Jeph has said outright that the art style will vary and that we're wrong if we try to interpret it as plot communication.

In relation to interpretation, possibly - but IICIH quoted Jeph as using the words "plot communication", meaning "the message that Jeph intended to convey through the art".

Hello, mods? FYI, the comic numbers are off on this thread title.

(on topic) I wonder if I want to know what Hanners is talking about in the first panel.

The world may never know.

The silliest explanation I can come up with on short notice is that she's referring to Winslow farts.

It is really weird and kind of offputting to me how obsessive some people get about Faye’s (and it’s always Faye) figure. My art naturally varies from strip to strip, if she looks “skinnier” or something it’s just how I happened to draw her that day.

With Faye working out and reducing the booze it would have been plausible that she was being drawn skinnier for a reason, but that wasn't it.

You can never truly be prepared for this.

As for the Sub v Dub debate, I can take either depending on my general mood, though I will admit it's more work to follow in Sub mode.  I do have some issues with Dubbing, and sometimes it makes me cringe when I hear/see it in the original Japanese with Subtitles.

Then again, some things just sound ..... better in the original.

  • Be nice to everybody. So you're better than them.

I didn't spend masses of free time studying Japanese to watch stinkin' dubs.
(Though I must admit modern dubs have greatly improved.)
The great thing about subs is I can now understand occasional bits of dialog.

I can't stand subbing, because Japanese is completely different from tonal cues, and I can't make any sense of the dialogue because it's not spoken in a fashion that communicates meaning that matches the subbed words.  The only anime I watch subbed is Bible Black, because the dub of that is almost legendarily awful.

In totally unrelated news, was I the only one who thought that Panel 1 was Hannelore opening up to Marigold about "lady issues"?  This is probably very wrong-headed of me, but it was all I could think of with that context (and it's now driving me nuts to not be able to come up with a better idea).

I'll concur with this even with my admitted enjoyment of a good dub. It's fun to be able to pick out tonal cues (like the poster below you mentioned) and words/dialogue. I need to get back on the pony and reteach myself what I forgot after visiting Tokyo this summer. I want to try to go back possibly this spring so I can catch the cherry blossom season while my brother's still stationed there.

Also this comic is win. Over joyed Hanners is over joyed.

Also everyone who picked the Hanners/Emily will do something surreal option may award themselves on e-cookie.

on the subbed vs dubbed, I usually go for subbed, but there are a few where i prefer the dubbed version. FLCL is one where I believe that the dubbed version is better than the subbed version.

"I think my face is stuck like this", as distorted by being spoken through an immobile smiling face. The words in the bubble are not an English sentence taken literally, but are phonetic representations of what she would sound like.

Yes they do. I suppose I should have said that they default to English-dubbed since they're distributed by Madman.

Obviously I'm not about to take any 'message' from the way Marigold is drawn, but I don't really like the way she looks in these strips. Especially the hair. I guess I need to wait a few months until Jeph evolves his style again...

We've known that a while. She would be quite happy if Marigold had a reasonable number of babies.

It's like all those private detectives in novels, films, TV etc. We never get to see the cases where they actually get paid...

If that's the case, Jeph would know at least that much about her, if not her name.

I hope not. We've got too many sideburned brunettes in this comic already. (I think her hairstyle looks an awful lot like Dora's.)

Dora has hair coming down the side of her face like that, which at least one character described as sideburns. They said something like "maybe it's the sideburns", and Dora said "I'm bringing them back," exactly the way Marten said it in an earlier strip. Sorry I don't know the strip number...

I wonder if we saw some foreshadowing of a future plot in this episode. Dora has been dropping hints about money, even though COD is doing well. I'm wondering if we are going to see  Dale bring a different work ethic to COD and possibly increase sales. This could place him in contention with Faye.
