Did you notice that?
« on: 09 Jun 2013, 12:35 »

This thread is for little stuff you notice about QC that you didn't before, or think others might've missed.

I'm doing an archive crawl, and just noticed that Sven is left-handed...

Hanner's punchline here is a Futurama reference. I Searched the forum and couldn't find any mention, and Jeph never brought it up.
http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=961
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0584449/quotes ("...out of a cannon, into the sun.")

Actually, that was the first QC strip I ever saw. I was linked to QC from TVTropes (weren't we all?) and since Jeph didn't say "shoutout to Futurama" or anything, I thought, "bah! He's stealing that joke!" And didn't start reading QC until quite awhile later.

Now that's an eye for detail!

Perhaps. I am a pretty bitchin' writer. What precisely does becoming a contributor entail?

I am pretty sure I came here from xkcd because I was hoping for porn.

Yeah, I was linked here from XKCD as well. Instead of porn, I found a woman and a little anime-themed robot going robot-chassis shopping. Ended up reading the whole thing several times.

I arrived after seeing a few linked strips on Imgur. First comic I've seen was about two women, one of them telling the other that her vulva would be mad at her. I was confused and it took me a while to visit again. Then I read through the whole thing in under a week.

To get back to the topic: IIRC not everyone did recognise the Pratchett/Foul Ole Ron reference of Hanners when she collapsed: "Millennium hand and shrimps…"

I think I was fed up from reading slow-updating Furry comics and just googled "webcomic".

I got here from "Unshelved", about the time that Marten got the job at the library.

I first found QC about the time Raven was first hired at the coffee shop and thought, huh, another story about younguns hanging around a coffee shop, and thought no more of it. Next time I saw QC, and I'm not sure what led me there, Faye was having an anxiety attack about her date with Angus (I remember wondering what she was doing in the hallway in her underwear, not realizing at the time she was sharing an apartment with Marten) and didn't even realize it was the same comic, because of the art evolution. I stayed on through the Dorapocalypse and it wasn't until after that I decided to check out the forum. I think I'm glad it worked out that way.

I found out about TVtropes much later. I could stand to have not found out about it at all.

I see the math/science geeks got here from xkcd (as did I).  I had tried it from the beginning once or twice, and couldn't get into it.  Then one day, I clicked the link and saw a young woman sledding down a hill with an upraised beer, and her friends looking on.

I actually read the comic backwards from there for several hundred strips, watching the plot re-fold, seeing characters I'd gotten to know introduced ("Oh, so that's why...") and watching the art slowly devolve.  I finally went back to the beginning, and met myself halfway while keeping current.

Oh, and the "fired... out of a cannon" joke's a lot older than futurama.  I seem to remember Louie from Taxi (Danny Devito's character) using that line.

And maybe Abbot & Costello.

Heh, that's pretty simple.

Oh, and the "fired... out of a cannon" joke's a lot older than futurama.  I seem to remember Louie from Taxi (Danny Devito's character) using that line.

And maybe Abbot & Costello.

Doesn't mean Jeph didn't get it from Futurama. The wording is almost exactly the same.

And speaking of Futurama...

That's the hazard of popularity -- get enough readers and they'll collectively know every line of every popular work ever produced, and someone will see quotes and references where there are none.

Note that in the first, she has no ponytail.  That hank of hair is long enough to be pulled back into the ponytail, leaving just some short curly's in front of the ear.

He drew her dozens of times before she was introduced - I think he's got her hair down pretty well!

Okay, sorry but I can't agree with neither of you. And I'll try to prove why.

Note that in the first, she has no ponytail.  That hank of hair is long enough to be pulled back into the ponytail, leaving just some short curly's in front of the ear.

Exhibit #1:
These are from #2387, #2388 and #2405, respectively.

As you can see, she has the swiggly tail, despite having her hair pulled in a ponytail. In fact, in the last two, she takes off her hair band, and the swiggly tail persists.

It's also on the other side of her face.

Exhibit #2:
Those are #2459 and #2426.

Claires head is visible from both sides, but the swiggly tail is gone. After #2425, the tail was never to be seen again. And if you look at Exhibit #1, the tail is visible, even when her head is turned to the other side.

He drew her dozens of times before she was introduced - I think he's got her hair down pretty well!

Exhibit #3:
Strip #2203 and a sketch from Jephzibahs Tumblr.

These two images are the first appearances of Claire in qc, the first one is when Tai introduced the interns to Marten, and the second is her first sketch ever, in Jephs blog. She has the swiggly tail in both of them.

I think he's got her hair down pretty well!

I agree! I love Claires hair, especially how poofy and untamed it is, and I always felt the swiggly tail was part of that. I just remember seeing #2425 and thinking "whoah! the tail is gone!", and I wanted to share it here because I deemed it relevant. I'll miss the swiggly tail (not that she looks any worse than before. I love the most recent sketch Jeph made of her!).

Sure, Valdis. I wasn't saying that Claire decided to change something about her, it's just that, before #2425, it's there, after #2425, it isn't. Whether that's because Claire got a haircut, decided to put it into the ponytail or just vaporize it using Pintsizes' laser, that's another thing completely and I can't tell what happened.

My wife does some in-between-visits-to-the-hairdresser trims of her bangs. I'd have to guess Claire just got tired of it, and trimmed it off.

And no, it wouldn't be the first time we've seen hairstyle changes. Right, Faye and Dora?

Heh. Well, he did only say "we shall see." Presumably, he didn't get a flood of emails asking him for the shirt, which is what I assume prompts most of his merch decisions.

I still stick with the simple 'she got a haircut'.
It's not like she'd be the first character to change her hairstyle...

Though QC characters usually note haircuts in-comic.

Say what now? We cast Arnold Schwarzenegger for the part of Claire's hair?  :-o

Arnold Schwarzenegger is so burned!

Dora said Tai could be her rebound after Marten (as a joke) way before the breakup.

That'd only be foreshadowing if Dora and Tai banged. I wouldn't call that foreshadowing of the breakup. Honestly, for me, Dora and Marten looking like fraternal twins was foreshadowing of the breakup :p

You can rebound even if you're the dumper. (Trying to think of a lame basketball joke about offensive rebounding, but it's not working.)

I thought of one! "You can rebound even if you're the dumper, just like offensive rebounding in the sport of basketball."

I don't think that it was necessarily foreshadowing of the breakup, although it is possible that Jeph was already entertaining some ideas about Dora and Tai getting together after the breakup at that point.

Changes in the justification of the text on a t-shirt are perilously close to nit-picking.
Complaining about it is, yes. Noticing it isn't.

You want nitpicking? I'll show you some nitpicking.

In 2428, Emily is wearing a purple top and blue shorts.

2431 appears to happen on the same day - Clinton and Claire are still wearing the same clothes, and Clinton is still with Claire in the library. This begins the whole sequence where Claire and Marten finally talk about what happened after the wedding.

2436 is definitely the same day as 2431, and presumably the same day as 2428, but Emily is now wearing a pink top and turquoise pants. She continues to wear this outfit until 2438.

So - either we have two different days, and Clinton just happened to visit Claire at the library again on a different day when they both happened to be wearing the same clothes as his previous visit, or Emily changed clothes in the middle of the day for some reason.

There. That was nitpicking.  :-P

Of course, Emily changing clothes mid-day is fairly sensible compared to what she normally does.
