New to forum
« on: 29 Mar 2013, 10:50 »

Hi everyone.

I've been a fan of QC for a couple years and have lurked the forums for a while, particularly when there's lovely drama in the comic.

I'm sure I'll be slipping in on updates which prompt discussion. Particularly when Mar-bear and Hanners are involved. I love them both oh so much.

Let's see... I'm 29. Run a movie theatre in Michigan. Write for a small little webcomic of my own and own over 30 Nic Cage movies with the goal of someday owning all of them.

Obligatory webcomic plug:

-

Right now Claire is my favorite character, beating our MarMar. Jeph is handling her so damn well and tastefully. I really hope everyone else is enjoying her story as much as I am :)

Welcome from another Michigander/Michiganian/whatever.!There are some others here; I'm a few miles north of the OH-IN border. You'll find a webcomic thread somewhere among Other Fun Things, if you haven't already.

Welcome! Pretty art you have there.

Yeah, and a Michigoose is what happens sometimes to girls in Ann Arbor, especially out at the Arb.

Michigander seems a better name for the ducks that are driven out of town by the Canadian Geese.

I'm originally from Britland, though. Apparently no matter what I live I'll be English. The silly voice won't let me settle anywhere.

I've thought Americans, midwesterners at least, were drawn to Brit accents ever since I heard the voices of British women announcing on some NPR and other radio stations.

I dunno, the adjectives don't quite fit. That makes me think of a southern accent being described by its speaker.

Well, whatever adjectives you use, I've had Americans (specifically) come over to me in an aeroplane just to listen to me talking.

OK, time for the obligatory joke from my Yiddisha Grampa;

Q: What's a meshuggana?

A: a person from Michigan...

It's really more of an auditory pun...

As opposed to a Reading pun. I have one of those in my front yard. It's a bunch of directional signs on a 4x4 post. My mom gave us half the cost of the then-cottage at a time when she lived outside Redding CA. So the signs first pointed to Redding, 1879 miles, Reading PA, 480 miles and Reading MI, 3 1/2 miles. The joke was local. Where I live, it's pronounced REED-ing.

I'm not sure what adjectives I'd use. But they'd be positive ones. The accent was a measurable part of the pleasure of driving 800 miles or so with a bright young British woman of the forum's acquaintance last summer.

Southern accents, Canadian accents, British accents. Pretty much in that order.

So why is it we enjoy hearing our language spoken in a different way? When I think about it, I enjoy most. A quick Google doesn't tell me if there's research about it.

I enjoy the sound of someone educated, regardless of dialect.  A refined southern accent is one thing; Honey Boo-boo's family is quite another.  The same holds for any other accent.

Yes, I'm elitist.  When someone opens their mouth and you can immediately tell that they're undereducated, or perhaps just don't care, it's an intellectual turn off.

This should probably go in "confessions"...

You know... I never thought about it. I wonder if there is a psychological reason that people in America love British accents.
