Speaking of long-form webcomics in the fantasy genre:
Have any of you folks read "Miamaska" or "Trial of the Sun?"
I lump them together because they're done by the same person, but update on different days of the week (much like QC and Alice Grove.)
Miamaska is the story of a girl from Earth pulled into an alternate (past?) world that has had its share of visitors from other worlds, not merely out own, and her struggle to try to survive in a world that's often very hostile to visitors. Meanwhile, the folks in positions of power have their own designs for those who keep showing up in their world...
Trial of the Sun is very different, taking place in a fantasy world where an entire nation of is protected and shielded by covenant with of a goddess from invaders (both human and monster.) In the aftermath of that covenant being breached, a young man (this world has an interesting cultural role for women who take a male role and swear an oath of military service) must undergo a trial by "fire" to protect his family. I really like this story because it's got some really great characterization going on in it, but the story is also pretty compelling, IMO.
They're both really great in terms of art quality and while both build very slowly, I think they do really good jobs at world-building and establishing some connection with the characters for the reader. TotS is one of my favorites, my second favorite webcomic (behind Unsounded) and I hate that it only updates twice a week (it's apparently gonna move to three times a week in a few months once the action picks up.)
(both comics also have, um, share, a really neat little fan community that I enjoy reading commentary from.)
