Ohgosh Marten.

I am not sure whether I want Jeph to drop a monetary deus ex machina on him again (cf: tax return, Hannermom bet). He should work for this.

Anyone care to analyze how this purchase was inspired by Henri's wedding and the situation with Claire?

Geez, everyone's acting like he just took a loan against his testicles. He paid with money he already had. The object of his desire might not have been especially sound, but his method of payment was as sound as possible.

I think we're being negative waves is that the storyline took an abrupt turn from Claire+Marten "shipping"/trolling to him buying something expensive completely out of left field. I understand fully it's Jeph's comic and he has every right to do as he pleases, but for some of us readers, the sudden shift is abit jarring.

Eh, it's just the comic storyline marching on.  Sometimes it takes turns that defy Elucidation space.

I know Marten's feelings though.  Whenever I handle a beautifully crafted sword, I have to resist the urge to break out the credit card (obviously that only happens in very rare cases, but still).

Eh, it's buildup to an entirely new arc. If it were a TV show, I'd be the start of a new season. It doesn't bother me one bit. (though admittedly I am disappointed that we're not seeing me of marten & Claire)

also swords are awesome. Once I have my own place, and, y'know, money, I want one. A REAL one. Either a hand-and-a-half, or a katana. And I'm gonna learn how to use it god dammit.

The sword handling or the credit card out-breaking?

I'm fine with the bayonet and kris (sword, not dagger) in my garage, though both need repairs- the bayonet especially, since my10 year old reaction at finding a short sword was to use it for yard pruning, so now it has a couple notches. I didn't find the kris until I was more mature, and the hilt is loose anyway. I've practiced with the bayonet a bit, and think I prefer short sword handling to the more iconic swords, simply because it doesn't feel so heavy it's hammertime.

I think the volume was mostly surprise… it's not like she continued to rant ad nauseam or anything.

Besides I thought she only approved of good guitar purchases?

Marten certainly came out of left field with the guitar purchase. He may yet start getting serious and reform the band (YAY for character development!).

Besides, it's entirely possible that Jeph is still trolling us.

FLUTES ARE TOTALLY AWESOME until a spring decides it hates you so much that multiple repairs at multiple shops and a last-ditch (unsightly) effort to wrangle it with tape cannot prevent it from popping loose and turning all your Ds into D flats. Nrgh.

I sort of admire people who are able to plunk down way too much money on something they really want - I went back and forth for days about buying myself a ten dollar necklace that I still might return.

Claire would totally play violin. Turns out she's been the fiddle player for a country-western band for several years. When she joins Deathmøle, it will become the first country metal band, launching an entirely new genre that will revolutionize the world of music for a generation.
