Have my first campaign game tomorrow.

The first four players to sign up are being pitted in a 4-player battle. And it's apparently my Sisters against Witch Hunters, Beastmen and Undead.

Should be fun...

Result of the game - complete and utter disaster.
I won't go into details, but suffice to say half my warband was either dead or so badly injured they wish they were dead. Can't replace the losses, so I'm going to have to retire the Sisters and start a new warband. Think I might go for Mercenaries this time.

Phew. Been a busy week on the painting front. I bought the chaos marines and cultists from the Dark Vengeance set second hand from another danish hobbyist. So far this week I have
Glued 15 cultists, 6 chosen, 1 lord, 3 terminators, 6 daemonettes, and one helbrute
Out of those I have so far painted 2 chosen, 1 terminator, 6 daemonettes. Additionally I painted some chaos marines that I had assembled earlier. I'm rapidly approaching being able to partake in small-point games.
I'll try to post some photos of my efforts so far tomorrow. I did a bit of painting when I was a young teenager, but that was so long ago that I consider myself entirely new to the hobby, so go easy on me :p

(Please keep in mind that I more or less just started the hobby, so I'm probably making a bunch of newbie errors. That being said, feedback is much appreciated)

They look good mate! Nice work! I'd suggest maybe doing something a bit different with the bone and horn...

Oh? Do tell? Some of these are earlier attempts. Atm for the horns I do them with dry brushing following the combination put forward in the How to Paint Citadel Miniatures thing.

It's just a personal thing, I'd probably do slightly different colors and washes to make them look more worn and beaten up.

I base with Rakarth flesh, wash with Agrax Earthshade. then drybrush with Pallid Wych Flesh and finally a bit of white scar.

Yar, like I said personal preference, I would try to work in a tan/yellow to give them a slightly aged look.

Hmm, just saw that Avatars of War are almost finished with their own version of Witch Elves. Should make for a better value alternative to the GW ones.

Small point value games can be a lot of fun. My FLGS and the girl gaming group I am in are hosting an Escalation League going over the next several months. We just had our opening event this Saturday and had a really nice turn out. We are starting at 500 point forces, working our way up 2500 points in 40K over the next few months. Over the course of a few hours I was able to get in 3 500 point games and a game of Warmachine. So they tend to play quicker, and you have to think a bit more about how you want your army to play and focus, instead of taking the best of what your list can field. I am also looking forward to getting Kill Team and playing some games of that for the same reason. I enjoy smaller skirmish scale games somewhat more than gigantic mega-battles.

Painting wise, my Eldar are coming along nicely (for the mentioned league). I was able to pick up a Wave Serpent this weekend, I am looking forward to adding that to my army when we go up to 750 points. I did see a picture recently that made me kind of which I had picked Chaos instead though. It was titled the 'Sisters of Khorne', looked to be kind of a Sisters of Battle meets Chaos. Though they did go for the 'scantily clad and sexy' style... Personally were I to make such a force I would rather see more 'angry, badass bitch' a look, as appropriate to Khorne Bezerkers. But I was thinking a mix of Sisters, Witch Elves, daemonettes and other manufacturer's stuff could be converted to make an awesome all-female Khorne army.

I usually prime all of my minis, resin or hard plastic or metal with Krylon ColorMaster Primer.
http://www.krylon.com/products/colormaster-primer/

However, with the crappy weather, I can't primer outside.
And indoor priming is NOT allowable by the mistress of the house.

So what do y'all recommend for brush on primers?

Here's the miniature in question. Guess I'm gonna have to fluff in some mutation and special power armor what with him towering over the rest like that :p His heresy brings all the daemonettes to the yard.

Yes GW primer is fine on just about any mini. I like Grog prefer Krylon.

