On the other side of the Channel - yep, we've got snow. Just got my train cancelled because of it.

Snowed where I live yesterday, and kept snowing all day. It was beautiful, and made me feel warm and fuzzy (especially now my boiler's fixed). Snow makes me think of romance.

I realised the last time I had seen snow I was in Central Park. That was a cool thing to think about.

Today the college where I work was closed due to snow. Extra day on the weekend. I feel pretty great today.

Everything is covered in five centimeters of snow and increasing, and I still have to buy groceries for dinner. Crap.

It's only 8:30am and the temperature has already passed 35C (95F).

I plan to hide in A/C comfort for as long as possible.

I avoided melting by once again burning fossil fuels and hiding in A/C comfort. :p

Although I actually went for a run in the morning, but it was early enough that it was bearable.

If only there were some way to average that out with the -20 C that was outside when my train broke down and had no heat. (Illinois).

I travel with a space blanket for emergencies. I used it. Gave another to a shivering member of the train crew.

April in Wisconsin:

Green Bay got it a lot worse than Madison did. They got about 30 inches (76 cm) of snow.

Mid-30's? HA! Try mid-FORTIES.

But it's a dry heat.

Sorry, C. The heat cooked my brain.

I remember dry heats, when 32C meant 32C. I miss those days.

I will not try mid40s. I hate this province's weather as is.

25 C right now (that's 77F for you trans-Atlantic types).

Although they have put fire warnings in place around the country due to the recent weather drying out gorse areas.

If there were dry heatwaves like this more often, I'd actually be motivated to do laundry more often. Wearing my wet laundry is refreshing. Doesn't matter whether it's t-shirts or bedsheets.

Temperatures are going to go up to 33 degrees C by Friday. Every patch of grass that's not permanently shaded is already dead. Less of this, please.

Heh. "Only" 33C.

Try 45. That's what we're slated to hit today in the Valley (113 F). Hell, yesterday my car's AATR (aka "the outside air thermometer" read 124 F - or a lovely 51 C.

And as I'm writing this, it's already 36C outside.

Meanwhile in Madison, tonight's low is 63F (17C).

we've gotten rain for 17 of the past 20 days.
and I don't mean drizzle.
if it rains... we get gully washers that put down 5cm+ per hour.
then it goes back to mid 80s temp and mid 90% humidity.
we've exceeded our 'standard' rainfall totals for the month of July by nearly 50%.

And I have discovered the Time of Year They Don't Tell You About when you move to Arizona.

The time of year where you mistakenly believe that you moved to Florida, not Arizona.

Where the words "dry heat" are not mentioned, and you are walking around in what would be a relative humidity level that's considered "normal" pretty much anywhere else, except with 100F degree temps to go along with it.

Refrigerating eggs is a US thing. We don't do it in Europe.

The US require eggs be cleaned before sold, which reduces its shelf live, so they are refrigerated. I know the UK require eggs NOT to be washed before being sold which actually does increase shelf life of the eggs, so refrigeration isn't much of a thing.

Errrh, yes 'we' do? (though it is not mandatory for supermarkets over here, not really necessary, and not a good idea to boot)

Madison has had severe flooding recently due to a huge rainstorm on Monday, which dumped as much as 15 inches (38 cm) of rain in some areas. Latest developments is that the water level in Lake Mendota has risen so much that the flood control dam on the Yahara River has had to be opened to avoid overtopping, which is raising the water level in Lake Monona and by extension, downtown Madison. And on top of it, we're forecast to get more rain tonight and early next week.

Errrh, yes 'we' do? (though it is not mandatory for supermarkets over here, not really necessary, and not a good idea to boot)

That article (which neglects to point out one very important fact... unrefrigerated eggs 'peel' far easier after boiling...) I opened up two of the links on the page... one of which gave me this WONDERFUL "google translated" sentence...

"Only in storage, the ghosts divorce - may the fruits now in the fridge, right?"

:)

That's a sci-fi story right there.

Ah, the divorced ghosts... "da scheiden sich die Geister" is an old idiom meaning 'opinions diverge" - the literal translation would be "minds take different paths/part ways" (Geist means mind or spirit, but also ghost, specter)

I guess the sentence that gave Google indigestion is this one:
Quote
"Nur bei der Lagerung scheiden sich die Geister - dürfen die Früchte jetzt in den Kühlschrank, oder nicht?"

The  correct translation would be: ""Opinions only vary on the best method of storage - do the fruit belong in the fridge, or not?", or, more literal "Opinions diverge only regarding (their) storage - are the fruit permitted into the fridge, or not?"  (*)

Though I admit that I like Google's version better.   :-D

(*) Contemporary use of standard German is infuriatingly liberal with the term "dürfen" (being permitted to) in contexts where it has no meaning-, or where its use indicates a shockingly Orwellian mindset. An American free-speech enthusiast chafing at modern College speechcodes would likely weep bloody tears reading the average German opinion-article on ... pretty much anything. Like ... I am a goddamn' socialist authoritarian, and even I start hyperventilating at the implied suggestion of a moral or legal aspect to an individual's preferred method of storing fruit - To whoever ponders revoking my 'permission' to store bananas in my fridge, I say "From my cold, dead hands!"

Aaaah, literal translations of idioms. Always fun. In German, if you want to tell someone they're stupid, and/or crazy, you can say "Du hast ja wohl einen an der Waffel". Literal translation: you got one on the waffle.
