I'm a writer, but I like talking too.
« on: 16 Mar 2013, 10:39 »

So is it ok if I promote my own blog? To clarify, I have a tumblr where I post all the poems, short stories, songs, etc I write in my free time.

If it's ok I will post a link to it here and ask for harsh but constructive criticism. I have no idea how to write a good song, poem, short story, but it's what I do in my free time.

There are some things to remember though...

I know, it's terrible, don't hit me!

I was wondering where you picked that up.
Then I realized I used it as my Homepage.
Meh.
Did you like it?

Hm. I'm sure I replied to you. Yes, I did like it, though I can't really say what it was I liked.

You could start by saying what you liked. There's quite a lot of content there.

edit: this makes no sense. What I meant to say was, you can start by saying which post you liked, as there is quite a lot of content on that page.

:D

I actually thought of QC when I edited that picture. Jeph has a tendency to light flat walls by making the upper half slightly darker than the lower and using diagonal lines to separate the two halves. I chose the exposure in that shot to mimic that way of rendering a scene.

It's the webpage on my profile. I wasn't told if I could post it, but Pilchard 123 figured out that it was my webpage.

Anyway, I'll post it again. Fair warning, there's songs, and the songs are horrible and cliché love songs. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Interesting stuff. I do get where you're coming from with the issues of updating. The only real motivator for me to update my blog is when I'm trapped on campus for hours on end because I don't feel like driving.

an excerpt from the blog:
(it reads better if you read it out loud.)

an ode to nostalgia.

Nostalgia is deconstructive.

It takes the real world, and replaces it with a convoluted representation of it instead. It idolizes an exagerrated and mostly finite past, antagonizes the present, and makes us afraid of the future. It fosters feelings of longing and despair as you realize the lost remnants of a jovial youth.

Nostalgia is reflective.

It revitalizes the past in light of current events, and makes us revalue our actions accordingly. It allows us to retrace our steps, follow the breadcrumbs that brought us to where we are now and which defined us. It allows us to muse over what - ifs and might - have - beens.

Nostalgia is steadying.

It is a reminder that the good is always possible and forever desirable. It is an anchor to thy true self, no matter how despicable your present might be. It can shed light to even your darkest moments and dreams. It pushes you to aspire to better times, and to reconstruct them as good as possible.

Nostalgia is what I am.
It defines me.
It weakens me whilst giving me strength.
It makes me stay true to myself.
It helps me see what I want.
What I truly aim to be.
And what led me there. Or whom did.

Nostalgia is what I am.
And I’d never want it any other way.

Thank you for leading me here.

there was fire in the chimney
on that lonely winter day
musky scents pass through the hallway
the day you chose to go away.

milky windows hide your eyes
the veil you wear a fit disguise
a thought runs through your broken mind:
"what am I doing with my life?"

staying awake feels like sleeping
you spend the passing hours weeping
you dreamed the dream of something bigger
the day you pulled the trigger.

I know you always dreamed of fame
more than two cents to your name
trying to learn the rules of the game
for your failure no one's to blame.

and when you're faced with resignation
you chose the route of isolation
you see the void that is your soul
and chose to fill it with a hole.

you loved to tell us a good story
and yours is one that ends today
not one of love, or of glory
but of the pain that's here to stay.

staying awake feels like sleeping
you spend the passing hours weeping
you dreamed the dream of something bigger
but when it got too big
you just pulled the trigger.

Is this. Er. Based on a true event? If yes, I am sorry for your loss.

nothing based on a true event. I've had some friends who attempted, both succeeding and not. But this is not based on those.
I am currently writing a story, and it involves the suicide of the girlfriend of the protagonist. I was trying to explore their story more, and this is what came out of that.

Very emotional, that's for certain. I won't say I liked it, because I try to avoid highly emotional stuff like that, as I hate how it makes me feel. But very well written, that's for sure.

To be honest, I didn't really like the -ame rhymes, and there are a few points where making the verse one syllable long or shorter would improve it for me, but I absolutely dig the "fill it with a hole" image.

Good rhymes are something that I still haven't figured out properly. I mean, I like them and all, but one stanza in my songs / poems always goes -ay -okay and so on.

Well, rhymes are something of a habit for me. At some point, it just clicked to the point where I rarely have to reword lines to go for another end word. Then again, I have a constant fear that this will become an actual habit, and I'll start repeating words. That, and I've been somewhat... creative with sentence structures on occasion.
Nice work with the vid ^.^. Wish I could sing -_-

Mister Medicine Man

Goodbye Irene
the cutest girl I’ve ever seen
Is there anything
I could've done to hear you sing?

Here comes the medicine man
saying stuff like “we’ve done everything we can”
and tries to save it with a deadpan joke
but all he does is choke

Does it really pain you to say that you have had it rough?
Do you really think that you have given her enough?
You say that life is tough.

But what have you done today?
Refused her treatment anyway
cause of politics and laws that you control

Mister Medicine Man
acts like he’s saving the world
but even if you could
I don’t think you would

To have or not to have
I think it’s weird that it’s the first thing you ask
It’s as if insurance cards mean hope -
you’re a fucking dope

Who gives you the right
to decide who lives and who just might
my little girl was putting up a fight
but thanks to you she died.

Does it really pain you to say that you have had it rough?
Do you really think that you have given her enough?
You say that life is tough.

But what have you done today?
Refused her treatment anyway
said her chances are so slim that there’s no point

Mister Medicine Man
stop trying to save the world
cause even if you would
I don’t think you should

To live or not to live
is that really all you can give?

=========

I also made a song of this.

What should we two do tomorrow
to get past all the hate & sorrow?
All you say is I DON'T KNOW.

Why are we two still together
if all we talk about is the weather?
All you say is I DON'T KNOW.

Wake me up, it's another day.
I have to waste this time someway.

But I've got nothing to do,
nothing to say,
nothing that makes me feel okay,
so why do I stick around with you?

Give me something new,
a reason to stay -
tell me why I shouldn't go away -
why do I stick around with you?

...and all you say is I DON'T KNOW.

I don't get why we're beginning
if we both know that we're not winning?
Now it's TIME FOR ME TO GO.

I guess I can't go on just giving
cause I don't really call that living.
And it's TIME FOR ME TO GO.

Wake me up, it's another day -
I'm going to waste it anyway...

But I've got nothing to do,
nothing to say,
nothing that makes me feel okay,
so why do I stick around with you?

Give me something new,
a reason to stay -
tell me why I shouldn't go away -
why do I stick around with you?

...and all you say is I DON'T KNOW.
and now it's TIME FOR ME TO GO.
