Yay! I've spent $1700 on tattoos so far, all black and grey, upper back is full and 2 wrap arounds on either arm (names of family, 1 marine memorial and a bible passage, luke 6 35:38 if you're interested)

Welu! What are are you getting?

Getting the Vault Tec logo from the Fallout games.

(click to show/hide)

It's going to realistically shaded, like it's embedded in the skin and to look a bit like a grown over forgotten vault door. On my upper back, between the shoulder blades. I've wanted this for years and even gone in for consultations on it before but life got in the way from getting it.

You're a nerd, yay!

Just the logo? I like the placement seeing as it's symmetrical and if anyone recognizes it you know you're about to have a lot in common.

Had my first session on my chest piece on Monday. 5 hours for the first session, probably like another 12 hours before we finish it. I don't have any good photos but I'll post some up once I'm done. Also, tattooing your sternum fucking wrecks.

We definitely need to see pictures!

And I handled the tattoos on my arm, upper calves, and thighs pretty easily. The back of the calf and tops of the feet made me wanna murder stuff.

Is it common practice to do online messages or emails to hash out a tattoo idea? I've already messaged asking if they're okay doing that because the place I like is two hours away but just wondering if anyone has ever done this?

I did over email, phone and in person. Each place is different, but if they actually use their email or facebook then it is much easier I think. The worst that will happen if you message them online is they respond by saying you should call them. Or they don't respond, but really that'd lead to you calling them anyway.

Getting my ribs finished tomorrow. I'll post pictures when it's done. Showed my artist a picture of someone's tattoo of The Kid from Bastion and mentioned that it was pretty close to what I wanted, and she got super excited and said she'd work up something for me to take a look at when I come in.

Turns out she got extra super excited and couldn't wait to show me:

Thanks folks! I'm pretty dang excited about her. I'm worried about her healing properly though. I'm a belly sleeper, I have a lot of trouble sleeping if I'm on my back. I've heard you can take a clean towel and put it on your bed in the area of the tattoo, think that'd help?

Should be fine as long as you're wearing a clean shirt or have something clean under you. Even without something it almost certainly won't affect the way your tattoo heals. I have the upper half of my back tattooed and usually sleep on my back. I haven't had any issues with just wearing a shirt to bed for a couple days.

I just kept mine bandaged for about three days, and after, did the whole "it rubs the lotion on its skin" thing after, and haven't had a problem, aside from gaining weight and having it stretch.

Definitely don't keep it bandaged - your skin needs to breathe to heal at its fastest/best. Which is also why anything with petroleum jelly isn't great for healing tattoos. It cuts off oxygen to the area.

If you must sleep on your stomach, keep a clean towel or other cloth under you, and change it every day, until your tattoo is no longer goopy or weeping. And make sure to put a thin layer of lotion on it before you lay down, and when you get up. Cleaning it when you wake up would be good as well.

I shower upon waking up every day when I've got new ink. Otherwise I generally skip a day or two because I have dry skin that really hates lotion but loves its own natural oils (go figure, right?). But with new ink, sanitation is the first priority over having ashy knuckles, knees, and elbows.

In any case, it is healing remarkably quickly. It stopped being gooey after day 2 and until it starts peeling it looks almost perfectly healed. Wild how much faster it is this time compared to last time.

Complication: I'm beginning to think I'm mildly allergic to the red ink in the flames. It's the only part consistently itchy anymore now that the peeling is done, and the only part that feels as if it's somewhat puffy or inflamed. Any insights?

I had the same thing happen!

Good news: If it's the same as what I had, it will eventually calm down and disappear. There will be days where it swells a bit and itches like crazy (usually hot and humid days, or when you're sweating a lot), but it will go away.

Bad news: It took two years before it completely disappeared for me, but it didn't itch all the time in those two years, just on and off. Since it swelled so many times and also because I have no willpower and scratched it a little more than I should have, in places the red ink has turned kind of uneven. Not much though, and it's only noticeable if I point it out.

If I remember correctly though, I think red ink might always heal more slowly? It could be that it's perfectly normal and it's just taking a little longer than the rest, fingers crossed for that.

Oh jeez. Well, if the red ends up looking bad, I'll just have that part covered up, most likely with black to represent space. Fortunately, the flames are hardly the most important detail, and I could see that flowing into something really big and badass someday.

Yeah, my red ink puffed up every once in a while too, for quite some time. After it stopped itching it was actually kind of entertaining for me. Mine looks fine and it's all solid color with no shading or variations, so you should be in pretty good shape. Looks awesome, btw.  :-D

Yeah, I guess I should also mention that the red I have that turned weird are really thin lines, it doesn't take much for something like that to become a little uneven. I have one more solid block of red that is completely unchanged, even though I scratched it as much as the lines. With the amount of red you have, I think it'll be fine.

And yeah, sometimes the red (and the other colours with red in them: orange and brown) would puff up a bit and it would be really weird to touch since it was all risen, it kind of felt like blind text since most of those colours on my tattoo are either dots or lines. I used to say it was a visually impaired-friendly tattoo.

From what I understand a lot of people have a poor reaction to red ink. I don't know what it is but obviously something in the ink may be a pretty common allergen or something. It usually calms down eventually though, like Kris said.
