Why?  Because people are trying in a friendly way to educate you so that you can avoid causing unwitting upset?  I didn't know Tumblr was that nice.

I don't know if this is the right place to put this, but I've been noticing a lot of Claire/Marten shippers and it confuses me. In 615, Martens line indicates that he would probably mind being with someone who was born male. I don't mind Claire being trans and I know Jeph loves to show how inclusive and tolerant he is, but a relationship between her and marten just doesn't make sense to me. And that doesn't make marten a bigot, that's probably just his preference.

People, including fictional characters EDIT: and the people who create them, often learn things and change their minds as a result of new information and occasionally even regret their previous viewpoints.

No worry Binks.  To put it in a certain light, Claire is a woman.  If I was to entertain what you are saying: Marten never met Claire before that statement.  Whose to say he doesn't feel differently after meeting Claire?  That's why slice of life stories can be so entertaining when done right.  People can grow, change, and experience things just like real people.  Have you ever met a person who makes you question your convictions in a positive way?  Just because Marten said that in a past comic doesn't make it law forever.  He's a person (though fictional) so the real question is, why not?  :-)

(education hat on)
It turns out that trans people often (*) have a profound and permanent sense of being male or female from their earliest memories. Since the organs we are interacting with on the forum are the gray wrinkly ones up top, that's the practically important setting.

(Not just trans people, there was that horrible case of the boy who was consistently raised as a girl after a circumcision accident. He just *knew* he was a boy regardless of the evidence downstairs and how everyone treated him).

The moderators have spent a lot of time educating themselves on the issue and ordering professional papers from the library that aren't online. Scientifically, it looks like the trans people have been right about themselves all along.

I know what you mean by "born male". Saying "male assigned at birth" is not SJW PC tyranny, it's simply more precise thinking. It's a bonus that saying it that way avoids hurting forum members.

GLAAD has some educational resources about transgender people, shorter and better organized than the trans* thread here. http://www.glaad.org/transgender .  I can't vouch for the quality. From trans* people themselves, there's a discussion near the end of "Trans* issues arising from the comic" about whether there's a non-painful way to discuss whether they're physically compatible. There isn't.
(/education)

(moderator hat on)
There's a draft of what will likely become forum rules near the end of the trana* thread in Discuss. Bottom line, we'll enforce it.
(/moderator)

(regular user hat)
Marten has hangups but has been wonderful about treating Claire as a woman in everyday life.

[PM sent explaining things further]

You're welcome. There's a lot to know.

Anyway, it sounds like Claire is not looking for a relationship, and Marten is such a kickass Justafriend that it's great if they stay at that point.

I don't know where else to put this. It pertains to the comic but it's also a random thought: It's pretty crazy and kind of sad seeing that a lot the webcomics that Jeph links to in his old newsposts have discontinued and bring up dead links.

It reminds you of how long the comic has been running, right? Also compared to how long other webcomics run in their entirety.
I started reading QC shortly before the breakup, so about 1800, so seeing the entire comic, I've been following the last less than 30% of it. And yet I've been reading the comic almost every (week) day for three years now!

Once upon a time, it was apparently typed out in one of the former boards that Jeph had attached to the older QC forums, but it was never apparently saved.

i noticed this! Faye's line of "..you don't see fully humanoid robots running around everywhere" struck me as a http://www.questionablecontent.net/comics/1011 bit odd considering Momo's fully humanoid chassis. it makes me wonder if HannerDad sold the patents?

Momo's chassis isn't completely humanoid; it's an anime-themed model from Sony. The Idoru Platinum Deluxe, I think.

Tech marches on, y'know. Even a behind-the-curve guy like me owns a phone he wouldn't have thought possible the previous year. Had the cast met Marigold and Momo 1.0 at that point?

Boyfriend-bot wasn't fully humanoid either. Even now, a chassis like Momo's is two orders of magnitude more expensive than an entry-level one. You don't see cars a hundred times more expensive than a Kia running around everywhere even though they've existed for a long time.

I can believe Hannerdad commercializing the design. The market demand just from AnthroPCs must have been overwhelming.

i don't think they had met Marigold at that point, or Momo. and admittedly i'm using humanoid to mean in appearance, rather than Pintsize's robot-like appearance, Winslow's giant-talking-iPod looks and Momo 1.0's chibi chassis.

i didn't consider the money aspect of it, durr. it was just a bit odd to see that comment from Faye but knowing that those humanoid chassis (or at least, human looking to the point that Momo has to tell Samantha she's a robot) existed and were available in many forms - weren't the store assistants robots too?

You have to wonder what the cost point would be for a Wooden APC. As in, more or less than Pintsize's chassis?

Forgive me if I post repeats, I haven't read through all eight pages of the thread.

It looks like Jeph had an idea of what a new-chasis Momo would look like long before she got it.

ALSO, I dove through the archives for an hour and a half just to find these two, but it seems Dora and Hanners (and I'm gonna go ahead and assume Jeph), are Terry Pratchett fans!  :-D

Well that chassis is just an oversized version of her former chassis, no?

Couldn't you say that about her present chassis, too?

I think RedMaiden has a point -- there is some similarity between Momo's daydream of what she might look like in a new chassis and what she actually looks like in it. Of course, it makes sense that Momo would choose a chassis that was similar to the one she'd been day-dreaming about. (The real one looks a little less sexy than the fantasy one, though.)

And I didn't know the Millenium Hand thing was from Discworld, although I believe there was some forum discussion about the phrase in the past. So thanks!

I think it is 4 or 5 middle names.

A name, two middle names and all of them hyphenated? As in "Laura-Joanna Eli-Nora Alexandra-Camilla".

Just because we don't know how to pronounce it doesn't make it unpronounceable. If we heard someone say it enough times we could pronounce it, could we not?

There are two mirrors?

These options were all discussed in the forum at the time.

(The Millennium Hand line from Hannelore is a catchphrase of a character in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series)

Also of Mrs Tachyon form the Johnny series.

Is it canon that Mrs Tachyon is a time traveller, btw?

EDIT: I want to thank the moderators for apparently handling well what seems to have been some transphobic comments here. There seems to have been some trolling the last year or two, from what I've seen, but also very good discussion. I got some useful links from some members of this community, for which I thank them.

While binging I once again stumbled over the "Fehlerbrauerei Kugelschweiss" , and it took me a while what it was supposed to mean. Fehlerbrauerei is pretty obvious. It means "Mistake-Brewery". The Kugelschweiss isn't that obvious. Instinctively I'd translate Kugel as "sphere". And I kinda overlooked the meaning of Schweiss, because it's actually written Schweiß. It reminded me more of the verb "schweissen"/"schweißen", which means welding. But after a while I realised that it probably meant "Schweiß", and thus "sweat". From there it was rather obvious that Kugel wasn't supposed to mean "sphere", but rather "ball".

So the beer is called ballsweat. By the way, the, very vulgar, correct translation would probably have been "Sackschweiß".

Also note that in the newspost underneath Jeph mentions his favourite Fehlerbrauerei is Schadenbrau, which translates roughly to "damaging brew" or "harmful brew". Or something like that. Iunno, my German isn't as good as it used to be.

In tkat case it should probably be spelled Schadenbräu. But anyway, it doesn't make too much sense. I just assumed he was referencing Schadenfreude
