Social stigmata is still a real thing, even if it is easing up. The people around here seem pretty open and accepting though. Which shouldn't be much of a surprise given how the comic characters are like. I've always found Dora to be a refreshing and honest take on a bisexual character. Anybody who goes so far as to like the comic enough to join the forums is probably pretty open minded, mostly.

Being trans can muddy the sexual orientation waters even further though. Depending on family and social background even more so. Because of my very conservative and gay-hating father and being bullied through high school I denied for the longest time that I was attracted to men and only dated women. It wasn't until I came out to myself as transsexual that I could admit, even to myself, that I liked both men and women. And anyone in between. (Especially those in between. mmmm androgyny.)

Claire could be easily still working out her own sexual orientation. She's only been in transition a few years at most by her own admission. Or she could know exactly what she likes. We don't have enough information to say yet.

Or she could know exactly what she likes.

I think the involuntary blushing over Steve at the pool party indicates that, whether we know or not, she certainly does know what she likes...

At least, some part of her does!

I'd just like to add that recognizing that someone is good-looking isn't the same as being sexually attracted to them. I'm pretty much 100% hetero, but I can acknowlege that a man is good-looking - usually in the context of "Damn, I wish I looked more like that guy." (This thought is often directed towards Liam Neeson and Harrison Ford.)

That's definitely true, I have friends who talk about finding women attractive but not being attracted to them (and I experience this even though I am attracted to both genders: I can acknowledge attractiveness without being affected by it). Basically sexuality is complicated! But I do think that Claire is definitely attracted to Steve, not just acknowledging he's attractive.

It's actually quite nice that people are talking about bisexuality as a thing that really exists, since most of the general media present it as binary: attracted to men, or attracted to women.
To be fair, that's because most of society IS binary, both outwardly and in actual fact. Males especially are very unlikely to be bisexual. Lots of people still are having a hard time or have yet to accept interest in the same sex alone- being interested in both is going to take a bit more time to represent. I don't really see that as an issue so long as what bisexual characters there are aren't caricatures- it would get very annoying if media became obsessed with matching exact ratios of human society to characters.

I would personally disagree with the assessment that most people are monosexual. I think that society has to well programmed us into thinking that. We've been taught that there are boxes of sexuality, rather than a sliding curve. You are straight or gay... sometimes people add bi in there too. By which they usually mean people equally attracted to both men and women, or less polite ways of phrasing it. So pervasive this thought is that many people deny it in themselves. Then again I think a lot of the people who so strongly believe in the 'homosexuality is a choice' dogma are actually either homosexual or bisexual themselves, but don't admit to it. They decided to just date someone off the opposite sex, so they assume everyone else can do the same.

Of course I have no evidence to back this up. It's hard to get evidence on how often people deceive themselves. And I certainly don't suggest the theory that some have that 'all people are bi'. But through personal experience, other people's anecdotes and observations I suspect a lot more people are bisexual to some degree than they would admit.

I refuse to peck around for a full response on a smartphone screen, but suffice to say for now that we are working from a similar data set; I am quite aware that sexuality is currently simplified as a scale.

One of the reasons why I like this forums so much is how much I have learned from being here. I was always very open minded, but I just didn't know much about the whole topic of gender, sex, and sexuality. I never stumbled about this topic before, as I'm cis and probably hetero. But having read so much about this, from all you nice people has in a way opened my eyes to all the hetero- and cisnormativity in our society. That of course is uncomfortable, learning how bad so many people think about others, but I prefer it over being ignorant and, through that, unwillingly and unknowingly intolerant.

And just because I consider some men very attractive doesn't mean I'm sexually attracted to them. I mean, damn, David Tennant e.g. is incredibly handsome in my eyes.

There's really no evidence of it, but it's my headcanon that as her boss Tai knows and doesn't care. Like, maybe her legal paperwork isn't finished or she just told her just because. It just seems like something that'd be more likely than not.

Something bothers me...

"Hey Tai?  You've got a lot of piercings..."

Does she?  We see the ears.  Maybe her tongue?  Not visible, but possible.  We know about her hood, but would Claire?

In that shirt, nipple piercings would probably be visible.  But really, alll I see are the ears.  Is that "a lot"?

Hanners has a lot of piercings, and that's just in the ears... she'd also be a good one to ask about sanitary conditions...

When I saw this comic in the stream I was afraid Jeph would be planning something evil. Something along the lines of Claire dragging Marten off to accompany her for a piercing, just like he did with Tai, and Marten not knowing that she's talking about her ears. Thanks for not doing this cheap joke, Jeph!

Edit: It also just occurred to me, that this arc might deal with anxiety issues, as Claire apparently has a history with these. Why else would she have had Ativan at hand when Clinton performed his grande faux pas[/s] after the wedding. Let's hope for some positive character developments here!

People are prone to putting other people in boxes, and sometimes, when they are looking for someone who they need for something (a person to get support from, someone who'd lend you money, someone who'll watch your child, provide information on Egyptian history...), they look into a particular box, whose contents seem to meet the criteria. For example, if you don't know an Egyptologist, you'll probably look for someone with interest in ancient history next. Of course, doing so, they fail to account for some people who are not "tagged" in their mind as fitting the criteria.

tl;dr: Tai seems more like the adventurous one, so Claire probably forgot about Hanners. Or heck, Jeph did. Or maybe Claire just was thinking about piercings and Tai was the most geographically available.

Also, a gentle reminder to not go overboard with shipping. The forum does not particularly like it. I realize this may be unfamiliar waters for some members who have just recently docked here, but still, the forum is *sunglasses* not a shipping haven.

squee.

I say again, SQUEE

Getting my ears pierced was a big deal for me too. The first thing where I actively did something about transition, rather than just rolling with the punches. An admission that this was what I wanted, an irrevocable step in my own mind. It *was* the decision to have surgery, not just what was needed for urinary function and to remove cancer risk, but to have normal female genitalia. Or as close as I could get.

The rest followed inevitably, but this, this was my decision. And my acknowledgement to myself that this is what I'd always wanted, always needed, since childhood.

It's entirely likely that Tai has talked about her piercings, including ones you can't see. She likes to talk about her hood piercing after all. Assuming she hasn't shown them off to the co-workers/friends anyway... This is Tai we are talking about. She dropped trousers in front of Marten when she got the piercing done with no problem. I guess I can see why Claire would be nervous. I can't say I had the same reaction though.. I got my left ear pierced back in high school, when I was in boy-mode and that was the 'cool' thing to do. Probably my one nod to being coolness... but I really just wanted both ears pierced. It just wasn't done back then, unless you were showing off that you were gay, and I had enough trouble with that. When I made my decision that I needed to transition I went out and got  both ears done. The left side had grown over by then. And that was ten years before I was able to actually get around to transitioning... So it really wasn't that big a thing for me.
