Dora's missing a business opportunity here: Coffee of Doom Delivery. Dale delivers to your office coffee, pastries, and a cassette tape of Faye sassing you. Don't have a working cassette player? That's your problem.

Coffee and pastry delivery, sure. What are these cassette tapes of which you speak? (Kidding. I owned vinyl records before it was remarkable to do so.) However, it's past time to hire Marigold to update CoD's website to include a new -- Vine? (See how hip I am not?) -- of Faye's Sass of the Day, perhaps an insulting recitation of the Specials.

OK, Penelope and Cossette. Scene's over. Back in the counter cabinet.

I thought Raven was in college studying physics and that's why she doesn't work at CoD anymore. I know Jeph brought her back for a summer job, but college could have started again by now.
Characters are still wearing short sleeves.  I'd put money down that it's still the same summer, so Raven should be around somewhere.

Hopefully we get to see more of Penelope again some time, I really like her. I have the feeling that characters become sort of boring to write when in a happy relationship, so they appear less (Penelope+Wil, Steve+Cosette). I guess I can understand that a little, but I still miss Penelope. And Wil was fun, too.
Agreed.  Despite her lack of screen time, Penelope is actually my favorite character.

I suspect it will be a long time until we see any of the Secret Bakery folks again, other than maybe Sam.  Then again Amir reappeared after a long absence, so you never know.  It's probably time we see Wil and Sven again.

I admit I have no idea when college starts again in the US after the summer break. When university in Germany starts again, it's sometimes still warm enough to wear short sleeves (beginning of October), though not for very long.
If not to college, then maybe Raven went on a trip again. Canada? I suppose Jeph himself does not always invent excuses for characters in his head. It's probably mostly not a conscious decision when a character goes off-screen for a while. Must be hard to get everyone in with so large a cast. But I bet Sven, Wil and Raven will reappear sooner or later.

  • The distilled essence of Mr. James Beam himself.

Most colleges and schools in the US start late August / early September (some wait until after the Labor Day holiday, which is the first Monday in September).  They run 14/15/maybe 16 week semesters (with some time off in November for our Thanksgiving, and maybe some in October for a mid-semester break) ending in December for the Christmas/New Year's holiday.  Then it's back sometime in January for another semester, running until early / mid May.

Then there are the summer sessions, "May-mesters" (seriously, a whole course in under 5 weeks?) and other oddball sessions.  Also, some schools run on a "tri-mester" or quarter system, each session running 10 or 11 weeks with a two or three week break between each one.  The summer quarter is usually optional, and the winter one has a break in the middle for the holidays during which everything is forgotten.

So yeah, short sleeves in late hot-as-hell August when everyone's back-to-school would not be unusual.

I had a post composed suggesting something along these lines, but then I got nervous that that might be hitting too close. Dora's got the best coffee we know about in *hampton, so growing her wholesale business would be fun to watch.

Thinking of Raven, I seem to recall that she went to study physics as a grad student and not an undergrad. Generally physics departments pay stipends to their grad students so they don't have to find work during the summer and can stay and do research (or teach so that the professors can take a break during the summer).

The thing is, he isn't a compelling character yet.  He's that guy who delivers pizza, is a good enough CoD customer to get secret menu privileges, and may or may not act in a creepy manner toward Marigold.  And he takes video games way too seriously.

Have I missed anything, or is that pretty much the sum total of what we know about Dale?
How much more do we know about Marigold Farmer? She's a computer geek instead of pizza deliveryperson. She's a gold farmer after all. She has poor hygiene. She takes video games even more seriously than Dale. She's been in orbit around the Earth.

She likes Yaoi and likes Angus (though not to the degree that she did before, y'know, DRAMA), she has a AnthroPC that she cared about enough to get a human sized body at a price likely equivalent to a cheap car or more, she does web development, at least some of which is for her dad, she got face time (ifyouknowwhatImean) with a rocket scientist and lab time with a laser scientist, likes spathe ham, went to college with Angus, had a less than existent social life before adoption by the Marten and Faye Society for Wayward Youths, doesn't like beer, she has boobs that are literally bra popping, she has bad but slowly getting better self esteem, she can be bluntly rude and hypocritical, she and Sven banged each other on a sidewalk etc, etc (I added those before writing two more lines)... we know quite a bit.

