Blog thread! I went to see Transformers 2 at the midnight showing (It was excellent) and then stayed up the rest of the night. When I got home from my friend's house at 5:30, I immediately went to sleep and slept for 15 hours. I don't think I've ever slept that much at one time.

Fun-at-work blog.

Yesterday the outside temperature soared to the dizzy heights of 22C (72F)*.  The 18 month old building I work in, which is only 70% occupied, tripped its main breaker at 5pm because the air-conditioning units were working so hard; fortunately my server room is on the separate smaller trip that also handles lifts and water pumping (there's no gravity-fed water in the building). The power was off for 75 minutes (the time it took someone authorised to touch the main breakers to reach the building).  Those of you who work in wet labs with cultures and the like will know what serious damage such an outage can do to an experiment; the -80 freezers rose to -60 in that time; lots of people were very angry.

Today they were monitoring the power usage carefully.  Not carefully enough, it seems - the outside temperature reached the unheard-of heights of 25C (77F)* and the trip went again at 4pm, and was out for an hour again.

The building manager is on holiday.  I forsee a lot of recriminations and flying crap over the next few days.  Tomorrow is supposed to bring thunderstorms, but Monday "hot" again.

I mentioned the pumped water.  When we had an outside power cut, and everything went off, that meant no water to the sinks in the labs, and therefore no means to clean off contaminents from your hands - so officially people couldn't leave the labs...

Yes, the backup generators in the original design were removed as a cost-saving exercise.

i wish people would not assume that i am into them when i am not.

also, people around me need to stop assuming i am having a thing with someone when i am not.

just to clarify, world: i am a single, lonely girl with no love for anyone.  stop rubbing it in.

I should lend you my friends; the last time a lady friend and I got too drunk we ended up snuggled up on a couch for the entire evening making plans about all the travels we could take together and nobody ever said a word about it. This is nice because we were really drunk and would terrible together; it's really best to just never speak of it again.

Is this your first string instrument, Harry?

Yes, apart from the obligatory teenage guitar dabbling.

I'm used to having all the notes laid out in front of me on a piano keyboard so at this very early stage I can't quite get my head around reading music and locating the notes on the fretboard, but I bought a beginner's how-to-play-the-mandolin book which has a bunch of simple tunes with tablature right below the proper music, and with only four lines mandolin tablature is a piece of piss to read, so I'm already playing (very slow) recognisable tunes!

Blaggy,

Played out, some shitty hardcore band played that was so boring until they gave the drummer the mic and he just let loose and screamed and that was actually pretty fuckin' awesome. I headbanged with a bunch of gothic-types. I grabbed some girl's and she headbutted me in the face and then took me home.

Edit: To give a little insight as to how terrible this band is: Imagine if Creed and U2 teamed up to do a collaborative album. That's what this band sounded like.

So I decided "Fuck it, why do I have a credit card if not to buy fun things? How about instead of waiting until I next get paid and then buying the mandolin, I buy the mandolin today on the credit card and then pay off the credit card when I next get paid."

So that's what I did.

I finished reading a very long book series and decided to pick up a trashy romance novel yesterday.  It had been a while, and sometimes, I just need one to calm my mind. Today, I was walking into work with my nose in the book.  In the boulevard before the entrance to the building, there is usually classical music of some sort playing.  This time, it was perfect because I was at a part in my book that the characters were at a ball and it was what I had imagined the music there to sound like.  It was great.

I gotta talk to the guy in charge of it again.  It seems like this cable station isn't really very professional with the public access stuff.  I don't know if anyone has actually tried to do a real "show" before.  I think people just show home movies and local meetings.

I think I want to do a late night type show where we will go around and review local businesses and have show a few skits and stuff.  Just erase the monologue and celebrity interviews from the Tonight Show format you know.

I did a show on colllege TV back at SUNY Geneseo but that was closed-circuit so anything went.  I assume there are going to be a lot of rules about content.

I like that concept. And yeah, I get the feeling that it's pretty easy for a station to fall into the habit of just accepting what people turn in and not really wanting to put extra effort when somebody wants to do more. I was lucky to come in at a time when the station itself decided to create a music program to show that side of the community after a long period of just getting weird and boring talk shows. So mine became an extension of that and they've been really encouraging and helpful.

I'm not sure what content rules they may have. They're more worried about commercial content here than anything else, because of the non-profit status. My musicians don't have to censor their lyrics, it's just if there is adult language, the show can only air after 10pm.

Good luck, and keep us up to date!

Cycling is the bomb diggity as a stress reliever. I had wanted to go out today but I didn't know until yesterday I'd have today off, so I don't have any plans and then I got this intense anxiety about trying to call anyone or leave my house. Then I got up the courage to ride my bike. And now I feel pretty great! Yay bicycles! Time for lunhc, numnumnum.

