Yup! Sadly they often require an NUS card (National Union of Students) which I don't have and which costs £20 a year, I think. Not worth it, and I'm not mad about the NUS anyway. Some places do just accept uni IDs though. I still have my Cambridge one and no qualms at all about using it until I get my Birmingham one instead!

Hi there! I'm Gareth, the NUS representative for *deleted*. The NUS card actually only costs £12, and lasts for a year. If you actually use it for all the things that you can use it for (Spotify premium, Top Shop, Amazon, Dominoes, Odeon, coach rides, a discount on a railcard) you save shitloads of money. For my personal lifestyle I would save something like £750 a year.

Sorry to reply late, but uh... NUS cards actually are pretty awesome.

The NUS, on the other hand...

Oh hey, are we talking student discounts on online shops or what? In that case with ASOS (and H&M, Urban Outfitters if you're into that, and a lot of other stores) all you have to do is sign up with https://www.myunidays.com/, which is completely free.

And yeah, I think I'll get that dress, pretty sure I can pull it off. If it feels awkward they do free returns, so I've got nothing to lose! I know what you mean by the whole 'flatter your body type' bullshit, it's pretty lame that we're apparently supposed to create an optical illusion in order to look good, but I do think different bodies suit different things.

I agree- go for it! I could see that looking really cute with leggings and boots. Every time I look at it, I think of corduroy. I have no idea why. Maybe even throw a corduroy blazer over top because that would be Spiffy.

The stripes kind of makes it look like corduroy! And yeah I just got new boots today, they're so great and would look really cute with that dress! All of my dresses besides one are very summery, so it will be nice to have another dress that looks good with autumn and winter clothes.

The thing is, I don't use Spotify, I won't be shopping for clothes again, Dominoes doesn't sell anything I can eat, I don't go to the cinema, I get a free rail card with my bank account and as a result coaches are very rarely a better option. I absolutely agree they're worth it for some people, but I can't see myself making £12 of savings using one. The only thing I would maybe use it for would be Amazon, and I don't anticipate spending much money there now that I've got regular and easy access to a very large library of fiction and no more space to store anything I buy.

What I don't see is why anyone would spend £12 on a NUS card at all when you get the exact same thing from unidays for free.

Well the £12 isn't just for the card, it's for membership of the union. But as I'm a student member of the Midwifery union, I don't think I need that particularly. Plus some shops will only accept the NUS card (not many though).

Ah right. I'd never even heard of NUS before this thread, and I get student discounts pretty much thrown after me no matter where I go, online or in actual stores. My student card/matriculation number seems to be enough for everything I need.

The dress arrived already! That was crazy quick. Anyway, what's the verdict? Sorry about the photo quality, my camera is terrible in low light and the image stabiliser is laughable. ...and my mirror is dusty, shut up.

Yay, thanks! I have a few similar tops in various colours, and I wear tights all the time, so it'll work with a lot of my clothes then. I hate it when I buy something I like without realising it only works with few of my things, but I've gotten much better at not doing that the past couple years. This dress is definitely a keeper.

I'm bad at doing that with shoes, especially chunky boots because they are my weakness. Then I just wear them anyway because I like being tall.

See I kind of think chunky boots work well with most things, they look great with jeans, skirts and dresses. The only thing I can think of that they don't look good with might be harem trousers or sweatpants, but the fault there is not with the boots...

There's this weird trend I've noticed lately where women wear short shorts and sandals paired with a winter jacket, and it just looks so weird to me. Like the lower part of the body still thinks it's summer? Or maybe they don't have any clothes for autumn, so they're mixing random summer and winter items.

Kris you also have really slender legs so chunky boots will only make them look more slender. I think. I don't into fashion.

I need another hoodie, I have one that is good for autumn but when it gets dirty working in the shop then the only other one I have is great in the morning but far too warm by the time my classes end.

 +1  Looks cute, though. Quite countryside-ish.

Yay! New jeans that fit alright compared to most of my old ones! Boo, hobo guy-jeans from ages ago!

Noticed after taking the pictures that they weren't quite pulled up properly at the time, though, so ignore the scrunched up bit. :-)

On a different note.. what do these do, exactly? If you want to tie them in the back to adjust the neckline or something?

Those are to keep the shirt on a hanger if you hang it up. Either loop them over the hook or the hanger might have little slits they can sit in. A lot of people I know just cut them off and keep the clothes folded in a drawer, but then the remainder can poke into you.

Those jeans are great, rock that booty! Also I always just cut those things inside shirts off, since I never hang them anyway and even if I do, they stay on the hanger fine without them. It's more annoying when they pop out when you're wearing them.

