Good news, everyone!  It seems our hurricane may collide with a nor'easter.

That is to say it's good news if you're nostalgic for Sandy.

I'm nostalgic for Sandy. But Sandy in my neck of the woods was an overnight blizzard followed by a lovely snow day, so I realize there are probably several million people in other regions of the East Coast that don't share that sentiment.

Speaking of hurricanes, Pat McCrory (who, for all his many faults, never fucks around when it comes to disaster response) has placed all of North Carolina under a state of emergency, and the semi-annual mandatory evacuation of Ocracoke Island has begun.

Day 9 (out of 40?) of rain began with a very cold mist. For the first time this fall, I needed a jacket. There is a flash flood watch that doesn't expire until Sunday night, and predictions are for the worst flooding we've seen since January of 2013, which is when this happened.

Oh, and it's homecoming. Should be an interesting weekend.

At 6:00 today, I left town and go down the mountain, as they call it, for a concert. When I left, it was a perfectly seasonal 60 degrees. When I left the concert in Charlotte at 10, it was a bit chilly, but not to the point where I needed a jacket.

I didn't even notice it when I was in the car, but as soon as I got back to my apartment and opened my car door I got blasted with it. It is 29 degrees. My apartment was a popsicle. Fortunately it seems the pipes are well insulated.

I don't actually have a thermostat, it's baseboard heating. It's about that time where I'm going to have to remember to turn it on if I'm not going to be back before nightfall.

It is 5 degrees Fahrenheit. There was ice on the inside of one of windows this morning. I have work at 9 tonight and I'm dreading going outside so much.

I just noticed the image I posted a couple posts up updates itself automatically. It was -10F this morning. It's currently all the way up to 2F, and it's supposed to be -7 tonight. I actually had to turn the heat on in my apartment last night.

We had a short. sharp and loud thunder and lightning show here last evening with plenty of heavy rain. Lasted about an hour and a half and you'd never know it was ever raining here as I looked out the window this morning.

Yeah, I was watching the weather report last night and the weather guy said it was going to be "an epic storm of historic proportions." Dude, it's 18-24 inches of snow. We got that lots of times when I was a kid.

18 inches of snow and counting. It is the most significant snow event in this area since Hurricane Sandy I'm pretty sure. Campus is closed. That's different from classes being cancelled. Campus closed means the dining hall, student union, library etc. are closed. It means stay the fuck home. So naturally I've just come back from sledding down the hill behind the school of music building. I think I may have twisted my ankle.

Tried to build a snowman but the snow is too powdery. There's definitely been worse storms. Just because the snowfall total is going to be higher, maybe 2 feet when all is said and done, doesn't mean this holds a candle to the mountain blizzards with hurricane force winds we've had in the past. When the windchill gets to -30 as it did one day last year maybe we can start panicking.

-30F, I assume. So it feels like -60, cause humidity is terrible and hard to adjust to. I moved to a humid climate, and the thermometer says it's warmer, but there is tiny ice shards in your skin. Back home may hit -30 or -40 Celsius on the regular, but at least it's a dry cold.

I'd be more concerned on those winds though. I'm glad that storm isn't as bad as it's been made out to be.

Roads are basically completely covered, winds have picked up a bit and now a rather large snowdrift has piled up outside my door, so that'll be a pain in the ass if I walk outside at any point today.

The one praise I have for Governor McCrory is that he takes disaster response very seriously. He asks for federal aid and offers state aid  for communities that need it (he gave state aid to the town of Kitty Hawk to repair unmitigated damages from Hurricane Sandy, which happened before he even took office), focuses on the safety of citizens and workers (checking in on the DOT and utility companies to make sure crews are being rotated properly) and isn't afraid to speak frankly.

He called people who go out driving in this weather without an actual need to "selfish," while that sounds harsh I'd have to agree. They're endangering themselves, the crews, and the people who for whatever reason do have to be out on the roads.

I have almost no food in my apartment, due to work and school I haven't had even one chance to go shopping since the storm was forecast. There are restaurants within what one would normally consider walking distance, but whether they're open or not will be crapshoot.

Looks like it may be a diet of ramen, pop-tarts, and potato soup for the next day or so.

You forget how much of a pain in the ass two feet of snow is when you don't get that amount for a couple winters. The storm is over and the roads are clear, but I ended up being late to work because it took me like 15 minutes to clear snow and ice off my car, dig a path for my car to get out (the lot had been plowed but there were snowdrifts on two sides of my car), end up stuck anyway, and dig some more. Snow piled up along the curb was partially obstructing a lane on one of the main roads. Also I'm pretty sure the available parking spots in this town have been cut in half due to snow piles.

This may be the first winter where I'm glad to be in New England and not a southern more area. We had about 4 inches here and most of it melted already...

I'd feel worse about telling you all of this, but as I stated, I am from New England. I crashed a car making a right turn once because the snow was so high...

It's so cold that I've had to engage the main-room heater in my studio apartment for only the 2nd time this winter. Usually the bathroom heater is enough to keep the apartment warm enough.

The wind is so strong that holding a lighter anywhere near the front door when a gust comes through will cause it to blow out, and it's supposed to be really windy all day, I'm half expecting to come back from work to find my screen door blown off its hinges completely.

My apartment faces south so it gets a lot of sunlight. Which is keeping my apartment so warm that despite it being 3 degrees Fahrenheit outside, I not only have the heat turned off, but I have the window open...

My weather is bipolar(forgive the pun). It was -4-5c yesterday, but -30c today, -18c tomorrow, then back up to -6c Monday..when I have the day off but everything is closed for the holiday. I wish it would stay cold so I could acclimatize.

Holy shit. We have a weather thread?

Anyway, it's a wind chill of -11F tonight in my part of Jersey, apparently gonna get as low as -20F (actual temperature getting down to about -4F). Pretty chilly.

Quote
The British sometimes use the terms together for emphasis: “Stop your whingeing and whining!”

I might easily say: "Stop whining, you whinger!".

Whining refers to the sound (which may or may not be that of a complaint), whereas in modern usage whingeing refers specifically to complaining in a whiny way.

Maybe it's a regional thing. Whining here refers to both the whining sound and the complaining.

Yesterday was a day of pouring rain and cold. So like any angsty young adult I spent the day watching the rain from my window and writing.

It was down to 40 f here, with some of the highest elevations being even colder and getting a dusting of May snow

Today was really nice here. 84 and sunny. I ate lunch next to the lake in the warm sun.

I'd happily trade you.  It hits 82°F/28°C for me tomorrow.
