An 88-string guitar? Wouldn't that be the size of a piano? Or IS it a piano?

I think a harpsichord would be closer to a guitar than a piano; however, I have no idea how many strings a harpsichord would have.

And having an account cracked on your birthday is an especially crappy thing to happen.

I win on obscure cultural references! Lehrer had a monologue about how folk music should be performed on folk instruments, and since his piano didn't qualify as such he asked his audience to pretend he was playing an 88-string gee-tahr.

I think a harpsichord would be closer to a guitar than a piano; however, I have no idea how many strings a harpsichord would have.

5-octaves (sometimes missing a sharp key in the bass), so 60 or 61 strings per stop; small harpsichords have just the one set of strings, but larger ones may have two or three (separately selectable by a stop mechanism), so up to 183 strings.  Exceptionally, in Ireland only (strange but true), some instruments had a range of 5 octaves and a tone, so up to six more strings.  Instruments with four courses of strings exist but are very rare.

Oops, where am I?  Oh yes - Happy Birthday, Jeph!

On the contrary, NL is quite a bit younger than Jeph. Jeph's age when NL joined the forum (nearly nine years ago, wow) is lower than NL's current age, which I'm guessing is rather close to mine (25).

Oh, and happy birthday, Jeph!

So did I. Those interested in hearing Tom Lehrer's performance of "The Folk Song Army", including his intro at the beginning that contains the 88-string guitar line, can check it out here.

Happy day of birth, Jeph!

Oh, yeah, this too.  8-)
