Ugh: 26,069 points.

I got screwed up in Australia. Think that's the most I've ever been off from a spot (a good 1,200 km).

Getting better at my Cyrillic, though.

yeah,  australia's starting to piss me off. what with it's long stretches of unmarked road through the deserts.

i think what the game needs is some way to jump up or down the road a few miles at a time, that way you could at least make your way to a town of something.

I actually like the way it is. I think it makes the "you are abducted by the CIA and dropped off in the middle of nowhere" feeling* more realistic.

Yeah, that's the general vibe of the game.

"You are now in the middle of nowhere. You have no GPS; just a general map of the earth. You will not be allowed to know where you are until you have made a guess. For every guess you make, you will be awarded an amount of money, based upon how accurate your guess was. You will not get the money until after you have made five 'trips'."

Did it put you in a diabolical location, too? There's several in Aussieland. They REALLY need to get out and do some more Street View drives through the outback.

Yeah, it put me next to a creek that has no Wikipedia article, but whose name happens to be the same as a hill on the opposite side of Australia.

I was just landed on an absolutely nondescript road somewhere... except that one of those cars was right behind me.  :-D

Yay for advertising!

Edit: and you know what? The car passed the Google Street View car at some point, and during one frame, it's license plate was unblurred.  I found out that I was in Sao Paulo (the state). From that car alone.

And with the help of Loki, who was kind enough to translate a Cyrillic sign (which contributed nothing sadly, but just told me to lock the gate after driving through it) I just managed 31540 points in this game:

Dude. Google Translate. Use the Cyrillic-language keyboard. It improved my scores in Russia and the former Soviet Republics IMMENSELY.

He did use it, but said it didn't come up with anything useful. Maybe because there were й-symbols in the sign.

Hell, if I did that? I'd be getting scores in the low thousands.

Still have issues, even when I have help.

well personally, i don't really get what the point of the game is if you're just going to find a street sign and google your exact location.

i'm usually happy when i can get within 1000 miles

Actually, I did get a score of about 20k without assistance (see previous page). It gets difficult without at least a language translator, though.

...you got street signs? Luuuuucky! I don't think I ever saw a streetsign that was legible. The most successful I got was within 20 meters, by googling the address of a shop for bridal dresses that conveniently happened to be a few meters away from me.

It can be a test of your ability to recognise landscapes but also of your google-fu. Just how you'd like to play the game.

I understand that there is a slightly-older game that has a similar premise, except you just have to type the name of the city. That game is named "Pursued" - and it has a time limit.

Personally, I prefer Geoguessr, because you can take as long as you want or as quickly as you want.

Did one without Google Assistance (okay, I did have to use translate for the one area, but that was only because I didn't believe the first sign I saw).

Still ended up with 24,673 points.

I saw this game linked on another forum. It's similar to geoguessr, except it's a bit more restrictive about moving around, and more importantly it allows you to limit the locations to one region.

edit -- just had a serious derp moment. I told it to give me locations in Allegany County, Maryland. It gave me Street View images of my mom's house (which I'm currently sitting in). I asked for a hint.  :psyduck:

It's gotten a bit harder to guess some places, and the game's GPS isn't quite dead-on in some spots. Best I've been able to get lately is in the 27k range - and that was with a lot of help and no Japan/Taiwan or Russian locales.
