That's an awesome helmet. If it weren't for the earwig (which Faye didn't know about when she decreed it), that hardly seems like a punishment.

I grew up in a town where our town walls date back to the 12th century (second oldest example in the country), even the town itself dates back to around the 9th century when the Vikings wanted a base they could launch raids up the river. So hearing Americans and Australians sounding so amazed that their homes date back to the 18th century always makes me chuckle a little.

"The Americans think 100 years is a long time, while the English think 100 miles is a long drive."

No idea who said that originally, but I've always liked it.

Google says it was a fellow named Earle Hitchner in Reader's Digest.

Your Google-fu is stronger than mine, GM. The only attributed quote I found just said "Earle Hitchner", without mentioning any publication.

Then all I found about Earle Hitchner is that he is or was a music writer for the Wall Street Journal. Not the sort of person I'd expect to come up with a remark like that, but then the WSJ is not the sort of publication you'd expect to have a music writer in the first place...

The last panel is strangely fitting for me, as I just finished a hunt for a cockroach that took me through every room of my apartment, tore apart my closet, and basically upended half my stuff until I finally cornered it under a sword scabbard (don't ask) and rushed it with a vacuum cleaner hose and finally got it.

So glad to be moving back to MN next month, where all bugs die off for much of the year and cockroaches are creatures of legends.

C'mon, Hanners, it's not like you're unfamiliar with the question. Also I read Cathy for years just because it was in the comics and I used to read the comics every day. There were only two pages of daily comics when I read them so I just read all of them. It was pretty fucking terrible. Also this:

Not wearing clothes would speed things along...

I'm surprised no one ever pointed out that the helmet was apparently a Calvin and Hobbes reference, speaking of defunct cartoons.

I'm pretty sure that Hannelore knew the trope, but did not understand the trope.

Funny that both today's comic and the one quoted above both have a comment/title from Jeph referencing "Cathy" - gives a good hint as to what he must think of the whole "what on earth shall I wear??" thing (if such a hint is even required).

Humanity is sexist: If a man turns up to a date naked, with beer, the chances of a successful date are considerably lower.

Technically, a platypus is a monotreme, along with four species of echidna (spiny anteater). Australia is filled with poisonous and weird creatures to keep the rest of the world safe...

The way most people look naked is why clothes were invented. Hanners is quite the fashionista actually, so she could do better at advice, but for an anime-watching night in, is anything special beyond "clean casual clothes" required?

Cathy is terrible. And yeah, the puerile obsession with getting girls out of their clothes in every situation, no matter how inappropriate, is pretty tedious. Go and buy a Realdoll®; it's got all the jiggly bits you like to stare at, it'll wear as little as you like, and it won't mind if you objectify it.
