Internet Archive Wayback Machine
« on: 12 Sep 2013, 14:30 »

The Internet Archive Wayback Machine is an attempt to archive the Internet that started in 1996.  I've used it several times recently to recover pages and articles that had been thought lost.  Thanks to its magic you can read an article that I wrote in 1997, and see the entry page I designed for my then company's FTP archive (that page even links to my personal home page at that date)!  Big stuff like images and attachments (and the java applet on my home page) tend to be missing, though.

This has been a public service announcement for those who are unaware of this remarkable resource.

I've used that site a few times to find sites and information that was no longer available,  It's a good place to hunt them down.

I needed to access information from the USDA website during the government shutdown. Instead of changing the topic of my assignment or using a less reliable source, I used the Wayback Machine to get the info I needed.

It's also just fun to look at old websites, see a site's evolution, that sort of thing.

Yes, it's very useful. It is a bit of a toss-up whether what you want will have been picked up, but it is much better than nothing.
