Steve's had more breakups than Marten.
... which, seeing as neither's polyamourous, is just another way to say Steve's had more hookups than Marten.

I think Marten has had much better relationship luck than... say Hanners? or Marten's mom? or Marigold? or Sven?
Well, Hanners ain't gonna happen. Her pretend date with Sven was probably the best she will ever do (hugging her dad, in public view, without anxiety medication, was a HUGE milestone, though).

Marten's mom, well... she's seen plenty of action, so to speak. And was married at least once on record. So she does have that up on him. But besides Mr Reed, there hasn't really been anything worthy of note.

(click to show/hide)

Marigold has some social issues to break through. It's not that she doesn't want to have a meaningful relationship, but she does need to get past the delusion that she isn't worthy of one (I know that feeling well...)

Sven is probably worse off. He's done a whole bunch of banging and, until Faye came along, it didn't mean much to him. Faye was most likely his first and last meaningful thing (that "date" with Hannelore happened shortly afterward), but as of his last appearance, he seriously regrets fucking that up (in a literal and metaphorical sense...)

You're pretty pessimistic- Hannelore has been improving throughout the comic (minus her medicated intro), and there's no reason to believe she will never go on an actual date. Not necessarily one with physical contact, at least not without lots of saran wrap, but a date. And Sven is pretty clearly going through a reform period so the next time he gets close with some one he doesn't fuck it up. Hope's not lost for either of them.

I didn't take Faye for someone who would use a single long pillow. I suppose it would be hard to flip over the pillow if you're sharing one and it gets too hot.

On Marten's shitty life: Both Dora and Faye have ended up with people who take drama and angst in their stride, with humour. The thing, i think, about relationships is finding somebody who will happily take your crazyness by the horns and (with kindness and empathy) beat it into submission.

I'm sure Marten will eventually find someone whose brand of crazy he can relate to and who can look after him too.

Is Dora's remark supposed to support Faye's warning, or deny it? I mean, a hundred years is an eye-blink in China, but in America it's probably like the Dark Ages.

I think it's meant to excuse the state of the basement.  Defensive Dora is defensive.

Of course, my first reading was "don't use fire! this building is historically valuable!"

At which point I started wondering about Dora's priorities ...

Leave aside history - I took it that Dora is simply conscious that an older building is a higher fire risk.  Remember also that Faye has a history of burning down buildings...

In parts of the US a hundred-year-old building is considered old. In Massachusetts, not so much (we have four hundred years of history! OK you can stop laughing now, Old World People.) So yeah, it's definitely because the place was built before modern building codes were enacted.

Thank you. I was wondering what that was about. All I could think of was that 100 years was long enough to accumulate an impressive number of spiders in the basement.

I grew up in a town where our town walls date back to the 12th century (second oldest example in the country), even the town itself dates back to around the 9th century when the Vikings wanted a base they could launch raids up the river. So hearing Americans and Australians sounding so amazed that their homes date back to the 18th century always makes me chuckle a little.

I think it has more to do with the fact that 100 year old wood, unless you live in a very humid area, is going to be very very dry. I didn't take it as a statement of it being historical as much as "This entire building would turn into a blaze in seconds".
