Today's question:
Would you rather be shot down by:
a. Delilah laughing at you.
b. Faye punching you.

Faye punching me would be kinda hot.

I kinda concur, but it might get old after a while.

Re: "it's hard to be a guy" -- It's hard to be a person, just in general. Life isn't easy.

Seriously though, about the comic, that smirk on Marten's face in the third panel says, to me, "That was a joke." I dunno. I just can't see it any other way.

Marten's taken-aback look at her laughter makes me pretty sure he wasn't "JK".  He may be able to laught it off as a joke, but no, it wasn't initially meant that way.

I think that, given what we saw of their interaction during the party, that Deliah had the only logical reaction to Marten's come on.

And he deserved it.

Would people be calling Marten "pathetic" if Delilah actually agreed to it?

Serious question.

Of course not. I suspect though, that many of us would be stunned if it had worked. Maybe including Marten himself.

But this is the kind of move more confident guys make all the time, the difference is, many of them just brush off the failures, fully expecting such lines to not always work. Also, as links to previous strips in this thread have shown, Marten joked around like that with Faye on a fairly regular basis.

I don't think Marten's approach was "pathetic" or "sad" or "douchey"... He's just flirting in his dorky half-joke, half-serious way. It could have gone either way, if Delilah was into him she probably would have thought it was cute and the reactions here would be very different ;)

Hey, at least he tried!

  • Grammar is not half as important as clarity.

how does this thread have three pages already?

Two reasons:

1. We're finally seeing Marten, our ostensible protagonist, in a situation we've never really seen him in. And his behavior, especially today, invites all sorts of speculation that gets to the root of his character.

2. After the unspeakably uninteresting and interminable Dale/Marigold storyline, this arc seems absolutely fascinating.

One more thing about Marten's (attempt at) flirtation today: The QC cast has a longstanding habit of using "makeouts" as a sort of cutesy noun, generally in place of the more awkward verb construction. E.g. "You could repay me with makeouts" instead of "You could repay me by making out with me." While this is clearly an accepted phrase in Marten's social circle, I can definitely imagine it being offputting to someone else, especially someone on the receiving end of an already-awkward overture. Especially if that overture is coming from a dude who insisted on hanging around despite insistence that it's not necessary. If we didn't know that Marten is a fundamentally decent dude, this whole scenario would seem hella creepy.

Funny; I'd say the opposite: He may have meant it that way, but there's no way he'll be able to laugh it off as a joke now.

See, she's already decided he was serious.  And she laughed.  Either of those, Marten could have handled.  He's woefully unprepared for both.

I stand by my preferred prediction that Delilah and Marten will just have a nice conversation in which she'll give him some insightful outsider's perspective.

This.  And to be honest, Marten didn't really want makeouts with Delilah.  He just wanted a good time to forget his troubles.  Besides she might bat for the other team.

If so, why did Tai not warn him?

She did. That look on Friday said it all.

Here's a cringe-inducing scenario which has been foreshadowed.

Imagine Marten at a party with his mother as wingman. She told Tai it was a possible professional service, though utterly out of Tai's price range. For family and her chance of grandchildren she might do it free, as she started to do on her last visit.

If that didn't put Marten in therapy nothing would.

Ew, Marten.  Just... ew.

I'm giving this the benefit of the doubt, and we'll see what tomorrow's comic brings.  But based just on this strip, ugh.  Implying a woman owes you sexual favours because you did her a favour she didn't ask for is just all kinds of gross.

I'm pretty sure he doesn't actually believe she owes him sexual favours. He was joking around, and awkwardly attempting to try a new method of meeting women since his previous technique has not been all that successful. This one was also doomed to fail (we knew that, surely?!) but I'm impressed he tried.

It may be significant that it was Delilah who actually suggested, to Marten's embarrassment, that Tai had brought him to get laid - and then it's Delilah that he tries it on with.  He might have taken a too specific message from her earlier remark.

No, I don't think he actually believes it, either, which is why I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt here.  But he certainly implied it.  His wording is "You can pay me back with makeouts" which yeah, says she "owes" him.  Is that the message he intended to get across?  Maybe, maybe not.  We won't know until tomorrow at the earliest.

I sort of feel like this comic is just the most shining recent example of the bigger picture when it comes to Marten. I know I'm exaggerating here, but can he be introduced to a girl without trying to hook up with her right away? Maybe he's overcompensating because of the whole thing with Faye. It just seems that, outside of his immediate circle of female friends, every woman he meets is someone he's hoping will save him from the misery of being lonely. I don't think he has any genuine interest in Delilah; she just happened to be the only female at the party to really talk to him, so he latched on to her.

And I kind of feel like this is all a symptom of a much bigger problem, which is that Marten seems to be completely without direction in his life. I don't really pay attention to this forum much and I'm sure it's been discussed elsewhere, but this guy is going absolutely nowhere in his life. When you strip out all the funny from the comic, it's depressing.

Let's see... Women with whom Marten has tried to hook up more-or-less immediately: Delilah, Padma (50% success rate, so far)
Women with whom Marten took his time: Dora, Faye (again, 50% success rate)
Women with whom Marten has never, ever tried anything: Pretty much all of the others

That's hardly trying to hook up with every woman he meets.

The problem is Martin doesn't take himself seriously, and lacks in self confidence. Lets leave aside his mom's occupation for this. He came all the way from California for a gf who ended up leaving him, leaving him alone in a new place. His first major interest in the QC story reciprocated interest but rejected him based on personal issues (understandable) which were later solved (more like progress made) but then Angus came along. His relationship with Dora was not of any effort on his part, he was oblivious about her feelings until she kissed him on the rooftop.

Tbh, I would be insulted if someone described me as a pushover and his partial acceptance of the term shows his lack of confidence which is why I believe she laughed at him after the makeout statement. And why wouldn't she? It is creepy to make such a statement when you have already set yourself up like he did earlier in the party, it makes you seem desperate when you have admitted your timidity.

This is not me saying he needs to become the "alpha male" that certain people on a certain website seem to glorify, but he needs to start believing he is worthy of a relationship before he can attempt at making one. Obviously, we know he admitted to Tai before the party that he doesn't even know what he wants right now. His attitude is that by being laid back he will just fall into a long lasting and rewarding relationship, that just doesn't really happen and he should have taken a lesson when his relationship with Dora failed, but didn't.

That is it for me over analyzing a webcomic. I am open to changing my views on things if anyone disagrees with this assessment.

I read that as "overanalyzing" and of course that's how we got into three pages. All on the basis of one strip. If that's the end of the arc, then maybe it merits so much analysis. And if it isn't?

Well, it seems to have brought out some new people. Welcome!
