Faye vs. Dale
« on: 15 Oct 2013, 18:44 »

I'm seeing two ways this ends. Dale breaks Faye and she loses a lot of her antagonistic attitude...

or Faye breaks Dale and we find out this whole "everything is cool" facade is to hold back the fact that Dale has a NASTY anger management problem if sufficiently provoked. (And nobody can provoke like Faye)

Welcome, new person!

Dale is something Faye hasn't encountered before. He doesn't counterattack, but he doesn't knuckle under either.

She's working through her issues, but she still has a lingering habit of snark as a defense mechanism. She doesn't seem to use it like she did early on in her character development, as a tool to attack and hurt before she gets attacked and hurt though. She seems to use it to test people, if they can put up with her slightly abrasive snark when she's in a good place, they'll be able to handle her when she's in a darker place and relapses into using it in a nasty way.

The other characters of QC all have their own ways of dealing with her, most of them having called her on it by this point
Raven - blunt honesty
Sven - Let her fall when she was drunk and used the 'im just holding on to keep from falling over' line
Angus - Enjoys it
Marten - Endures it

But however they deal with it, they react. Dale is denying her that! He's denying her a reaction to what she has made one of her defining traits. No wonder she's all GRR about it. I can't see Dale having angermanagement issues, so I'm guessing Faye's going to take the next step towards not using snark to test new friends.

To be honest, I just see Dale as one of those guys who just never takes things personally and that remarks and jibes are like water off a duck's back. Even from what little we know about Dale, it does seem like he has not had the easiest life and given the brief glimpse we've had of his jobs, Dale has probably had to deal with offensive supervisors and customers on a regular basis.

Ooh, nice!  We also see how Dora responds in kind, and how she coaches Penelope to "stand up to" Faye (and cheers when she finally "strikes back").

We see how Faye goes easy on Marigold after Angus called a "not-cool" on her.

And of course, we see how she instantly hits it off with Hanners: http://questionablecontent.net/view.php?comic=544 Everybody loves Hanners. :)

That link (and subsequent reading) led me back to two of the best lines in the comic: the one about Hephaestus' browser history and the classic "Q: What's the best way to piss off an indie rock snob? A: Actually enjoy music."

This has nothing to do with the conversation and I am sure it will never happen, but I'd just like to point out that the portmanteau of their names is awesome no matter who is first; Fayle. Daye.

As you may recall, the use of such portmanteaus makes my ears steam.

I do like "Fayle" for all the potential implications in that particular portmanteau.

Dale is capable of sarcastic witty remarks, he and Marigold had that going between them when they were rivals instead of budding friends or even more...
Faye found the one person who could match wits with her and one up her without any prior history, any personal stake, any romantic potential- basically, she found a buddy!

Dale will not only earn her respect, he might earn her trust.

A male Justafriend who can stand up to her could be key to The Pugnacious Peach's recovery.

Marten was more than just a friend for a long time - he was the guy she was going to bang when she got around to getting her head together. Even though it didn't work out that way,  the attraction was there and will always color their relationship. That's a problem she doesn't have with Dale.

As opposed to her other male justafriend...?

You mean the other justafriend with whom she had a long history of mutual attraction that was cut short by her own insecurities before she could act on the feelings...

Or the other justafriend who broke her heart by regressing back to sexual promiscuity....
