To be fair, fedoras have a lot of loaded connotations in internet/geek/whatever culture, this is a good read on the subject.

Quote
Conscious of culture and history as we are, we yearn for a touch of class. But when women online who’re fed up with online harassment and nice guy entitlement see an eager young man trying his best to strike a smooth pose under that infernal hat—pinching the brim, faux-brooding finger to chin and crooked smirk—we just see chasing ass. It’s become too intentional, too choreographed, too staged. It seems to hide something. It suggests inner conflict.

Quote
Even if you disagree with the hypothesis linking the forever-alone fedora and the friend-zoned nice guy, you can at least see why it explains the high volume of mockery aimed at the hat—and why some defend it in militant tones usually reserved for explaining the right to make rape jokes.

Not necessarily, just because they use the hat doesn't mean they own it. Sometimes a hat is just a hat. If it's the hat and other aspects as well, sure, but it's unfair to judge someone based on one article of clothing they happen to think looks cool.

I'm not in the business of wasting time trying to figure out if someone wearing a fedora is truly a Fedora or just a dumbass with no sense of fashion. Thus it is a trivial matter to lump the latter group into the former. I am also not in the business of being fair with judgements, which is probably why I don't care for many of the people on this forum.

I've never even heard of these fedora connotations.

Obviously they developed in a little pressure-cooker of fashion and never really leaked out to the general public.

I had, however, noticed that they'd fallen out somewhat among the group of people with whom they were most associated (no, not the 90+ crowd...)  I think it happened around the time Wal-Mart started carrying the really cheap ones.  That usually kills any fashion trend.

Yeah, those connotations are pretty normal, I've encountered it in a lot of places. I mean, this example is kind of ridiculous and out there, but say someone wears a tall, white pointy hat, you're still gonna think of certain associations even if they actually only wear it because they think it's a good look and they've never even heard of the KKK. A hat is not always just a hat.

I never said always, Metope. But in this case you should give someone the benefit of the doubt unless they give you a reason not to. The hat alone should not be enough.

I believe everyone here who says they've never heard of the connotations and think fedoras are cool because of the way they look, but the fact that the friendzone/nice guy/forever alone thing paired with fedoras is so widespread there are several websites and blogs dedicated to mocking fedoras and the people who wear them, make the connotations real. You can wear a fedora all you want, and personally you know you're not one of those Nice Guys (none of the people on this forum seems to be like that at all), but if someone has a negative reaction to your head wear of choice at least you know why.

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

I give people the benefit of the doubt more often than not, but it's impossible to be completely neutral regarding anything. To me, fedoras really do represent those things I posted. Plus, purely stylistically speaking, the ball cap + formal wear/fedora + t-shirt thing Jace said is pretty good. I kind of like to keep casual and formal clothes separate.

Oh yeah, and that's fine. I'm pretty sure the clothes I wear are not to everyone's taste either, a lot of people would probably call me a hipster jerk, but whatever, everyone likes different things. If I wore something that had negative connotations for some people, I'm aware I could be judged thereafter though, even if I knew those connotations didn't really apply to me as a person.

Sorry, didn't see the edit. Several websites dedicated to "fedora-shaming" shows that a lot of people are aware of those connotations, therefore making the connotations a real thing. At least that's how I see it.

If it's good enough for Indy and for Pratchett it's good enough to be worn by you as a sign of your respect for those men. I suspect that 99.99% of the people on this planet and 99.98% of the people on the internet have no awareness of the fedora shaming movement.

You may be right, but the internet is a massive place, and it's really easy for one person to encounter something on a regular basis while other people never even come across it once. Where I (and Jace) come from, this is pretty well known and has been for a long time.

I've got a small collection of fedoras and trilbies. I've been gathering them since I was a teenager, to wear for dressed up nights, before the connatations were really a thing. Although I don't know how people feel about lady folk wearing the hats.
I think the connotations are currently only known by people who frequent the internet, and spaces that deal with gender issues in particular. They definitely haven't spread into my local meat life.

Oh no, Metope my comment wasn't directed at you at all- I just think the whole thing has been taken a little too far. Way to go, Internet.

I know that not all head gear is appropriate, but some of it is a little more obvious (see pointy white hats and certain colored bandanas). I've personally never come across the Fedora Debacle before and I went to a Fashion School. I'm kind on the same side of this as Method- sometimes a hat is just a hat.

Judging people based on one particular fashion choice seems petty, imo. I mean....is everyone who wears a button down shirt a corporate whore? Is everyone who owns a pair of Uggs a brain dead idiot? They are if you listen to the Internet.

also from the first page of google results for 'fedoras'
(That's generally my knowledge of them as well)

Oh yeah, some of them are definitely trying to be cool, and this thread has also proved a lot of people aren't aware of the connotations at all, so it's not like everyone who wears a fedora is awful. However I do make assumptions about people based on what they wear and how they present themselves* every day though, and I am sure people do the same with me. If I see a person who is all dressed in black with crazy coloured dyed hair and lots of tattoos, I am going to assume their favourite musician is not Justin Bieber. Everyone signals a little bit about themselves by how they appear, consciously or not.

(*I don't overly judge people though, just wanted to make that clear.)

Wait, you're saying belts doesn't equal heroin user? That explains a lot, now I understand why that guy looked at me so weirdly when I asked him who is dealer was!

Edit: lepetitfromage, they are cool people, but now at least they are aware the connotations exist, and why Jace got on that fedora rant in the first place. We're not trying to ban people from wearing fedoras (at least I'm not), just explain why some people don't like them. Like that quote in my first post about this says, it's okay to not agree with and ignore the connotations, but at least they explain why some people react the way they do.

People think I'm cool? Yay!! Thanks.  :-D

I've been aware of the connotations for a while and it won't stop me from wearing them. Like I said though, I may not deal with any negativity personally because the hate seems to be mainly aimed at men.

There's some controversial articles of clothing that people think say a lot about the person who wears them, crocs, uggs, black thick framed glasses. All they can say at for almost guarantee is the person wearing them likes them. I'm not saying people in this thread are thinking [clothing item] = stupid/bad person but it is hard for it to not some across that way if you don't take in the whole post. I agree with Meotope it is possibly to make an educated guess about someone's likes or personality on their clothing, and as long as you're aware you're guessing and prepared to have your assumption proven wrong by giving the person a chance, I'm cool with you thinking my hat is silly.

Although Jace seems he's just trying to be angry and piss people off and that's nothing new.

Its so easy to do so I don't even try anymore. But seriously fedoras with tshirts are like blazers with cargo shorts. You think you look cool but you just look bad.

That is factually accurate.

Yep, that's pretty much it. I've been proven wrong a bunch of times and I think that's great, it would be pretty boring if dress codes were so standard we knew everything about everyone by one glance. At the same time, stereotypes exist for a reason, and a lot of it is also probably on purpose. Like that time a guy was talking to me, saw the way I presented myself, learned I went to art school and a little bit of what kind of music I listened to and he just blurted out 'you don't eat meat, do you?', and no, I was in fact a vegetarian at the time, it was really easy for him to make that assumption about me. I wasn't offended though, I wanted people to know those things about me.

Also Mastermind, you really are the prettiest princess.

... why did I write Mastermind, brainfart. I've had too much coffee and I'm shaking and I can't really focus, that's probably why.
