After my previous post - it's the last one on the previous page, so I think almost nobody actually saw it :-( - sprouted this interesting coffee discussion, here's something else I noticed (I'm currently rereading the comic from the beginning, this is why I stumble upon these things):
Steve and Marten talk about "speed beer" being their college sport:
http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1386
Also, a few comics before that, Marten talks about college and winter and snow:
http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1336
And here I was always thinking that Marten went to college in California and then only moved to Massachussets afterwards to be with Vicky, where he also met Steve! I just looked it up: California apparently has snow in the mountains, but probably not that much in the cities near the coast, right? So, where did Marten go to college? Is there a college town with lots of snow in California? Also, we still know Marten and Steve did not go to college together, so "speed beer" can't really have been their common hobby in college.
Possible solution: When Steve says "our school sport", the "our" might not mean Marten and him, but just his college.
So anyway, now I can't decide whether this is an inconsistency in the story or not.

I went to college at UC Santa Barbara in the '70s, and in winter there was frequently snow in the Santa Ynez Mountains, a short drive to the north.

I think pretty much all universities' school sport is drinking in one form or another! Maybe Steve told Marten about it and he brought it into his friendship group.

It was Steve's college drinking sport. If he's from the Pioneer Valley area, it's likely he did it at some point and time during college. Heck, it was a thing we did here in Wisconsin (in the "more inhabited" part of the state), so I'm thinking it would be done out west as well.

The common belief is that Marten is from the Bay Area, so he could have gone to any number of schools out there. And I'd suspect any one of them could have experienced snow at some point, because despite the Pacific's warming trend on the west coast, it does snow in California (as pointed out previously).

Music Theory would be something I'd see at UC-Berkley, myself.

It does snow here, but really only in the mountains. It hasn't snowed in San Francisco or Berkeley for decades, for instance, so I wouldn't expect any of the colleges in or around those towns to have gotten any snow recently. What snow they got when it did snow wasn't nearly enough for sledding, either.

And yes, Music Theory does sound like something Berkeley would have in their curriculum, but I'm sure lots of other colleges/universities have it too.

I was doing an archive binge when I noticed: Claire's dad works on the space station.

Second panel, far right. OK, so he doesn't look all that much like Claire, but he does have the same hair.

He looks too young to be Claire's father -- unless people age more slowly in space or Hannelore's dad is trying some new anti-aging method on him that actually works. Maybe he's a third sibling -- Claire's older brother?

Older brother maybe? Would explain why Clinton's so into hannerdad's research and/or how he got a prototype hand….

Also, does anyone else think that the short woman with the long orange hair (same comic, third panel, bottom right) might be an anthro-PC?

Clinton's fanboyism at getting a glimpse of a family member suggests he's not well acquainted with the family.

Hm, I dunno - I think someone who is closely related to a fan as hardcore as Clinton would be likely to know the full name of his heroes, and Hannelore isn't exactly a common name. In fact she's quite possibly the only one Claire has ever heard of, so the surname would naturally spring to mind.

But Clinton didn't know Hannelore's name beforehand, either. He only realized from her "Ellicot-Chatham" surname (not a common name either) that she must be related to his hero.

Which does make it seem odd that Claire guessed Hanner's last name just from hearing her first name. My guess is that it doesn't mean anything more significant than a mistake by Jeph...

I'd just guess that, fanboy who he is, Clinton told Claire about having met Hannelore, his great idol's daughter, mentioning her by her full name. Seems the most plausible explanation to me.

This one is kind of weird. Nobody would have noticed this but me, because it involves a picture I took of my son last summer.

This is what I use for my Facebook cover photo:

Now, compare to the second and third frames of 2109.

I was browsing the archives this morning, and suddenly said "Hey! That background looks familiar!" I didn't deliberately duplicate the comic; it was just too good a shot to pass up when I saw it.

Did you notice that Jeph seems to have stopped giving texture to the characters' hair this week?
Compare e.g. Faye's hair in
http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2644
and
http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=2649
But it's consistent with all the characters in the comics in between!
Do you think it's just because Jeph didn't have as much time this week or might this be a permanent change in the art?

 He doesn't:
 - Give texture to the characters' hair.
 - Put the copyright in the bottom.
 - Use the same font/size in the title,
when he draw the comics on his new table. I think he doesn't have the fonts and brushes there yet.

He bought it around 2625, and start drawing there from 2626 to 2632.

When Marigold meets Dale outside the convenience store, she is holding a cup with  UHA.. ABUK.. on it. What could that be? http://www.questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=1771

I started this discussion a few months ago, but I only just noticed that in comic no. 866 Dora is wearing an "I has a bucket" t-shirt.

Also I had a look on urban dictionary, and the entry is so disgusting that Dora could not possibly have meant it.

I suspect that the new tablet is the reason why there's no texture to his characters' hair. It might be jarring when we next see Claire.

I always thought those comics drawn with the tablet are those with the larger font. The font first became bigger when Jeph drew the first comics with the tablet, but lots of those comics (e.g. those with Claire) still have hair texture. However the ones with the Steve talk don't have it. So I guess you're probably right that it's due to drawing with the tablet.

I remember that being the original line when the strip came out, I don't think it was changed.

What I just noticed is that Marten's shirt changes color from strip 2101 to strip 2102. At first I thought it was the next day or something but Faye is still wearing the same thing and they are talking about the same subject.

It was changed, from "es ist mir so peinlich" to "das is mir so peinlich".  Unless there was something before even that ...

(My German is plenty rusty, but I did not think the original wrong.  Slightly awkward at most.)

I don't know if it's been discussed before, but has anyone noticed that Veronica Vance seems to be based loosely on Bettie Page?

Points of similarity that I can think of off-hand:
  • Both are primarily known for their bondage/dominatrix photos
  • Neither one has ever done full nudity or hardcore porn
  • Both have black hair and blue eyes, a color combination that has been remarked as "very unusual" more than once in QC
Any other similarities?

Well we don't really know this for a fact.

We have Veronica's word for it - doesn't that count?

And Bettie Page is pretty well known for not having done full nudity or explicit sex. I believe there is one extant picture of her fully nude, out of the (tens of?) thousands of photographs taken during her career. And that one may have been faked.

Yeah, I didn't remember that when I first posted. Just noticed it when I looked up the strip in which VV said she never did full nudity. It wasn't a very detailed comparison, though, and I don't think anyone's discussed it in-strip since then.

In 1829, Veronica apparently recognized the Goatse bloke.

Somebody made an effort to track him down.... and found some evidence (moles) that it was indeed a man called Kirk in the picture. See: Finding Goatse: The Mystery Man Behind the Most Disturbing Internet Meme in History (SFW).

Haha, I never noticed that Faye takes a sip of the customer's coffee before giving it to him in this strip. Jeph managed to do the look on his face very nicely!
This shows that I often just read the speech bubbles and look at the characters' faces and don't really pay attention to what else is going on.
Just a small thing, but maybe you also find it funny!

She was making sure it was only decent (if it was good, she'd have chugged it out of spite).
