Because that outfit is basically what happens when a 6 year old is allowed to dress themselves. I'm hoping that the reason you're wearing gumboots is because it was raining.

Also, 6 year olds are the best dressers.

Did you have a cute umbrella to go with the outfit? That would perfect it.

Even though it's already pretty perfect, it would be EXTRA perfect.

So, I've been looking on ebay and considered buying a civil war shell jacket, just cause I thought they looked cool, fit nice (not long like a modern military jacket), and would look original. Good Idea/ Bad Idea?

Could be good, it depends on the kind. For what it's worth, there are many different cuts for modern military jackets as well. You've got the ones like I have that go halfway down the thigh, the ones that just go a bit long, or the ones that are made to go perfectly to the waist and no farther.

I was figuring one of the ones that wasn't particularly fancy. Probably the artillery officer jacket with the red piping. I kinda figured people would probably think it was cool and different, but not obviously recognize it as a civil war jacket. I've looked at other military uniform jackets before, too, particularly Russian. Most of the modern American (and most other country's) uniforms just don't look different enough, though. Do you know of any other Nation's military jackets (that are freely available) that are particularly interesting (and not too crazy)?

Camo, or solid color? Solid color would be harder to find, but there are lots of original camo patterns out there. For example, swiss alpenflage, Belgian "jigsaw", British DPM (also comes in a desert pattern, which is just two color), and German flecktarn. The cut of the jacket might also depend on whether you get a jacket designed as a field shirt or a field jacket. Mine is a jacket, which is probably why it is longer, I am pretty sure the ones meant to be just button up shirts are shorter.

There are a lot of patterns, and if you have a decently stocked surplus store near you, you should be able to find one you like.

You mean socks that do not match the outfit, or socks that do not match each other?

If the latter, then buy new socks.
If the former, then also buy new socks. Although unless your sock drawer consists of nothing buy rainbow patterned knee-highs, then you are both awesome and under-socked. All I wear are white/grey anklets, and they go with everything except my leather work shoes, which I wear black socks with. These match pretty much everything, or, more accurately, they don't clash with anything. They just exist.

However, you could always go out and buy more socks?

Andy, I am labelling you as someone with poor taste. There, it happened.

Anyways, my problem is that I have two different kinds of ankle socks apparently, one has about 1/2" more fabric on the ankle than the others. I do just need to buy new socks though, most of them have holes in the bottoms.

You should probably never attempt to judge people on their taste in clothing ever.

How do people who know clothes feel about girls wearing boxers as shorts?
Not ugly novelty boxers, just plain or striped.
They are, in my opinion, perfect shorts, long enough to cover the worst part of my thighs and comfy and breathable. And since my only other choices are soffees which I can't wear because I don't have the legs and basketball shorts which I wear on occasion but they just don't look good, they seem like the best choice.
also, boxers are incredibly cheap (at least, compared to normal shorts).
But I really have no bearing of how people view them... is it okay to wear them? or am I wearing underwear as clothes and should be burned?

Lila, I really don't think you should wear them out in public... Boxers are hella comfy but really, they are underwear and deserve to stay that way. The crotches are NOT made for ladies and will probably just end up looking really dumpy.
There are other shorts options out there if you look hard enough that will fit your requirements!

It's funny and cute when your girlfriend wears your boxers, but it probably won't work if you're going out.

While we're on subject of comfortable clothes looking trashy; beaters and sweat pants in public, in combination or alone. I think never, your thoughts?

I can tolerate beaters (though I hate the nickname) if it's really hot or something and you're mostly just dressing for comfort than for looking good. And I can tolerate sweatpants, but it's obviously not something that makes you look really styllsh or whatever. I just don't think it's as horrible-looking as some people seem to think, but I may just be desensitized, though, because everyone wears them all the frickin' time here when just running quick errands or whatever.

The combination I'm not so sure about, though. Sounds very KFed or something.

ETA: Yeah, my opinion on beaters were for men. They can look really really great on women if you have the body for them, but they can also look really bad if you don't, as with most clothes.

Beaters are acceptable, but not great, on men, and adorable on most women.
I don't think that sweatpants should ever be seen outside of a) the gym b) one's home. There are lots of pants that are equally comfy and less hideous.

Beaters on women if you got no boobs is A-OK, if you ask me.

There is a right way for a guy to look good in a beater but I can't quite put my finger on how right now. I'm sure I've seen it though.

Sweatpants outside the house mean you have given up on life.

The correct way for a guy to do beaters is: Jeans, blunstone boots (or equivilant), relatively short hair, facial hair optional, lean but muscley build.

otherwise known as looking like a tradey (the good type of tradey,  not the fat guy who's overalls aren't quite over all)

Also the wearing of a button up shirt over the beater means easy transformation from highly casual tradey to quite acceptably dressed guy.

Ok so I saw a jacket in an op-shop today. It was basically this but in a really nice grey. I'm thinking maybe I should get it. Thoughts?

The odd thing is that at one point I owned a jacket exactly like the one I saw but it was both way too small for me, had too much of the distressed look for me to like it too much (huge white scratches all over the chest and back) and didn't really fit in with the rest of my wardrobe. I ended up selling it to a friend of mine who is much smaller than I.

purely from my own personal standpoint, while the jacket doesn't have me clammouring to trade my soul for it, you could certainly do worse and the boots are a no for me but that's only because as someone who actually rides horses the [ironics/wannabe/whatever you want to call it] cowboy thing that some people like. If however you have you're heart set on a set of cowboy boots I think you'd be better off with something in a darker leather.

That is a pretty good jacket if you like that sort of thing, but those are just cowboy boots, and I feel like unless you are a really cute girl wearing a dress there is no real place for cowboy boots in this world anymore.

I have green suede cowboy boots that have a warped heel so they wont go on one foot but I love them and want to get them mended, also I want proper cowboy boots.

But I dress like a six year old so the closer to convincing people that my want to play dress up 24/7 is fashion, the better.

It is okay if you are actually a cowboy(girl) right? I keep wanting to talk my mom out of buying them but her husband does own cows and she has to help deliver them sometimes.

And Andy, I think you'd count as the pretty girl in a dress and you do ride horses a lot, right?
