Sad but adorable!

Guys, the lady and I have been discussing it and we'll be doing a US tour in 2011. Probably around August/September and we'll be hitting L.A, New York, Boston and Niagra Falls. Anyone want to put forward a tentative offer for hangouts?

We've only got two weeks to do this and given it is going to cost us about $2500 each in airfares we can only afford to go to so many places and while I did want to go to Chicago, it just didn't make the cut.

I'd be willing to hang out. I mean, that's like a year and a half away, and I can't plan that far ahead, but yeah. If I was there (anywhere there) at the time I would be there.

I keep a $5000 cushion.

The real bitch of this situation was I got dinged because I was paying off my credit card and saving money.

So keeping a cushion in your checking is not a bad idea.

Yeah that's exactly what I was getting at. It's quite possible that I happen to pay rent AND pay off my credit card AND make a student loan payment AND put money into my retirement account/savings all at the same time, and if I do that then I'll be drawing several thousand all at once pretty much by accident. Most people think I'm unnecessarily keeping an enormous buffer in my checking account, but I look at it as more of a necessity.

My dad's dog is a labradoodle and he's pretty big. He's also very lively and although they've been training him and he now walks to heel and comes when he's called and that kind of thing, he still goes completely demented if anyone comes to the door, or if they walk past the house, or just if he can hear voices. Whenever the postman or newspaper person or a visitor comes we have to hold him back and he's too powerful for me. I keep getting hurt (a few days ago he cut my foot and leg open with his claws) and he isn't getting any better.

Does anyone know how we can train him out of this? It isn't so much excitement if someone comes in, it's a territorial defensiveness and it's causing problems.

Drop LA, it sucks.

Totally.

Wasn't the plan to have a FriscoCon sometime in '11? I'll be on the west coast at some point then as well.

It'd be cool if we both happened to manage to end up in the same place at the same time, Jimmy, as unlikely as that is.

even as a broke-ass student/barely-above minimum wager i've always tried to keep a cushion of at least $1500 or so in my bank account because of the same thing jho mentioned, where sudden expenses can come up without warning. this month it was a necessity because in addition to my regular monthly bills i also had to buy christmas gifts and drop about $400 on applications for school within the same couple of weeks, and even after all that i still have money in there in case expenses like that come up again. i also try to pay off my credit card bill's full balance every month whenever possible because interest drives me insane. the idea of living paycheck to paycheck really makes me uncomfortable, i doubt i could ever do it.

Looks like a job for... Victoria Stilwell!

If you trawl through those episodes there are probably a couple of hundred where the dog does that at the beginning and no longer does that at the end. I watched marathons of this show last summer. I don't know why.

I should be back at uni in less than twelve hours :D That's if the snow and ice don't hold us up too much.

In other news, I have a solution to this problem. If they make it into ice cream and leave it in tubs outside, they can sell it when the snow clears!

First school week of 2010 is finished.
-I have gotten better in chemistry without knowing and now the teacher sees me as a really good student which I am not.
-I got 97% on in math. This comes from someone who failled every term last year except the final. I am incredibly happy.
-I (still) got the highest marks in French because people do not know how to write or listen. It is sad.
-We were filming a sort explanative movie for a Robotics competition! We are using the theme of Super Mario Bros. and I am MArio and it was fun to film. Pictures, maybe.
-I am now following lots of you guys on Twitter because I am bored. Sorry if that's a bother!

I just ahd my first proper derby training session!  Who would have thought I could ever enjoy two hours on intense exercise.  I am totes glad I have spent the last few months learning the basics and skating ALOT though, because otherwise I would have been wrecked after about 10 minutes.

But it was awesome!  And I'm apparently a pretty good skater!  I am totes aiming to be an awesome tiny jammer.

I got home and I was so hyped up I was talking really fast and Aaron had no idea what was going on.

My next step is to buy super awesome knee pads, as I have completely ruined mine by practicing falls.

man that is an awkward situation, when someone shows you something they are proud of that you think is stupid. And then when you lie and pretend to like it, they might make one for you. I almost got that just before Christmas when a designer at one of my freelance clients randomly told me about his Star Wars costuming, but the crisis was averted because his costumes were seriously well done. Anyway take heart because it could be worse; while with people at work that's bad, with relatives it's worse.

However, the art teacher in me feels the need to point out...

Dude used gradients.

Gradients aren't automatically bad, they are simply a tool that can be easily misused. Lens Flares or Comic Sans are automatically bad, but gradients are a legit tools that novice/non-designers have an unfortunate tendency to misuse. The general rule of thumb is that gradients in hue are bad while gradients in value are fine, but there are plenty of exceptions to both.

My next step is to buy super awesome knee pads

I don't know why* but you saying that reminds me of the totally random anecdote about how I couldn't find protective pads for sale anywhere in Cairo back when I lived in Egypt. It seemed like such a stupid thing not to have there; everyone played soccer, but there were no shin pads?

Also, I have been up since 10pm and have probably done about 4 hours of painting tonight. Now I am hungry and require toast.

Perhaps. I've never seen a good use of lens flare, but pretty much every rule in visual design can be broken sometimes.

That is a good example of lense flare. I don't mind using a color gradient now and then, but only as a slight, barely visible filter.

Dr. McNinja in Color: Showing you where Lens Flare is appropriate since 2008.

That lens flare does work. That image also has a number of gradients, especially the sky; more "it's not always bad" examples.

I've never seen a good use of lens flare, but pretty much every rule in visual design can be broken sometimes.