As long as they aren't Reaper Bones. The plastic they use doesn't bond with primer very well, so it never seems to dry. They even talk about it on their page. They say the only primer that can be used is the Armory stuff, but you don't really need to prime them, they take paint well without priming. I picked up an undead queen from them a little while back, so we'll have to see...

krylon does a great job on everything I've tried.
? I don't think I've ever done a Reaper Bones.
Standard Reaper stuff (CAV, Chronoscope, Dark Haven Legends) all work fine with Krylon.
For me: it's a huge cost issue.
GW primer or Armory cost $15-$20 a can.
the top of the line Krylon stuff: $5.50 - $7 a can.
Additionally: one of my best friends is in the Paint Business (Glidden, Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore) since he was 7.  He's now older than me.  I've had him check and test the GW/Armory vs. teh Krylon.
Result:
as primer, they're functionally equal.  His opinion is that they are NOT worth the $7+ a can difference.
(course, then he tried to sell me HIS company's brand...)  :D

Might try to order some Krylon online, but I do also have to factor in shipping. I can mostly either get GW or army painter round here.

....oh, well in that case I think you might actually be SOL. I'd check out Euro specific hobby sites, I'm sure there's a recommendation for good quality primer that won't hit your wallet quite as hard as GW or Army Painter. Worst case we start a spray paint smuggling ring.

I have stuck with Krylon primer and dullkote for many years now as well. It's really just as good as the 'model' paints, but without the huge mark up. Just be careful what you pick up.. I've been known not to look close enough and wind up with gloss paint/primer before and that stuff just doesn't do the job.

For plastic and metal the imperial primer that gw sells works nifty. It's gw so it's expensive, but eh. It works.

Ooooh! What's this that has magically appeared on my desk? The start of my third Flames of War army?

http://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=3639

Ooooh. Bonus? It's the last one we had in North America. BAMCIS.

What's all in there?
1x Obersturmbannfuhrer Jochen Peiper*
6x Pz VI J
4x Ostwind SPAAG
3x Pz V G "Panthers" (+1 as above)
1x Pz Tiger Ausf. B aka "Königstiger" (with Fallschirmjäger escorts)

Joining my forces for my "complete" list will be:
1x Fallschirmjäger kompanie
1x Me 262 A-2a "Sturmvogel"
1x Skorzeny kommando platoon
2x Pz V G "Panther"
and then some artillery for flavor.
probably:
4x 10.5cm guns for now
and maybe I'll grab some Grille self propelled artillery later, just to keep everything mobile :P

Here's what my standard list is going to look like once it's all done:
HQ 2x Panther G
4x Panther G
4x PzIV J
1x Königstiger
2x Fallschirmjäger platoons
4x Ostwinds
4x 10.5cm guns in one battery, with OP and staff team
1x Me262a2 Sturmvogel, sporadic air support

That's more then enough combined arms to put out a serious amount of hurt, and even the light PzIVs can absolutely ruin any allied armor coming our way, the Ostwinds provide excellent AA and absolutely shred infantry and light armored vehicles, the 10.5cm guns can handle just about anything on the table in one way or another, but are particularly good at pinning down blobs of infantry, or giving me a valuable source of counter battery fire. (In other words, eat it commies!)

*He's riding a Panther G, and will stand in for my company commander in my lists where I'm not explicitly using him

can't you use the dice and token sets from non-SS units?

I agree with your reservations here: runes on a tank (meh), but runes on everything else...
we're here to have fun playing a game: not to offend every third bystander.
+ since you represent a COMPANY, it could be bad PR.

Why? I mean it's not like we don't sell the same token set on our website, and we have for years. I'm not offering that as an excuse I'm just saying I doubt my company is going to throw a hissy over my objections. This boxed army I bought was one of the last in the United States of it's kind. We are sold out and it was one of our most popular army boxes period, and the Waffen SS are one of our most popular armies, because, bottom line, they get all the cool toys and now, as then they were hard as krupp steel. I doubt the company would be mad about the PR either. It's OUR PRODUCT. I'm gaming with our product so why do they care? I can use the dice and tokens from wherever, they're basically decorative in the end. (The tokens that is). You really do need them to play effectively, and we have generics that are, imho, pretty damn cool, but people like their stuff to match their army, so we offer that.

http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=79&CategoryID=7755&PageIndex=4

I get the sense the company hand waves it all because the absolute bottom line is that that insignia is for the Waffen-SS, not the political group, Goering's perfect Aryan knights, but the German combat elite. Obviously people buy the product, so clearly it's not an issue for enough people for them to A. buy it, and not enough of an issue for enough people who don't complain about it. Then again Reenactors regularly wear detailed SS and Waffen-SS uniforms too. So *shrug* I suppose I'm probably just being sensitive, We have a new dice and token set coming out that's more generic and uses the more standard German "Herr" cross. I'll probably pick that up.

