It says something about the lopsided nature of the contest that more people are talking about the multilingual Coke commercial today than about the actual game.

Nope, that's about right for a Super Bowl...it's been more about the commercials than the actual game for at least 20 years if not longer.

The trophy wasn't given a name until Super Bowl V, when it was called the Vince Lombardi Memorial Trophy, after the deceased former head coach of the Packers and Redskins, and patron saint of Football, gruffness, and generally being a goddamn American.Unlike many other trophies, the Lombardi Trophy isn't a traveling trophy; the NFL makes copies of it for each Super Bowl.

Of course, the Stanley Cup wasn't created by owners of sports teams, so there's that.

Even though I love football and I'm a big baseball fan, the Stanley Cup >>>>>>>>>>>>>> the Lombardi Trophy >>> the Commissioner's Trophy.

I honestly didn't even know there was a trophy for winning the World Series.

Yes, yes, we know. Come on, my good man, I'm from WISCONSIN. "Lombardi" still evokes thoughts of success, winning, pride, and superiority.

Yeah, it's that weird trophy with 30 flagpoles and pennants atop each one.

Commissioner's Trophy:

O'Brien Trophy:

Lombardi Trophy:

Lord Stanley's Cup:

Please keep in mind - the Stanley Cup is not shown to scale, because it is HUGE.

I've never really had the "root for the local team just because they're the local team" thing. I mean, it's sort of what I do for baseball, but the only team I actually care that much about is almost 2000 miles away from me.

you guys, if your answer to 'what was the best commercial' wasn't 'the one where the dad saves the son hella times' you are wrong

I was really pissed every time I saw a Super Bowl commercial that was already used as an ad on YouTube

I've noticed a change in the genre of commercials.  90's Super Bowl commercials often relied on slapstick, while newer commercials are more dramatic.

One for each team in the league, pennants have been strongly linked to baseball for decades with the two teams earning pennants for winning their respective leagues.

not all of em, Method. most were not. but the Jaguar English-people-as-Hollywood-villains one, the Budweiser soldier's welcome one, and the Chevy "I Believe In Miracles" cow breeding one were all released early, and it pissed me off royally to have spoilers for the best advertising I'm gonna see all fucking year.

A small note to our friends not in the US and Canada: what happened on that first play by the Broncos is not supposed to happen.

As a longtime fan of the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes in the GFL, you don't say...

It was great to find some other people here who also know a bit more about football. I taught a good friend of mine the most basic rules before the game, so he would at least understand what was going on. He was very happy about it. And after the first twelve seconds of the game I was glad I had explained what a Safety is as well.

I have a mental block about football.  I can't understand the rules to save my life, no matter how many times they were explained.

I think it has to do with HS gym.  The only thing we did outdoors was football.  I transferred in, and had never been exposed to the game (my junior high was all about soccer).

Was thrown on the front line with absolutely no explanation of jack shit.  Got pummelled, had no idea WTF I was supposed to be doing, watching, objectives, rules, nothing.

I hate the game.  Literally.

My middle school gym teacher did that too. It was flag football, no tackle, but still - he assumed we all knew the rules already and just said "blah blah counts as a first down, GO!"

Football has plenty of obscure rules that the majority of casual fans don't know about.

For example, most people think the clock stops when the ball carrier runs out of bounds, but this is only true in the last 2 minutes of the first half, the last 5 minutes of the second half, and the last 5 minutes of any overtime period.  During the rest of the game, the clock is paused until the umpire spots the ball.

Whoa, apparently there are umpires. Weird, I thought "umpire" just meant "baseball referee".

Referee, umpire, line judge, side judge, field judge, back judge, and head linesman.  Each has their own function, and Wikipedia is your friend.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_%28American_football%29

In baseball the home plate umpire (or umpire-in-chief) used to be referred to as the referee because he also had to keep score.

The original rules of basketball stipulated the use of an umpire and a referee.

Pretty much the perfect response. Still bummed that the Broncos lost, but I can't be mad about this:

Oh, no, I think it was incredibly classy of Sherman. It is the best kind of reply to that kind of thing, akin to Patrick Roy and his "Stanley Cup rings" comment.
