home, weather, you're drunk.