Reviewing our line, the tokens most likely to offend someone besides the SS runes, are Das Afrika Korps product, which has a faithful and histroically accurate image of that logo with swastika (most everything else we produce that would have a swastika on it is neutered) and the 2nd SS-Panzerdivision Totenkopf and 5th SS-Panzerdivision Wiking. The former obviously has the infamous death's head insignia we mostly associate with Hitler's death camps, not the Waffen-SS division, and Wiking has a Nordic Swastika as their symbol, traditionally a request for protection from Thor.

On another note from my research for building this army, the Schwere Panzerabteliung (German Heavy Panzer units, so in short, Tigers!) were incredible! Their totals from their inception till the end of the war was roughly 1700 losses (including vehicles abandoned by their crews at the end of the war, and mechanical failures) in trade for some 10,000 confirmed kills. Nazi fucks? Yes. Incredibly skilled soldiers? Also yes.

And such is one of the reasons I feel uncomfortable with historical games, especially recent history like WWII to present.  To much living memory history there. The other reason being that if I was going to do a historical army, I would want it to be accurate, which conflicts with my desire to be creative and stylized. I don't mind doing a Celtic themed army... but I wouldn't want to actually paint up a bunch of Celts, or Irish units or anything like that. Plus I tend to go for a cleaner, slightly simplified paint look instead of trying to weather my stuff and make it look realistic.

Normally I stick to pure fantasy or Sci Fi miniature games for those reason. DUST looks pretty cool, and Tannhauser. But to me they perch to close to the sci fi/historical line for comfort...

I find there's a level of creativity in making historical units look good, bringing them to life if you will. It's just a different kind of creativity. It's still quite satisfying to me to put a well painted unit of say, T-34/85s down on the table as it does a squad of Space Marines from my custom chapter. Weathering certainly isn't mandatory either.

Otherwise though... I find the military history of the second world war is something I can be very passionate about, I had relatives involved in both sides, I grew up with bedside stories about Tarawa and Saipan, not from the man himself sadly as he died before I was born, but it's family history for me, and even though the 70th anniversery of D-day is this year, and we're a full century away from the Great War's start, that history is very much a living, breathing thing. I think all the books, movies, shows, model kits and games like Flames all contribute to preserving and making that history live on past the generation that lived it, a generation which is quickly passing on from us. That's the thing to keep seperated with games like Flames, it is not history, it is inspired by history. Our books are chock full of history in every page, we employ a massive historical research team just to make sure we're on point, but the game is not history, and the history is not the game.

Re: DUST, I'd give it a second look in the next month or two Neko, there's gonna be some sick new starter sets coming out. Having read up on the plot and rules now, personally, I think it's far enough removed as to be more comparable to 40s and 50s pulp fiction and WW2 era Captain America comics. I mean for gods sakes the Axis (no longer Nazis) have zombies and intelligent gorillas fighting on their side and all the tech is based on alien tech recovered from a crash site or something ridiculous like that haha.

Mmm. I'll have to give DUST a look again then. I mean, I've seen it played a couple of times, but it doesn't seem as popular or well played at my LFGS as the Warhmmers, Warmachine/Hordes or Fields of War. I have seen and played more games of Dark Age than I've seen DUST being played so.. Yeah. Maybe new starters will peak more interest, because I do like the mixing of sci fi or fantasy with modern day-ish settings, ala Hellboy. Or just mashing the two together, ala magic steampunk/Eberron.

Hahah no it's brand new production, two of the official Flames of War paint sets. The full retail is $20 a box which at $3.30 a pot is STILL not bad.

Well, so long as I have my toy soldjas, I'm not bothered ;) I just finished doing two test-paintjobs of some chaos cultists. I'll post photos after the weekend when the gf brings the camera back home.

So as I paint this High Elf Prince on his Gryphon mount, idly planning a WHFB army to paint up at some point I realize I am probably going to die of old age before I finish my models. I also realize I don't play very much any more. If at all.
