A black guy once took an instant dislike to me because I asked him if he was a Blood or a Crip. Keeping in mind this was in Lancashire, England.

Even in Lancashire I might take a dislike to someone who suggested I was a triad gangster simply because I'm of Chinese descent.

The quark suffered a similar fate, being pronounced qu-ah-rk instead of the intended qu-or-rk.
Really? I thought the name was taken from Finnigan's Wake:

"Three quarks for Muster Mark!
Sure he has not got much of a bark
And sure any he has it's all beside the mark."

The rhymes suggest that qu-ar-k was intended, even in an Irish accent!

I say "jif". But English spelling/pronunciation is so inconsistent that it can't make up its mind how to say "gill", depending on whether it is part of a fish, or a unit used to measure the volume of, for example, a fish-tank.

On quark:

Quote from: Gell-Mann, who invented the term
In 1963, when I assigned the name "quark" to the fundamental constituents of the nucleon, I had the sound first, without the spelling, which could have been "kwork". Then, in one of my occasional perusals of Finnegans Wake, by James Joyce, I came across the word "quark" in the phrase "Three quarks for Muster Mark". Since "quark" (meaning, for one thing, the cry of the gull) was clearly intended to rhyme with "Mark", as well as "bark" and other such words, I had to find an excuse to pronounce it as "kwork". But the book represents the dream of a publican named Humphrey Chimpden Earwicker. Words in the text are typically drawn from several sources at once, like the "portmanteau" words in "Through the Looking-Glass". From time to time, phrases occur in the book that are partially determined by calls for drinks at the bar. I argued, therefore, that perhaps one of the multiple sources of the cry "Three quarks for Muster Mark" might be "Three quarts for Mister Mark", in which case the pronunciation "kwork" would not be totally unjustified. In any case, the number three fitted perfectly the way quarks occur in nature.

On gill:  then how about the name which is pronounced one way but can be spelt Gill (short for Gillian, I guess) or Jill...

My hair used to be down past my ass. I sort of miss it. But I must admit that I do not miss HAVING to have my hair in a ponytail. I like how they look on many people, men included, but they can get very annoying.

I too like some buns, but unfortunately, the closest bakery is fifteen minutes by foot. I don't think I have ever lived so far from a bakery in my life. On the other hand, I feel pretty privileged to be that close to a bakery in the first place.

I'd like to see that hair, Neko. If I was capable if growing it and bothered to maintain it, I'd love to have hair that long. My hair just about passes my bra strap at its longest.

Despite their handiness I hate wearing my hair in a ponytail. I must have a sensitive scalp because they're near painful. If I have to wear my hair up I use a butterfly clip to distribute the hair pulling. Also they're pretty.

You can move it out of the way you know... just like a kilt or skirt, at least how I use the head when I'm running around in a kilt, no way I'm taking the belt, sporran and occasionally my sword belt off when I can just lift and shift.

First thing I thought of when I saw the thread title was that stupid Bro.0 show on MTV

Sorry to bring this up from the first page, but every time I see this thread I think of the show. And screw you Patrick and Gareth, that show is hilarious. I always thought it would be terrible, but the people on the show make genuinely funny comments on the videos they show, but soem of the guests are really creepy/dumb.