YES. bike riding is awesome.

the new road i live on is a rural dead-end on a mountain and down at the end by the gate, there is an awesome hill to bomb. if it's a really beautiful day out i like to smoke a bowl and drive my bike down to the end and go as fast as i possibly can down the hill while admiring all the pretty trees and birds and clouds and shit. it's awesome.

Or, as we like to say in Alger, "it's fucking elegant."

Guys! I have a HUGE blister on my foot. It is the length of my thumb and the thickness of the top section of my thumb and when I cut it open and drained it, the liquid ran all the way down my leg in a horrible warm river of yuck. On the plus side I can now put weight on my foot, albeit whilst shouting "ow ow ow". I have decided to remove the "comfort" pads from the insides of my work boots. They are not comfortable. In fact I'm considering suing.

In other news here is a photo of me and my friends at yesterday's awards ceremony, where we won (from left to right): Overall Student of the Year (from the whole campus, which is huge!), Sociology Student of the Year, no award but one of our best friends so we took her along, English Student of the Year (that's me!), also no award but still awesome, History Student of the Year. Then we had a party.

I can put a copyright photo up on here because I am going to buy a real one. That's how it works, right? The girl standing to the left of me is famously averse to having her photo taken so I'm thrilled that I got her into a good picture. I'm going to get it framed and have it on the wall at uni, I think. They're my best friends and I'm going to miss them like hell so I'm so glad I've got a photo of us all together on a fantastic day. I wish my sociology teacher had been in it; I was almost going to suggest it because she was standing right there with us, but I thought the others might not want her in it. I wish I had now.

Tonight I went to an 18th birthday party for a cousin of one of my best friends. I met a really nice girl called Clare. We had conversations about books in front of a bonfire, and had fun in the dark when everyone else disappeared. She gave me her number. Eeeeeeee.

Okay I suppose we can start this sad business here.

The long and the short of it is that no one wanted to know this, at all. You fit into these forums about as well as a member of Rock Bitch at a baptist preachers golden wedding anniversary celebration, and yet you keep insisting on pouring out the sad, pointless details of your life, which no one wants to hear. Not only this, but you manage to do it in a vaguely creepy way.

I'm not suggesting you improve, but merely that you stop, now.

The irony hurts, so, so bad.

Yes, you're angry at me for snickering at you. Okay, that's nice. Instead of throwing a big ol' snot all over in public, why don't you just PM me about it? I'm sure most everyone would appreciate it.

Edit: You're right, Slick vvvv It's just not much of an argument. He's just insulting me and I just wish he would go away.

Dude I am not going to take sides here but instead of hitting back and saying 'why not PM' why don't you just PM? I mean, whatever argument you guys are going on about doesn't particularly concern me but I just get irked at things on a procedural ground, so don't say 'hey don't be a whiner just PM me huh' because you could have just PMed him that.

Am I the only one here who can't tell if this is a serious argument or not?

Wow, Khar, you really do manage being a bitch fairly well, don't you?
Oh, the vicious irony.

EDIT::
Also, that energy drink has been around for a while.

I think I've hit the hatred quota for MTV. More on that later.

Folks.

I think I'm on my damned period or something. I gave the side panel to my mechanic to cut a window in, and I'm pissing myself about it not looking good, clean and professional. I'm raging over a botched download (understandably, so, I hope. it's supposed to take 12 hours), a girl I've liked for a while, who's literally just one year older than me posted this video on my Facebook wall, my sleep cycle is ruined (I am posting this as the sun rises), and I feel incredibly crappy over the above things, and others I care not to mention, and I know I shouldn't.

The flying fluff is wrong with me?

"it's fucking elegant."

I am going to single-handedly popularise this phrase in Sydney because it is goddamn awesome.

Last night I went out to celebrate the homecoming of my friend  Amber who has spent the last 6 months in Newfoundland. Lots of important things happened in her life while she was there and this was a nice way to catch up and hear about all of them. We invited a number of old school friends that we thought would be interested in knowing about her shenanigans. 2 of them turned up already drunk, and only talked to eachother and hardly acknowledged that we were there for the purpose of letting Amber know we missed her and were still actively involved in her life.

Amber was upset by this, so we told them we had to split and would see them later. We headed to another restaurant in the area and proceeded to drink lots of beer and have a wonderful time. That is, until these friends showed up and there was ensuing drama and I had to play the devil's advocate. I was glad to get the chance to ream this people out for certain behaviours of theirs, but I don't think the point got across. In the end I am not the bad guy to either side, so whatever.

I came home and Reed was still awake so we Skyped til WAY TOO LATE and then I went to bed and had to get up WAY TOO EARLY to have breakfast with my dad, who disappeared last week and as such we did not celebrate Father's day. He resurfaced though, and I am glad to have the opportunity to spend some time with him.

That was a long post. Sorry dudes.