Dale has had two jokes going so far; rivalry with Marigold and pizza delivery. Both had good runs and were amusing treatments of a character, but now Jeph is transferring him from joke character (like the Bros) to cast.

I think the reason Penelope and Cosette aren't appearing much these days is that Jeph is not interested in writing them at the moment. I do like his occasional throwbacks to forgotten characters, though, as they're usually well-timed and in good taste.

Penelope is a bit of a Plain Jane, bordering obnoxious at times, so I don't mind that she's not as common a face these days. It's Cosette that I want to see more of.

Natasha is no more! All that remains now is the Spider Queen, tragic victim of a radioactive mutant spider robot byte that mutated her into a gestalt cyborg made of millions of tiny spiders. This wouldn't have made much difference overall, if it wasn't for her recent and sudden banishment from her new home under Coffee of Doom, which tipped her over the (very narrow) edge she was on, leading her to swear eternal vengeance on all barista-kind…

He has additional jobs bussing tables and walking dogs. He's sufficiently good at the social aspects of WoW to be a leader of some kind though he definitely bit off more than he could chew going after MarBear and afterward was suitably impressed.

Creepy though he may be, there's a fumbling human side to him as well. And, even though Marigold fired the first shot, he's got enough grace and social awareness to want to set things right after she bested him, and he knew Marigold's favorite pizza was the way to do so.

Now he's in the CoD looking for a new gig, no longer satisfied to be permeated by pizza, showing he's got enough drive in him to want to change his situation for the better. I find that all compelling, and I'm impressed that Jeph was able to show all that in only about a dozen appearances.

As long as his glasses are still shining, he's still a joke character.

I really hate to keep harping on that point, because I've literally never had an issue with Jeph's drawing before, but I lose my Willing Suspension of Disbelief every time I see Dale's face.

You don't need much Suspension of Disbelief for a four-panel webcomic, especially one with breeding Roombas and Holoponies...so the fact that I could lose it at all was somewhat surprising to me.

So I'm afraid I can't take Dale seriously as a character until the glare goes away. Perhaps I'll be a minority of one...but somebody has to shake their fist at that cloud.

It seems to me that when it comes to resumes, less is more so long as you don't leave time gaps and make clear the times you were working 3 jobs. But you don't have to mention the week you spent manning the booth at a fair, unless you're submitting a resume for a job booth running again. People who include absolutely everything like Dale just end up distracting the hiring manager, and distraction equals dismissal.

bring back Padma!
No, Padma served her purpose as far as Marten and the plot go. There's no reason for her to come back.

...but now Jeph is transferring him from joke character (like the Bros) to cast.

Well, he's still in the process of transfer. Until we get an explanation, I'm going to assume he's either blind and has a Geordi La Forge thing going on, or they're something similar to Google Glass.

What I wanna know is how he works those multiple jobs, and has any sort of leader position in any MMO. Online games are something that it's hard to run a guild, or even a small team, unless you have a sufficient amount of time to. And unless he has the horrible luck of working 3-4 hour shifts for every job he's been hired for (which can happen), or he isn't sleeping, there's something suspicious about it.

It wouldn't be necessary for him to be a leader of any kind for that scene. He could just be playing with some friends, maybe with other members of his guild. I don't think you need to be a guild leader or something like that for asking a favour of others.

I'm going with the Google Glass idea with his glasses. It's obvious they have the tech. He may have gotten them after that first appearance, and it helps with his Pizza Delivery job, because he can get directions and new pickups for delivery in an instant.

I agree that this perpetual glare is really weird. I liked Dale in his first appearences, before the glare began (those with the talk about the secret menu). The glare was fitting for some of the WoW gags after that, but in this arc, normal eyes would have been much better, in my opinion. Never seeing someones eyes makes me somehow sympathize less with them. Somehow Dale without real eyes seems much less human to me (in the sense of having a personality. In that sense, Momo is much more human than Dale).

I'm still a bit disappointed that the only two things that spring to mind for most people when they hear "Beethoven" are the Ode to Joy and the beginning of the fifth symphony. Beethoven made so much great music! I'll admit, I'm a Beethoven fan, especially the sixth symphony and the "Coriolan" are amongst my favourite pieces of music at all.
