Saturday I had some very unpleasant stomach sickness thing* and I'm still recovering from it today. At least I can have things in my stomach now and not be nauseated by it.

*There has been a stomach flu wandering around work, but I don't think it was that because I had a stomach cramp for like 30 min and then FWOOSH my innards emptied themselves rather violently.

What I had sounded similar to food poisoning...but I haven't the slightest clue where I would have gotten it from. Michael and I ate the same foods and he had no issues whatsoever. Regardless, it sucked, and I never want it to happen again.

  • Must have tree blood!!!

Until recently, the targeted advertisement on the bottom right-hand side of the QC homepage was for new bathroom suites (which makes sense, because I have been searching for that) but lately it's changed to a picture of a slightly saucy looking woman of middle-eastern ethnicity wearing a black chador and advertising a dating site for Muslims.

Apparently the internet thinks I'm a Muslim?

Yeah I guess that explains it.

I just want to find out how it ends. Does anyone know where I can download the final episode? How many seasons are there?

I've been reading some stuff about Islam and its beliefs a friend linked me and I got a similar ad. Although it said, "The one your parents picked no good!?" which seems really, really off.

Seriously?! Wow...it's basically telling you to "stick it to the man" by turning down an arranged marriage. That's...disturbingly humorous.  :psyduck:

It came up on YouTube. If I see it again I'll printscreen it. I don't want to talk for another culture but I thought something like that could be deemed offensive.

Some people I knew in high school and uni were in cultures (some from Islam, some in other cultures) that used arranged marriages as a tradition. And some of them were opposed to the idea, but not all. I guess it's all based on an individual's take on the matter.

So I finally switched to a safety razor and soap lather for shaving a few weeks ago. I'm actually kind of annoyed that I didn't switch years ago now. It's smoother, it's less irritating, and while the initial cost is a bit pricey it's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying disposable heads.

I always liked doing the soap-lather, even with disposables.  I bleed less, for some reason.

+++++++

So I took the holiday and decent weather as an opportunity to fix the loose tie rod on the van (it's part of the steering, and had been caussing a pretty noticeable shimmy on the highway).  Get underneath, and find that all the shaking had loosened the other end of the tierod as well, and one of the sway bar links (all important stuff).  So the two hour job of changing out a tie rod took about 8 hours, an extra trip to the parts store, much time lost using a tool that didn't work (special tierod wrench I rented - piece of shit) losing and finding a roll pin that never made it into its designated place, skinning three knuckles and taking a bit off my exposed scalp when a wrench slipped and my head hit the edge of the wheelwell.

All in all, a good day.  $56 in parts, and a $60 alignment at a nearby shop afterwards.  Better then the $400+ a shop would've charged...

Still, owwies.  And I can never get my hands completely clean for several days afterwards...

I normally draw blood when shaving with a blade, which is why I've used electric shavers pretty much since I started shaving.

I sometimes get nicked doing my legs but I only do wet shaves on a whim quickly and inaccurately so I'm not surprised. I moisturise them after if I'm bothered to stop my legs drying out. I've got a skintag under my armpit that hurt like hell when I got it once.

Nicks and cuts happen because no face is perfectly symmetrical, and even the best razors are straight-edged.

I just can't get into electric razors.

Ack: What sort of upfront investment cost are we talking here, if you don't mind? Shaving is a huge part of my pre-social rituals, so am curious.

Not sure if you're in the US or not, but here's some links. For me it cost about $90, but that was going with some pricier blades. Even the pricier blades though are, at most, 40 cents per blade if you buy a 100 pack.

$36 Handle: I'd heard good things about this handle and it is a comfortable fit for me. It's apparently a good one size fits all handle.

$35 Blades: The price seems to have gone up since I bought them, but if you shave daily, they should last you a week apiece, so it's close to 2 years worth of blades. There are also much cheaper brands which you can get, as low as $7 for a 100 pack, but with how much I'm saving in the long run, I decided to splurge on the blades.

$13 Sample Blades: It's got one blade each of 16 different brands and it just gives you a chance to figure out which ones suit your skin and all best. Also gives you a wide price variety to check out. I just used them for one or two shaves apiece before making my choice.

$10 Starter Lather Kit: Alright, so brushes range anywhere from $10 to $200+ because people are insane. This set comes with a starter soap, a bowl and a boar hair brush. The boar hair is a bit stiffer than badger hair, but it's been comfortable for me. I'm thinking I might get myself a $10 badger hair brush at some point to compare, like this one. Also, I haven't checked out other soaps yet, but this one is pleasent. Fresh bars cost anywhere from $1.50 - $5 and it seems like a bar should last about a month or so. Maybe more.

Thanks. I am in the U.S. I'll keep an eye out, though since I'm (supposedly) starting some hair removal procedures soon I think I'll hold off for the minute. Appreciate having someone's first-hand input, though.

What style better as far as versatility? A) the blade & handle you mentioned, or
B) something more sweeney-ish? Like so.

because although I use a soap bar and boar-hair brush (that needs a replacement, all the bristles have started to fall out), I still use a gillette mach-3 razor, and I'm getting tired of it.

