*shudder* I'm ok with spiders but they always bite me when they touch me,  so I've developed quite an adversion to coming in contact with them.

They do. I had a bit of a bug fascination as a kid, so I know. :P Male and female spiders typically have some pretty significant physical differences,  even amongst the same species. Males are usually physically smaller than females. They typically avoid each other except to mate. Many species' females kill and eat their mates after mating.

Pretty close? Those statements are logically identical, since they contain nothing further. :-)

I think that any animal species with sexual dimorphism has to have a concept of gender, however primitive it may be. Hermaphroditic animals probably don't. It's certainly an interesting question.

Fact: They do. Humans are animals. I don't see any reason why other ones with sufficient brain-function wouldn't?

Sharks vs Canucks game 3 tonight, plus new Game Of Thrones.

I tried to go swimming at a friend's house yesterday but then remembered that I am shit-terrified of water. Showering is hard enough. Dihydrogen monoxide can kill you in a number of ways, and fuck that shit.

Also who honestly gives a fuck what spiders think

No doubt, considering humans have a hard time understanding the concept of gender as well. (I'm probably one of them.) But I think if you poked around a spider brain you'd probably find at least one neuronal network that's responsible for making boy spiders act like boy spiders and not girl spiders.

It seems nearly all pirate-related music is a blatant ripoff of the score from Pirates of the Caribbean. I was playing a flash game the other day in which literally every piece had its corresponding piece from PotC. I could hum along to it even though I'd never heard any of them before.

Gender, I guess? Or are you treating mind and brain as separate here?

As would I. Well, they certainly don't "understand" or care about whatever they do have, at least. Unless there is a distinct aspect of their limited functionality that could wire them differently as far as gender-identity is concerned, which would be interesting knowledge for sure. It's not like Gender is divorced from biology. I largely consider my transgender status an intersex condition of the brain, so, well, no reason their biology couldn't get wonky too if they have parts like that.

Nope. Nuh-uh. Not even close. What that spider can do is very impressive - almost as much as spinning an intricate web - but that is absolutely no indication of self-awareness.

It's a spider that knows what a spider is, and that it itself is in fact a spider. I consider that at least slightly self aware.

There is no evidence for that spider knowing either of those things. It is only a spider that knows how to make something that looks like a spider.

Was an edit, now in a new post:

Found the composer's site.
http://dominikhauser.com/listen.php

Look in the 'Pirates' section.
Attack of the Sea Monster - The Kraken
Pirates on the Ocean - Barbossa is Hungry
Off to Sea - Fog Bound
A Pirate's Jig (YMMV)/Drinking at the Tavern - Two Hornpies
Pirates to the Gallows - Hoist the Colours, though YMMV
Life as a Pirate - Yo Ho (A pirate's life for me)

Of course, this could all be fine, but some of it's very similar.

I'm looking up holiday flights.  On the RyanAir site I found this gem in the "hints on saving additional optional fees":

Quote from: RyanAir
Checked Baggage Fee -  is avoidable by simply travelling with no checked baggage.

Clever, eh?  Would never have thought of that.  The fee is £25 per 15kg bag per flight.

on greyhound buses you're only allowed one checked bag, and they charge some $20 per extra bag

so at each stop i just check a new bag in and say it's my only bag

and they tag it

and the people outside don't know or care if i've paid or not, so i just get a bunch of free luggage storage that way. (usually my duffel, guitar, and bass go underneath, and my violin, laptop, and messenger bag go on-board with me)

But, isn't that legal there now?

In bloggy news, I just wrapped up my third year in art school. Technically I have my degree now, but I still have a year left (honours year). Feeling relieved and exhausted, plus very, very sore. I had to carry all of my stuff home and wow, how do I end up with so many things? My room is chaotic and I need to find a way to store everything in one cupboard for the summer since I'm subletting, seems like an impossible task at the moment. I need to work on my Tetris/stacking skills.

I'm afraid the cupboard-size is fixed, since it's built into the room. it goes all the way up to the ceiling, which is quite high, so I think there's enough space. I did manage to squeeze most of my art supplies into a fairly large suitcase, it is so heavy I can barely lift it.

Edit: Here's my studio space at the moment, way tidier than usual:
