Acronym FAIL
« on: 29 Jun 2013, 22:56 »

This is a thread for acronyms that really, really should have been caught before they got into the wild.

South Carolina tried to preempt federal gun control laws by declaring all its armed citizens to be members of the South Carolina Unorganized Militia.

The National Indian Gaming Association is a thing that exists and when they stay at hotels thry get custom key cards with the acronym on it. The acronym also was in use as an identifier in the system.

I'm always reminded of the GDR (it was gone before I was born, but we learn much about it in school). They had ridiculously long titles, which were still ridiculously long when shortened. Example: Erich Honecker was "Generalsekretär des Zentralkomitees der Sozialistischen Einheitspartei Deutschlands der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik", short "Generalsekräter des ZK der SED der DDR".

Reminds me of a german joke. These guys have an "AküFi". "Abkürzungsfimmel", which roughly translates to "obsessed with acronyms"…

Then there are acronyms that are quickly tossed aside because of the embarrassing nature of them.

The United States Fleet was an organization in the United States Navy from 1922 until after World War II. The acronym CINCUS, pronounced "sink us", was used for Commander-in-Chief, United States Fleet. This title was disposed of and officially replaced by COMINCH in December 1941 (for "Commander-in-Chief", U.S. Navy).

One can understand the rush to drop that acronym after December 7th.

There was a line in a show my wife did years ago, something about "I like Vic Damone, but I'm not going to get his initials tatooed on my back."

Another character responded, "Good thing."

Pff. Germans have nothing on Soviet Russians. They used to take part of one word, parts(s) of other word(s) and glue them together.
A comparatively mild example is Politbureau, whereas more severe cases include kolhoz which is short for kollektivnoye hozaystvo (collective economy) or komsomol which is short for kommunisticheskiy soyuz molodezhi (communist union of the youth).

The most severe case listed on Wikipedia is "Росглавстанкоинструментснабсбыт" (transliterated and hyphenated: Ros-glav-stanko-instrument-snab-sbyt. Pronunciation here), which is the short, informal name for an institution formally called the "Главное управление по снабжению и сбыту станков, кузнечно-прессового оборудования, инструмента и абразивных изделий при Совете народного хозяйства РСФСР" - "Main Administration for Deployment and Distribution of Machines, Forging Equipment, Instruments and Abrasive Products at the Council of the National Economy of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialistic Republic".

Incidentally, it appears Lenin hated this kind of words, considering them to be bastardizing the beautiful Russian language. I cannot help but agree with him.

My father had to deal with them in the 70's.  He was overseeing the installation of American-made abrasive equipment for the cleaning of forged engine blocks at the world's largest truck factory near Kazan.  He was there for about four months.

...and it was converted to the world's largest tank factory in the 80's.

Xerox has a process in place for as long as I've worked there where you need to schedule all of your vacations, holidays, and personal time off for the entire year at the end of December, so they can schedule coverage while you're out. They call this process the Full Attendance Process.

That's not the worst part.

They "strongly advise" that you retain the electronic submissions for the current and at least 5 previous FAPs on your work computer in case of conflicts.

Yes, I have a corporate mandated FAP folder.

Well, we Germans apparently love to put words together to make new ones, so long words aren't uncommon in German. Many words in German consist of smaller words. But to show that we mean a specific thing and not a combination of others we don't put spaces in there.

Flugzeugabwehrkanone, well, it consists of "Flugzeug", "Abwehr" and "Kanone". Translated it would mean something along the lines of "Airplane defense cannon". So basically we just leave away the spaces. The word "Flugzeug" itself consists of two smaller parts: "Flug" and "Zeug". "Zeug" nowadays is used similarly to "stuff", but it used to mean "something" or even "machine". "Flug" means "flight". So a "Flugzeug" is basically a "flying machine". So a Flak is a "cannon for the defense against flying machines".

That's how all the "Werfer"-jokes wzrk by the way. Many of them are grammatically wrong, but the words still do make a bit of sense. Stuff like "This is a Nebelwerfer, it werfs Nebel" takes apart the word "Nebelwerfer" into the parts "Nebel"/"fog" and "Werfer"/"thrower". Same goes for Flammenwerfer and such.

I'd actually translate Abwehr to repellant, mainly because that lets you translate it to a flyingmachinerepellingcannon.

A neighbour of mine used to be a mobile repairman for an elevator company. His van was clearly labelled to show he was a member of the Fast Action Response Team.

Funny - many years ago, I was working on developing a web tool for the facilities department of a major corporation that would allow the company's employees to request facilities actions (repairs, equipment moves, etc.) via the company intranet. The requirements for the tool were pretty straightforward. What wasn't straightforward was getting the customer to settle on a name for the tool - the project committee in charge of that was hopelessly divided into three camps endorsing three different names for it. Finally, a week before rollout, I told them that if they didn't come up with a name I was going to unilaterally name it "Facilities Action Request Tool". Much to my horror, the committee actually approved that name.

I won't even get into the fact that the same company had a security system called NAD.

Oh man, reading people's handheld maternity notes is like reading this thread. I'm doing the bloody degree and I rarely understand more than half. And these notes are supposed to be a communication tool between the midwives, the doctors and the pregnant woman! I am hoping to continue with my refusal to buy into the cryptic midwifery code which inevitably shuts women out of their own care (and also the acronyms are not always standardised so there's a risk of error).