In the hands of an amateur, those can be extraordinarily hazardous.  My wife's a professional, and wields one well (mainly for necks after a haircut), but without a great deal of practice, you're asking for a lot of nicks or a poor shave, depending on the angle.

I can't really see any reason to use a straight razor unless you have a serious love of the artform of shaving, which is perfectly valid, or are a professional.

  • What's disease? Where?

For what it's worth, I shave in the shower nowadays (but not while I'm peeing, thinking of someone's recent post) and use a Schick Quattro razor (using a 4-blade cartridge) and lotion from an aerosol can. I have a light beard; if I didn't shave for a day and was about to set out somewhere, my wife told me she couldn't tell I hadn't shaved. It's light enough that I sometimes shave without lathering if it's within a day. And I do it by braille.
If I were really concerned about water and energy conservation, especially here in Tucson, I'd shave in front of a mirror at a sink. And then I might return to an electric.

I took the day off from lectures (one is miles behind what we've already covered in reading, one is so far above my level of comprehension that it's just a two-hour waste of time) and am applying for summer jobs. Lots of summer jobs! I'm trying to find something that will keep me in Cambridge for a couple of months, so that if I do get onto a midwifery course I have somewhere to live until it starts, and if not then I have a bit more time to find a permanent job. The application process is kind of boring though.

Slashdot is having a really pretty sensible discussion of an issue which has been of concern to me in the last week or two, as I run a mail server in that institution.

We've has a few google docs phishing scams come around at our university and if ITS responded by blocking access to Google docs there would be hell.  The number of group projects I have that are relying on it to co-write papers an maintain our data.... If an assignment were late because people couldn't access the documents at the time they had free to work on them it would be no small deal.

I think the broader question is interesting though, how to stop people from getting phished.  I think IT people have a tendency to just think "it is as easy as not being stupid." and that opinion is expressed at least once in that discussion. Claiming that people who fall for scams that get past their spam filters are stupid is like claiming that people who don't catch grammar mistakes their word processor doesn't catch are stupid.  It is easy to see glaring mistakes when you are and expert, but most users are not experts in this and have passed the responsibility to someone else, and that is where some of the problem lies.

Last year one of my classes did a design jam* on this topic.  Our task was to develop a solution to people clicking on phishing scams (in particular ones which had a "this might be a scam" warning on top, which people still click on at alarming rates).  My team's (winning) solution was a university wide campaign leveraging the group identity of being a member of the university to reinforce that being careful about email messages is a shared value.  We made used of our school rivalry to rename "getting phished" to "getting Buckeyed" and developed major specific messages which would resonate with specific values held by subgroups of our population (for example the one for English majors focused on close reading and analysis).  Then had the pop-over warning use the phrase "don't get buckeyed" to force a recollection of the rest of the campaign.  The last part though, was the weakest part of our plan for two reasons.

First, since our Email is maintained by Google, I am not sure our ITS department could change the text of that message if they wanted to, and second I still feel that having warning messages on some scams makes it more likely that people will fall for scams which have not been tagged with a warning.  I think seeing a message like that reinforces that someone else is checking your messages for scams and so you don't need to be as vigilant, but it is inevitable that some scams will get through.

Solutions which just reinforce "don't ever give out personal information based on an email" also don't work, because we frequently do have to give out personal information based on emails.  It just requires us to log into a secure and trusted site to do it, not to enter the data into an online form.  Once a year my University emails me to remind me to update my emergency contact information.  They are emailing me to ask me for personal information.  But, instead of a link to a form, I am required to go to the university website and log in. Simple rules have simple workarounds for scammers.  What is needed is a way to get users to think critically about each email.

Another solution offered on that was the "name and shame" which his/her boss is right to be against.  The number one rule pounded into my head in my Social Influence class (the one this design jam was for) was DON'T SHOW PEOPLE DOING THE BEHAVIOR YOU WANT TO DISCOURAGE. If you publish a list of people who have been scammed, or even tell people "yesterday 307 people were phished, you should be more careful!" you are reassuring them that this is normal, and it happens, and so if it happens to them they are not alone. It is miles more effective to make people feel like this is a behavior which is abnormal and which makes them different than most people.  If there is one thing people hate it is to stick out being 'worse' than their peers.

It is actually really difficult to develop a campaign which avoids showing an unwanted behavior: Smoking, Texting and driving, underage drinking....  PSAs about these almost always show someone doing the thing that is unwanted, and frequently they are the only person in the ad.

Anyways, I  have gone off on a really long rant now, and I want some lunch.

*I don't know if the phrase design jam is common outside of iSchools, or even outside of my school for that matter.  It is a casual, short brainstorming contest meant to find solutions to real world problems.  Teams of people with different expertise brainstorm, then develop a solution, get input from the larger group and then redevelop.  At the end all potential solutions are presented and voted on.

*I don't know if the phrase design jam is common

I've never seen it, but understood it on the fly without having to think about it.

On the block of Google Docs, note that this (a) was only for a couple of hours, and (b) was intended to be noticed - this is explained in the blog post linked from Slashdot.

