Pacific Rim: Kaijueiga, America style
« on: 29 Apr 2013, 11:33 »

So the new trailer for Pacific Rim got released at wonder con and it looks like this.

Yes the first words in the trailer were a report of a Category 3 Kaiju. (giant monsters for those of you not familiar with the original Godzilla movies)

I was kinda meh about this movie from the first trailer but now I'm pretty pumped.

"They counted on the humans to hide; to fail. They never considered we would rise to the challenge."

"Today we face the monsters that are at our door - We are canceling the Apocalypse!"

I can dig it. Go-go allegorical Ragnarök!

It looks good and I can't wait, especially with Guillermo Del Toro making it and Idris Elba in it

I just went and saw it. GODDAMN.

Del Toro is getting a christmas card from me this year, THIS is how you do a summer action movie. I loved it from the second it started till the second it stopped. The plot isn't deep and there's some hollywood cheese here, but that isn't what you're there for, you're in the theater to watch giant robots (with stunning visual design) beat the ever loving hell out of giant monsters (who are also awesome looking). Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. It's not going to change the world, but it is awesome, and sometimes awesome is exactly what you need.

The only one that didn’t break [during filming Pacific Rim] was Rinko Kikuchi, the girl. She never complained… I asked Rinko her secret and she said ‘I think of gummi bears and flowers.’ I try to do that in my life now.

I always forget to check if there's a thread about a film before posting in the Just Watched thread.
Also I just came back from Pacific Rim. Loved it. Big, action spectacle film that should raise the bar for any that think it is okay to have sub-par acting, dialogue, story, etc because, "It's action so just turn your brain off to watch it." It's even full if tropes and cliches but they're used so well. Loved it.

I just fond out that my local theater isn't screening Pacific Rim--instead they are showing The Lone Ranger and World War Z. Yup. Good job. Luckily, I'm moving back to the city for school in a week, so I'll catch it in a proper cinema.

Saw it yesterday, was honestly a little disappointed. I had hoped for slightly less awkward character interaction.. The final battle (the underseas one) was also pretty underwhelming, and I found it sort of weird how ridiculously full of stereotypes the film was, self aware or not. Pretty stupid how they discarded of the Russion and Chinese crew in a minute, to have all the spotlight on the 'merican dudes. I was also expecting the silly science dude to use his ability to "drift" with the Kaiju to control one.. That never happened, instead he did.. nothing? I honestly can't remember. Too much crazy science (yeah, let's blow up a 1+ megaton nuclear bomb a few hundred meters away from the main characters, and hope they make it). Thankfully, the film showed that it was self aware, and not taking itself too seriously, if not this would have been a disaster of a movie.

That said, it wasn't bad. The effects and battles were great, though I had expected slightly more from all the praise. I'm surprised of how big a part of the (long) movie was made up of CGi shots though, Del Tore must have used his budget well, because there was A LOT. Music was cool as well, though a not-too serious film like this could gladly have used some more licensed music to spice up the action.

Man of Steel still has this year's most spectacular visuals, imo.

From all the excitement that I got from my friends and relatives, I was actually disapointed by pacific rim. I did enjoy it, but I'm glad my brother bought it for black friday pricing and not regular pricing.
