Panel two's kind of adorable. She seems genuinely pleased at the idea that he wants to make out with her.

The problem is Martin doesn't take himself seriously, and lacks in self confidence. Lets leave aside his mom's occupation for this. He came all the way from California for a gf who ended up leaving him, leaving him alone in a new place.

Which is what led him to meeting all the people he knows right now.  Better to accept what has happened an appreciate what came of it than to dwell on any "mistakes" you've made.

I'm not sure I agree with that.  I believe that part of becoming confident is accepting that you as well as those around you have flaws, so you might as well accept them and occasionally "embrace" them.  Otherwise, you're stuck fighting with yourself trying to be perfect, even though the reality is that being somewhat of a pushover is something quite a few people deal with.  It doesn't keep them from living happy, fulfilled lives.

  • I'm a bandicoot!

So, there's an old Road Runner/Coyote cartoon where the Coyote orders a "Bat-Man Suit" from the Acme Products Company. He puts it on, jumps off a cliff, and plummets towards the rocks below... only to pull out of his death dive at the last second and start flying like a real pro.

And then crash into a hoodoo because he's not looking where he's going.

Don't know what prompted me to bring this up at this particular moment. Really, no idea. I had a point, but it seems to have slipped my mind.

Good for Marten for taking the shot! I actually didn't think it was a bad line at all, just playful flirtation.

That was a masterful display of suspenseful trickery on Jeph's part, I'm sure this entire thread is stunned right now.

Yeah in fairness this is not the kind of move that a guy like Marten should be going for.

I think it might be because it came from a guy like Marten that it worked.

From a smooth, confident guy, a line like that is overly forward and usually kinda gross.  But from an awkward-but-sweet guy who's clearly not a player, it could be endearing.  It doesn't come across as tacky and crude, but as a really clumsy expression of attraction from a nice guy who's not quite sure how  to express attraction but means well.

Marten has been creeping away from being directionless. He has a career path now, granted one that Tai imposed on him, and is beginning to take the band seriously.

The 'crippling catch' is just going to be that she likes to have fun here and there, but not interested in a relationship.

Well obviously, it worked out for him in the end, so take what I said with a big grain of salt. I still don't think that kind of thing would work outside of the QC world. It may just depend from person to person, some might interpret being *that* comfortable with your flaws as being complacent in not improving yourself, which to be fair is something that people in this forum have been complaining about Martin, right?

Either way, i'm happy martin is getting some. Now if only I could find myself in the situation portrayed in that last panel...

It's not really about the relationship, it's about getting laid apparently...nothing meaningful, nothing long-lasting. Just sex.

Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. There seems to be an agreement here that Marten should be more active and not always wait for the woman to take the initiative. But when he does take the initiative, he is a douche, or at least awkward, and should be aware that a woman will usually give some kind of signal if she would welcome an advance.

Well, it turned out OK this time. At least in the short term.

I stand by my preferred prediction that Delilah and Marten will just have a nice conversation in which she'll give him some insightful outsider's perspective.

This.  And to be honest, Marten didn't really want makeouts with Delilah.  He just wanted a good time to forget his troubles.  Besides she might bat for the other team.

If so, why did Tai not warn him?

She did. That look on Friday said it all.

Quite the opposite. The look says that she expects them to have sex.

Well I found her timing absurdly fickle at first. So I tried to make sense of it and that's how I came up with this idea.

a woman will usually give some kind of signal if she would welcome an advance.
I keep hearing of this "signal" stuff and I still don't get what the fuck it is about. The only signals I've ever been able to detect are those of hostility.

I once had a woman give me her phone number and try to braid my hair. She's also said "I love you" about four times. I'm not sure what any of that means.

I love it!

Sometimes, when you've been passive your whole life and you *finally* step up to the plate, it doesn't really matter how inept your attempt was.  Sometimes life says "Y'know what?  Fuck it.  This one is on me." Just to make sure you keep trying.  Of course, sometimes life likes to smash shit horribly, but the golden moments of "FUCK YES" are what we live for.

Watching people and trying to make out what they are to each other is fun! It's like shipping, but with real people you will most likely never see again!