A specific problem I had in all this was that one of my users' computers was (according to the central IT dept, who monitor the outgoing mail, and put a router block on it) infected with the trojan that this phishing trip was planting.  However, the user and I can find no trace of either the phishing email or any suspicious web site in her history - oh, and the university-licenced AV (Sophos) detected nothing, either.  I am really at a loss to see how it could have got in to this particular machine - if it really did (it's been formatted now, so I can't investigate further).

It won't take much more for me to have to look seriously into blocking outgoing access through my firewall except to individually approved sites - but I really don't want to go there, because of the nightmare of administering such a setup.

I work in the billing/credentialing office of a radiology company that was recently acquired with a couple others in the area. We had the same director/VP/manager of the office, a woman, for at least 15 years. She did a great job of it, too, and everyone liked her. Once we were taken over by the bigger company, she left, and was replaced with a man. He was nice, but didn't really know what he was doing.

This company, on the whole, is probably 75% women. There are less than 10 men in this particular office. They fired the old manager of the office a couple of days ago. Today they announced the new one - a man. From this office. What I don't get is, why wouldn't they hire a woman? There were at least two in this office that could have taken that job. This guy is also from one of the other companies taken over - which just irritates me more.

I realize that I don't know any details and I'm only looking at this from the outside. But I just don't get how they managed to pick another man out of so many great women.

OH and this is the guy that seems to ignore that my department exists. We were allowed a "dress down" day after the Ravens won the Superbowl, and he just... didn't tell my manager. He told every other manager, just not her.

I understand it was meant to be disruptive, but I am not sure how effective would would be at making people pay attention to their mail and not submit information to google.forms, while a disruption like that could have been a major problem for a group project.  Finding time to write with two other Grad students can be nearly impossible, and for many of my assignments with short deadlines (one-three weeks from group formation to deadline) we only meet in person once, and then use Google docs.  In these assignments the final editing is usually done at a time when all parties are available to log online and edit together discussing changes with the in doc chat function.  If there had been a two hour disruption which coincided with our scheduled edit time, it would have been more than a slight inconvenience.

I am not very familiar with the actual capabilities of the IT department wrt email management.  Would it be possible to just block access to google docs from within emails?  That is, make it so I would have to open a browser and go to a URL instead of submitting an imbedded form (someone in the thread mentioned preventing POST actions, that would be what this is, yes?) or clicking on a URL within the email.

That would mean re-writing emails, which would not be allowed under other rules; quite apart from the difficulty of reliably detecting those that need it.

Frankly it's hilarious to me that people are relying on the Google Docs program instead of an internal system, but I admit I'm quaint in some regards.

Though amusingly the university finally just contracted Google to handle their email service, since their internal system was shit. So uh...yeah.

Frankly it's hilarious to me that people are relying on the Google Docs program instead of an internal system,

When you have groups from several universities collaborating, it can be almost hopeless to get (a) those concerned to agree which university's systems should be used and (b) that university's IT team to give appropriate access to everyone in a timely and effective manner.  Such groups quickly realise that using an existing independent and free service designed for collaboration has obvious benefits.

My users are not allowed to do this, as there's no way we would get away with putting patient information in clinical trials into a cloud server however secure it might be in practice; but many other groups are not subject to the degree of regulatory control that mine is.

Google docs is my university's system.

the University of Michigan contracted their email to Google last year and with it signed up for Google Applications.  I now schedule meetings and reserve rooms using a google calender and collaborate with peers using Google docs.  Before the switch over to google I am not aware of any other content managment system that I had access to as a student.  Rooms were scheduled using a SharePoint calendar, but I did not have my own calender and I was not allowed access to the parts of SharePoint which would allow me to create and share a file library or work with someone remotely on the same document (which I am not sure is even a function within SharePoint), so we used Google docs anyways.  This way actually makes it easier to separate school files from private ones (I was constantly accepting Google doc invites with my private email instead of my university one). , and since it is synced with the university's user directory, I can search for the people I want to add without being sure of their exact email.

Unrelated:

I just noticed that the job I applied for last month with the county has been re-posted.  I don't know if this is a different position with the same job title, or the same one.  I never got a call for the first job, and this makes me anxious that they didn't get any applications they thought were worth pursuing (including mine).  I thought I was well qualified....

I am going to reapply in the hopes that it is a different position and maybe I will get this one.

I can search for the people I want to add without being sure of their exact email.

My university has this function buried deep in its computing service website and it is an absolute gem. Since I no longer have facebook, being able to search for someone's name and find a way of emailing them is invaluable. I honestly think that without it, I'd have had to reactivate my account just to be able to contact people I don't see regularly.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

  • I'm not crazy, I'm just a little Unwell :P

What Albion did when I attended there was just tell all the students to import a spreadsheet of the entire student body into their student address book and call it a day. It was extremely easy, as long as IT didn't accidentally upload the wrong spreadsheet by mistake.

My university has 43,000 students, plus staff and faculty.  Before this I think it was searching by department affiliation for grads and staff and for undergrads? s.o.l. I guess. Before websites grad students got physical mailboxes, but that is only for PhD's now.

So I did this on my blog. I'm not sure how I feel about asking for donations...
