How can a band called Boris be heavy? That is a toy bear's name. In order for a band to be heavy the name of the band should be something illegible in a font made from driftwood and tree roots.

Boris just doesn't cut it.

Not sure if its the heaviest, but I revert to Trivium's Ascendancy when I'm in the mood for heavy.

The single greatest heavy song that I return to most often however, is 2nd heartbeat, by (early) Avenged Sevenfold.

Always thought he was to highbrow to be categorised as 'heavy'. I think heavy is more a neanderthal crushing skulls feel.

Lol @turtlspinr clearly we have different interpretations of heavy.   As in a ..meh I was gonna toss in some subatomic particle mass analogy like Tau:Muon:electron or somthing but I've had too much to drink.  clearly you enjoy , or are at least familiar with, far heavier music than I.

ok I wasn't expecting that.

and was listening to some Lindsey Stirling to gently wash away the hangover, and clicked your links.

I should be ok in a day or two.

I was expecting something more like
http://open.spotify.com/album/1OwPZm5J8bxdjJO7ys44QU
or
http://open.spotify.com/track/2iZvFfTL3bJ1yLaZ7zRVw5
but I haven't really followed really heavy stuff since the mid 90's, when Morbid Angel, Death, and Sepultura ruled the world, and I played in a band called Torture.

I guess I got past the "big scary men screaming about satan eating my face"

I like how there's almost an ambient element in the slower stuff, very "soundtrack of my funeral" sounding.

thanks for the education.

Although.. I'm not quite sure of what you mean by "heavy".  Heavy like Zimmer's Hole? Dimmu Borgir? Early Cradle of Filth? The Agonist?

This

Although.. I'm not quite sure of what you mean by "heavy".  Heavy like Zimmer's Hole? Dimmu Borgir? Early Cradle of Filth? The Agonist?

For various reasons, I wouldn't really call any of those bands "heavy" as such. Zimmer's Hole is awesome and fun as heck but not terribly heavy in the traditional sense. A bit too fast for that. Dimmu and Cradle both had some sort of connection to Black Metal way back, a notoriously trebly and un-heavy genre by its definition. Their newer is way too overproduced and keyboard-y to be genuinely heavy in a metallic sense, although both bands have abandoned the BM genre more or less entirely. The Agonist.... Ehm.. Let's just say I don't like that band. I don't like it when bands promote themselves through a female lead singer's novelty factor (I'm looking at you, Arch Enemy) but the dudes behind the female singer serve up piss-weak, boring riffs that just sort of leaves the vocalist standing there, alone, without a proper backing. In The Agonist, the singer does a very decent job, but the rest of the band just don't try hard enough.

As for heaviness, it is enormously difficult to define properly, due to it being so diverse. Personally, I choose to define it as "tune way down and play fucking slow". In my mind, fast bands can't be heavy in the same way bands with a more moderate tempo can. In my mind, the ultimate example of heaviness in Metal – were you to twist my arm and force me to pick one – is still good ol' Bolt Thrower. Listen to the first track off this album and tell me it's not like getting run over by a tank, slowly and meticulously:

Ahh, so more like The Acacia Strain and The Black Dahlia Murder but not so much Strapping Young Lad? Possibly Rose Funeral?
Necrophagist is pretty heavy I would say.. even though they only had a few albums. iwrestledabearonce is pretty fun too :)

That Bolt Thrower song sounds pretty awesome.. sounds like it could of been in Doom 2 or should of been in Brütal Legend

TAS can qualify as heavy, methinks, yes.

But really, a lot of new-school metal lacks that grit that makes for actual heaviness, as opposed to just abrasive-sounding. Some of it is production, but still. No offense, but the bands you're mentioning are what I'd call "gateway" bands, the sort of stuff people listen to when they're sort of dipping their toes into extreme metal. The entry-level stuff can still be good, but personally I don't really get as much out of it as I get from the really nasty stuff. If I want metal, I want it as yucky as possible, and most modern metal is simply too clean and cute.

Yeah, pretty much. This band for instance:

Sludge with a good dashing of Black Metal and Grindcore. Love it. "Hatred For Mankind" has to be the most aptly-titled album in existence. Holy shit, that album sounds like condensed fury.

It's worth considering emotional heaviness here too.  The vast majority of the Jane Doe album by Converge sounds and feels like the dude's life is falling apart in the most chaotic way possible.

MDB's best album is easily their debut (or the previous EP). Those albums ARE heavy.
