Spec Ops: The Line
« on: 31 Oct 2013, 20:18 »

Fuckin' hell.

I'm not sure there's much more to say this second. Other than that I'm surprised there wasn't already a thread.

So good. Been a while since I finished it, but so, so good.

I think we might have discussed it somewhere else, under some other thread. Yeah, definitely, Somebody posted a link to a marine's reaction to the game, which contains spoilers ofc, but here it is.

This Marine's opinion?
(click to show/hide)

I wish to the darkest of gods I could do SOMETHING to get Six Days In Fallujah out to the world. That would make Spec Ops look like something you'd had out to small children to learn fables from in Kindergarten by comparison, at least as far as an actual experience of the reality "over there" goes.

GM I know exactly what you are talking about.  Would be cool if it came out but I don;t think it ever will  :-\

I don't think The Line is supposed to be an experience of 'the reality 'over there''.

Six Days *does* need to be, though. I do agree with that.

Never got around to playing this. Really wanted to because of all the people saying it's story was something else, but never got around to..

I'd suggest renting rather than buying. Can put it to bed in a few days.

If you're not going to pay the devs any money, why not just pirate?

The Devs get money from rentals.

I didn't know that they did.

I figured I was just helping keeping my friendly nearby rental place going.

Well at the very least, the rental place buys the game a few times.

True, but that doesn't mean that you renting it does anything else than keeping a business that's going to die within ten years alive anyways. If you want to convince publishers that games like Spec Ops are worth giving out, buy it. If you don't care, or don't have the money... no ethical difference to be found.

Just like Netflix is killing the movie industry and primary DVD purchases?

Family Video *might* go the way of Blockbuster, but so far it's held its niche here in Indiana at least: low income rentals.

I don't know how their business model actually looks from where they're sitting, but there's a lot of people in this town who go to them instead of Netflix. A lot of folks here still don't have good home internet connections, or bank accounts with credit cards (if you're aware of Redbox's way of doing business). Or homes for that matter for some; this was the place we'd go to get stuff for little 'movie nights' at the homeless shelter I used to stay at.

They will have a market as long as there are rural areas without high-speed internet.

So I watched some extra credit bits about spec ops the line an wooaw, do I regret not trying it.  :psyduck:  So I turned to the extremely cynical Yahtzee to get his take on it, hoping to get a laugh and be reassured that I dodge a bullet by not picking it up... I was so wrong...

This was recently on sale on xbox live, and I picked it up based solely on what I read here.

Thank you.  Thank you so much for the recommendations.  A fantastic game.  Not disappointed in the least with my purchase.  You guys rock.

Found this game through Extra Credits, a VG-discussion show that (used to be related to) Penny Arcade. Bought it from the Steam sale this winter. I'm not big into playing shooters, but OH MY is it a good inversion of traditional shooters.