Kris you also have really slender legs so chunky boots will only make them look more slender. I think.

Kind of true, but it depends on the boots. The boots I consider 'chunky' for myself are usually just regular boots, because if I wear actual chunky boots I kind of look like a stick figure wearing clown shoes. People with more shape and meat to their legs can pull off actual chunky boots much better than me, which I'm kind of jealous of, but oh well. I love my new boots so it's all good.

I always cut those ribbon things off, things stay on the hanger fine without them and they always stick out of the top when I wear them.

Depends on the size of the neck opening.  Several of my wife's dresses and blouses need them, because the neck opening is large enough that it slips off the hangar.

In that case I think I'd rather just get those hangers with rubbery bits at the end, so that fabric doesn't slide off it at all. Those strings are just so annoying.

While you may or may not need the strings at home, depending on your hanger/drawer situation, chances are the store that sells them needs them if there is any hope o keeping the racks in order.

Almost all my hangers are of the velvet-covered variety now. They hold almost everything I need to hang up very well. And yeah as a previous retail employee I can tell you that hanging wide-neck tops or anything in a slippery material is really fucking annoying. And made much less annoying with those little tab ribbon thingies.

Oh sure, but once you've bought the clothes, cut those things off because they are stupid. Or I guess you could weave them into a necklace and make it a fashion statement.

Ditto. LOVE THEM.

The little ribbons were worth their weight in gold while I was working retail but at home they get hacked right off.

Those boots are ridiculous.....in more ways than one.  :-P

Ignoring the price, I'm not a fan of the square sole with the round toe shape.

Found a site with some cool superhero based leggings and stuff but they're a bit too expensive for me.

Those are so cute! I have a similar pair but with thin laces. The laces in yours look really pretty.

Edit: I'm looking up pretty shoes now and this is something that's bugged me since they became a thing. What's the appeal of wedge style shoes?

Little cheese you should totally get them!

I actually don't like these laces, though it could have something to do with the fact that they're all crumpled from being in the box. I'm also not liking the lacing pattern but I'm not sure I can do much with so few eyelets available.

Also, for anyone that wants to do fancy lacing, I love this site: http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/

I used to have a pair almost like that! I loved them to bits, but they were suede and got ruined way too quickly, Norway and suede isn't a great match. Those look much better than mine did anyway.

Most people learn how to tie their shoelaces around the age of five.

Fashion confession: I didn't learn how to tie my laces till I was about eleven or twelve because I just always had slip on or velcro shoes. It wasn't till that age I got "proper" shoes for fancy grammar schoo. Even then, I'd try to get velcro or slide on on buckle shoes, any to avoid laces and also because of preferring the look. People make fun of me for being terrible at tying my laces all the time and it just makes me hate laces even more because I'm so fumbly with them. Makes it a pain when I see pretty ones but am too scared to get them.

Payless is a relatively cheap source of shoes... I should get a good couple years out of them, especially since I won't wear them every day, but they are by no means high quality. I love them all the same :D

Also I decided to straight lace them and they look good. I might get laces made of actual lace (like these http://store.rebeccas.com/store/images/large/YAP9001.jpg) but for now these work!

re: laces: apparently I never learned the common way to tie laces - the "bunny ears" method. The way that I do it looks better, but takes a little longer, and looks like I'm fumbling, even though I'm not. So I have some idea of how annoying that is.

Hey, people can say what they want about Payless- but some of my favorite shoes are from there :-)

Neko, if you want to have some fun with your laces, I'd recommend popping into Michael's or AC Moore and poking around in the ribbon section. They're obviously not meant to hold up the way real laces do, but you can have fun with switching up the ribbon- and they're actually cheap enough to do so. I laced up the back of my wedding shoes with some satin ribbon and it was awesome. I've got to post a picture of those babies.

Edit: found them! After searching for what felt like an eternity, I bought these in silver. On sale, naturally.  :-D

I wish I could have had prettier wedding shoes...but I was walking on grass, anything over an inch would have made my dress look too short, and then I would have most likely been taller than my husband in all of the photos. I wanted these (original webpage doesn't exist anymore), but ended up with these in silver.

neko, I love oxford/derby-like booties! They're super adorable!

I do love mermaid style dresses, though I could never wear one.

A lady doesn't walk, she is wheeled about on a dolly by a servant.

I wanted a mermaid wedding dress SO BAD. They really are obnoxious to walk in. A dress with a dropped waist does the same awesome butt-enhancing thing that mermaid dresses do with the added bonus of mobility!

Exactly! Which is why I went with that style, too!
