Gareth sends email around people at work asking who wants to go for a drink this Saturday

Email includes the new girls from marketing

One of the new girls from marketing replies observing that she is 17 next month

Oops

Are non-alcoholic drinks an impossibility if you want to hang out with people from work?

I'm pretty sure that 24-year-old me hanging around in a bar with 16-year-old her might be a BAD IDEA

Well first of all strictly speaking in England I could fuck her without any legal repercussions.

Social repercussions are another question.

Also, I didn't find her attractive before anyway, I invited her along with anyone else who I thought was in my age group - including the other new girl in her department who I actually DO want to bang.

Well, carry on then.

Also, as a fellow 24 year old (well, 25 in about a week), don't you agree that even 18 year olds tend to look like kids to you now?

Varies. Some of them do, some of them don't. I've got no qualms about sleeping with an 18 year old in theory. Even people the same age as me can seem so immature that I see them as kids. It's about demeanour and attitude.

And also, to be blunt, about whether I just want to fuck them or want to actually get to know them and see if there's something there.

I dunno, maybe it's because my little sister turned 18 in January and I still think of her as a little kid.

I'm going to resist my every single urge to make a joke there, and observe that yeah I can understand that viewpoint, but luckily as the youngest in my family I've never had that problem

Well first of all I was wondering if your sister was hot.

Then I was wondering if you had a photo of her.

And then I wondered if your avatar already was a photo of her.

Not really a joke per se, I admit.

I have been against having sex with people under 20 since... well since before I was 20. Now that I'm nearing 30, there's no way I'd get near any of that. Boyfriend is 24 and still seems young to me.

I'm 24, and I've started seeing a girl (yeah, I said it; her name's Esther) who happens to be 18. She does look pretty young to my old man eyes, but not as bad as some girls her age.

Does suck that I can't bring her out to the bar for another 3 years, but that's no big bother. I don't go out every night anyway, and now she's just keeping me from wasting my money on beers at the bar.

My iPhone broke (wouldn't turn off - turn off sequence continued right on into a reboot); yesterday I had the opportunity to take it to an Apple store.  No appointment, but they found one for me (a cancellation I think).  Poked it a little, and then explained that the repair was to give me a new one - for free, as it was still a few weeks within warranty.

 :-D

Then, as they were finishing off, the entire store network crashed, and they had to finish up doing the paperwork on, y'know, paper...

  • That's a smashing blouse. FELLA!

My tutor went on maternity leave a couple of weeks ago. Our sub? Her husband. So guess why our sub tutor didn't show up this morning.  :-D I'm not annoyed but it they, as in the higher-ups or whoever decided he'd be subbing, should have thought of this scenario.
My classmates and I were joking that this was probably why the sub hadn't shown up and then someone found out so that was kinda funny. Some people said couldn't they have sent an email. Maybe? We don't know whether she went into labour at midnight or twenty minutes before class. Plus they live nearly two hours away anyway, in the Republic, so it's not like they're at the town hospital. In any case I'm fairly sure the students getting the classroom unlocked was one of the last things on their mind.

Nice one! A reflection, perhaps of the "unrepairability" of modern electronic devices? Or was it a software thing?

Or was it a software thing?

No, it's a known regular fault - won't stay turned off unless a charger is plugged in (and boots if it is removed); also power consumption rockets.  I asked the cause, and they said "no idea - we follow the flowchart and it says replace".

Quote

I was thinking I can bring my entire network up from cold (including the Exchange Server, which is slower than a slow thing to start and stop) in less time than I stood there waiting for the forms to be filled in.

The temperature has gone above 5 degrees for a few days now; it reached 8 here today (but still a night frost).

Let my daughter use my computer for a few last night.

She managed to get a virus past the antivirus software.  It said it killed it, but there were search redirects all the time - did a full scan, it said it found a rootkit.  Killed it. rebooted, and.... it won't.  Reboot.  Black screen with a cursor, even in safemode.

Using my other daughter's netbook to check in on my online classes.

No.  The machine was a gift, and I'm not literate enough to fuck with setups like that.

Off to a guru with the damn thing.  Gonna start with the guy who gave it to me, he rehabilitated it from another user - maybe he can do it again.

I wish I knew more about computers.  Then maybe I could make a decent living...

In other news, I just replaced a tie-rod end on my car, so I don't feel completely useless.

Reinstalling the OS is always an option, that just means all your data is gone.

It kind of depends on how much important stuff is on that HDD.

Not if you don't reformat the disk.

Quite right...as long as you have enough free space on the disk to reinstall the O.S., you don't need to reformat.

Ordered pizza via a website which serves basically as a proxy to a lot of restaurants and pizza places in the area. Ordered a pizza from Domino's. Website said it would be up to 45 minutes.

1 hour later still no pizza. Called the actual Domino's Pizza. They said they had never received the order from the website. Order pizza straight from Domino's.

Contacted website support. They:

They: "Domino's failed to confirm the order in time, but now received it."
Me: "So wait, does that mean the order is booked double now?"
They: "No, it isn't! Have a nice evening!"
Me: -.-

Called Domino's again to confirm that they didn't accidentally book my order twice. They said they didn't and that they'd throw a free drink of my choice with in as an excuse for the delay, even though it wasn't their fault. Needless to say, I wasn't frugal with tipping when they arrived.

TL;DR: Got free 1l Cola. Domino's is awesome.

I mean, we kinda sorta tip here, but not much. Usually it's just rounding it up a bit.

I am actually not really sure what is appropriate when having stuff delivered, but weather was a bitch to drive through, and I was really glad to finally get my damn pizza.

Normally, when eating out, I tip 10% and round up to the next Euro (or sometimes to the next 50ct). That usually comes out as roughly 15-20% actually, now that I think about it. (6€ + 0.60€ + rounding = 7€ = 6€*1.16666...=6€+16%.)

I usually tip a euro or two, depends on the situation.

I've tried tipping more at the Beer Temple in Amsterdam though but the barkeepers are too fast with entering the bill for my inebriated brain to deal with and I pretty much always pay with debit card.
It's hard not to drink 6 or 7 beers there and after that it tends to get a little difficult to do math.

  • No more Mr. Nice Bitch

So the last two weeks have been rough. Some of my friends were in a car crash (they're all fine, but it was pretty scary, I had three tests, and right before spring break started last week, I learned that I did not get the RA position. I've been stuck at home with nothing to do but homework that I can't really do because I don't have a laptop. So I've been thinking a lot, which really isn't good based on the events going on lately. I don't want to be big and famous.  I don't care about being an overachiever anymore. I just can't do it,every time I try to get All As or anything above a 3.5 GPA, I fail. All I want is to live my life. I don't think I want to be a science major, I've lost so much of my creativity the past three years. I do t know if I want to be some socially awkward science person or an outgoing artist type.
And now I have so much homework To do, but I don't have the willpower to do it

Sorry for the rant guts, I needed to vent

I tip if you do an incredible job, because in this country the tipping culture is not ingrained into wage structures like it is in the US. If you are just a good waiter/tress, then I don't tip, because fuck it that's your job that you get paid to do.
