I'm disappoint that I missed out on the entire whinge/whine conversation.

In Australia, we are firmly on track to see the warmest year on record, one year after the current record for the warmest year on record. Interesting times.

On the bright side, the weather in Sydney in recent weeks really has been pleasant. Unless you've been hoping for rain. Not so great in that case.

http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/sydney.shtml

You can believe it's autumn early in the morning, not so much in the middle of the day.

Sydney weather stations record coldest May morning in 20 years

I post this partly out of amusement that we've recorded our coldest may morning in twenty years in the middle of what will inevitably be our warmest year on record.

And partly so that most of you can point and laugh at what we Sydneysiders call "cold weather," even for late autumn.

Our cat slept on top of me for the first time since last winter, so that's the official start of winter in my book.

So we just had what is at least the storm of the decade so far. I was driving in it for a bit on my way home, the wind gusts actually were shaking my car, visibility was basically 0, and I had to pull over. As I was waiting for the storm to clear, which took about 15 minutes, it got worse. Tree limbs blew by me and pea-sized hail began to fall.

So I get home, there's a tree limb blocking my parking lot and tree branches scattered everywhere around my apartment. My storm door (which has never latched and always blows around during high winds) had someone been blown in such a way that it was stuck opened. And I had no electricity.

But that's not the worst of it by far. Our building is fine and I got power back around 9:30. But just 500 feet away from my apartment, another apartment building had its roof completely blown off by what may have been, but isn't yet confirmed as, a small tornado. What's left of the building still don't have power, possibly because the service drop for it has blown off into another zip code.

I found insulation from that roof 400 feet away. One of my friends had a top-level apartment and most of his stuff is damaged beyond repair. Parts of the roof fell onto cars in the parking lot and hit the building behind it, damaging its roof. which means everyone from both buildings is currently being made to find somewhere else to stay.

Thankfully no one was hurt physically. The fact that all the surrounding buildings including mine are okay just shows how random nature can be. Or how shoddy that building's roof job was,. take your pick. .

Weather can indeed be freakishly random. I grew up in tornado country. It's not uncommon at all to see a house completely destroyed and a house next door or two houses down completely unscathed. Nature is a capricious lady. Glad you are all safe.

The programmers of the iOS weather app apparently failed to consider that the temperature can go below zero (which is even worse if you use Celsius, since its zero is warmer)

I need to get some heavy weather clothes for New York in Feb. I hear that shit is cold, and I feel like the stuff I have probably isn't even enough for British winter  :psyduck:

It's not so bad in New York City (I'm assuming you're just going to the city, not upstate where it gets much colder), but it'll be cold compared to British weather.

Day: too warm for snow, got rain.
Night: dips below freezing, ice everywhere.
Next day: too warm for snow, still raining, but not warm enough to melt ice.
Next night: below freezing again.
Day after that: busy day at work from everybody sliding into curbs.

I'd quite enjoy a day of snow after a number of 40 degree days (that's a couple of degrees over 100, for the benefit of our imperial-loving friends).

New York was below freezing every day I was there, especially on the Hudson Riverboat tour where with the wind it was down to -14C or so.

Then two days later, on the last day we were there, it was 17C and so fucking warm that I nearly went shirtless in Central Park.

What the fuck, America?

It has been unusually warm lately. It's been 15-20C here in Wisconsin the past few days. Madison has set record high temperatures for three days in a row and it's likely to do so for two more days. Normal for this time of year here is ~0C high and ~-10C low.

edit -- to illustrate how unusual this is, I'll mention that on Sunday I went to the lake and saw people ice fishing in shorts.  :psyduck:

You might have heard that Cyclone Debbie, a Category Three cyclone (what would be called a hurricane in the USA, or a typhoon in Asia) has hit the Queensland coast. I live far to the south of the affected region, so I'm quite safe, but I'm worried about people up there:

Looks pretty intense!  The only acquaintance I have there is well north of this one, though (in Cooktown, north of Cairns), so I won't be getting dramatic pictures from him this time around, fortunately.

They're all different names for Tropical Cyclones  AKA Tropical Revolving Storms in different regions of the world.

That's incredibly strange. It'd be one thing if people around the world called the storm itself different names, but to have them just have different names depending on where they are? Why?

The naming schemes are determined by the weather organizations that monitor the storms. So, in the southwest Pacific, they're named by Australia's weather organization (don't know the name), in the eastern and central Pacific, they're named by NOAA, and in the western Pacific, by Japan's weather agency.

Haha, "naming schemes" sounds so sinister. I love it. But I don't mean the official names, like "Hurricane Katrina". I mean the idea that it's inaccurate to call that storm a cyclone or a typhoon.

I think it generally derives from the media sticking to the official names (with exceptions, such as Hurricane Sandy being called "Superstorm Sandy" by the media).

That's incredibly strange. It'd be one thing if people around the world called the storm itself different names, but to have them just have different names depending on where they are? Why?
The customary regional names for the storms were generally attached when global communication was much less, and there was no international standardisation. Often the names derive from local languages in the regions where the storms occur, which were adopted by Europeans who had no name for weather-systems that don't occur in Europe. As I understand it, "hurricane" is from hurakán, meaning "God of the storm" in an indigenous language of the Caribbean, and "typhoon" is from the Chinese 台风 or 颱風 (táifēng pron. "taifung") meaning "great wind". The names were also adopted before any scientific understanding existed of the common nature of these storms.

Very pretty snow this morning - but the main roads around Oxford have completely closed sections, so my intended trip to London (for a 90th birthday lunch party) is off.

I dare say that they'll get everything flowing again by lunchtime, but that will be too late for us.

Just this morning I had to give our rose hip tree a few shoves. So that it would shed the excess snow. Allowing the branches go up a foot or two so that I could comfortably pass under it. The alternative would have been to plow through and get some melting snow under the collar.

I'm comfortable with my borealocentric world view, thank you :-D
