The more I learn about Germany, the more I like it. It sounds clean and tidy, and filled with fun idioms-all things dear to my prairie heart.

Which is desperately homesick, as the family homestead is cool and cloudy today, while I feel like a steamed fish. Why is the air so chewy!

Someone once said German is like word lego. Just mix and match your word parts, and it's supposedly a common practice.

What I am definetly guilty of, probably especially as Austrian, is building oversized sentences. German is definetly guilty of that, too. just adding clause after clause, nesting them within each other in a way you can easily get lost in a sentence that's like a whole page long. One thought, one sentence.

I dunno, I thought that Berlin was rather interesting, and had the right kind of crazy.

My current residence's tagline is "The city that fun forgot." I doubt Germany's worse.

I didn't say that Germany is no fun - I said that German society is a very carefully constructed one, and one that provides its members with a maximum of individual liberty by requiring they observe a maximum of unwritten social protocol. The crazy thing is that it actually works.

It's a bit like the "Individualists' Association"

Also:

"Elsewhere sucks, too - The Ruhr-area in the 1980s"

I dunno, I thought that Berlin was rather interesting, and had the right kind of crazy.

Berlin != Germany (Is there a superlative of 'not', and if so, what is its symbol?)

Edit: German society loosened up considerably over the last few decades, especially following the end of the Cold War. Compared to the 1980s, we're positively frivolous.

Well that's true. When I read "stick up the ass" I assumed you meant "boring and serious", as that is what people mean when they say it here. Or, you know, "have basic manners and consideration for others", which is uncommon in my chunk of the city.

It's forecast to get pretty cold here next week. Next week's forecast, according to the U.S. National Weather Service (temperatures are in Fahrenheit, -17F=-27C):

And in Wisconsin and Minnesota, it'll be even colder than here...

I'll remember that when it's 120 degrees in Arizona.

BTW, the NWS has revised Wednesday low down to -25.

that's 48C. Ick.

I don't mind the cold; that's Canada in the winter. But I am offended by a 20 degree difference between the "measured temperature" and "real feel". Humidity is the pits. And I'm bruised up from an outdoors lab that needed me to slog through all of the snow (30cm Wednesday, topped with freezing rain).

One year in Arizona, and I do not miss that weather. At. All.

70's for most of the rest of the week, and some scattered showers (we call them "random showers" around here) possible.

A correspondent of mine in Minneapolis tells me today is forecast to be -34C there, with windchill making it feel like -57C

C not F.

Here in southern Britain it's currently a couple of degrees below zero at night and above zero by day.  For us this is really cold, and there are warnings of disruption and the like.

Yesterday the Dutch railway company announced that they were altering the schedule and reducing the number of trains running because snow was forecast for today.

This morning there was a light flurry for all of 15 minutes.

We're no colder than usual; -17C or so. And it isn't snowing! For context, we've had the snowiest January on record, with 97cm. Yay.

Winter has arrived with a bang in the south-eastern UK. For some perverse reason, it only rains, sleets or snows when I am travelling to or from work or to and from my religious meeting place.

CBC cross compared the capital's weather to some  the other Ottawas in North America.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/warmest-ottawa-us-cities-1.4998644

Ottawa is simultaneously proud that it is one of the coldest country capitals in the world and bitter about that fact, I think.

And the entire fucking country grinds to a halt.

Weirdly enough my commute today was the easiest it's been since September because apparently loads of people were so spooked by the weather warnings that they just stayed at home.

I'm flying to Vienna on Friday morning.  Frankly, on the basis of the forecast I've just seen I'm not anticipating any real difficulty, but I'll probably give some extra time to catch an earlier bus to the airport (it's a direct bus from Oxford to Heathrow, and it runs on motorway for the entire journey once outside Oxford).

So my Mom has learned about Donald's tweet about wanting global warming back or something (I can't look, sry ...) and she texts me: 'This man is truly dangerously stupid'.

Never could argue with Mom.

I went in to work after the storm to check on the equipment. That was all fine, though getting there was interesting. All the traffic lights were out. Now, of course, what you're supposed to do is treat it as an all-way stop. At one point, I had to cross a six-lane highway. Five cars stopped for me. The sixth barrelled through at 60 mph and almost hit me...

And here I always thought that UK folks used Farenheit when it was hot, and Celcius when it was cold.  Then again, it was 20 years ago when I lived there, so things probably have changed.

I have never heard of this before, and it sounds weird to me, even in the context of 2020 when either nothing is weird anymore or absolutely everything is.

When I was young, from time to time the media would deem it to be notable when the temperature topped 38, which is around 100 F. And below freezing is also a thing, I guess, because 0 celsius. So... people like nice round numbers, I guess? Maybe that's what you're thinking of.

I still slip into Fahrenheit occasionally, but I think in Centigrade Celsius really.

I studied Engineering at uni in the 1960s, and in that field at that time there were huge shifts in the way units were used, and in some cases (electromagnetism in particular) there was a complete change of paradigm in the middle of the course.  So I learnt to use multiple sets of units equally, and sometimes simultaneously (e.g. thermometers with different units in the setup of a single experiment), which means that I became completely flexible.

This morning a train has derailed with serious injuries in Scotland.  The area has torrential rain and flooding, and presumably these are implicated, but at present the cause is unknown - the rescue of passengers is still in progress.

We are in for some warm late winter weather tomorrow here in Sydney, according to the forecast -- sunny and 25°C (77°F). Wow. This will be the warmest day this month so far, I believe. The hottest August day on record is 31.3°C (88.3°F).
