Let's brainstorm for the poll. My contribution: "ANAL WAFFLES" should be the last option. Because of reasons.

I added the poll. I typed "I" and that filled in, apparently I've made that the poll before. So...sure, why not. (Also, implied in the question is "not counting Masterpiece")

A sensor is flipped and LEDs light up?
In this case, a sensor of excitement. Though, Dale, it is kind of really creepy to watch someone while they sleep. Even if Marigold is beautiful. That doesn't erase the creepiness. Or the lack of consent.
But yeah. I'm going with sensors.

Her old chassis used to sweat ("MY SOCIAL PROTOCOL DATABASE STRONGLY SUGGESTS NOT FINISHING THAT SENTENCE!").

I assumed Momo was so moved by his emotion that she was suggesting they wake her up and juice her with Red Bull so they could go on the date after all. But Dale staying awake works too.

I don't know. It's just a bit squicky to me when someone watches another person sleep?

I must say I also always had a bit of trouble understanding why exactly people are so squicked by the idea, so I am looking forward to hearing an explanation!
Of course, I still feel a bit creepy when watching people sleep, and I respect their wishes in that regard.
That said, I tried spending extended amounts of time watching my girlfriends at the time sleep, and quite frankly, I'd get bored after a few minutes :D (no offense, D, if you are reading this.) People are only really interesting to me if they act.

At some point, Marigold will wake up, see Dale sitting asleep on the couch and (after an optional brief freak-out) lean on him before falling asleep again.

Well, this line of conversation inspired me to write a poem about this topic as it relates to me.

If it's my boyfriend, I don't mind. It seems sweet. He's probably thinking about how I seem so harmless and peaceful I am when I'm not awake. My neuroses have to be exhausting for him.

What I'm getting at is that context is important!
Dale is aware that he could seem creepy even though he's touched by how adorable Mar-Bear can be. It's different than, say, a particular vampire going into the room of someone who thinks he hates her and watching her sleep for hours and even fixing the squeakiness of her window so she won't hear him sneaking in. Just, you know, plausibly...

[[RED TEXT EDIT: St. Clair beat me to the reference! Dang. :psyduck:]]

Marigold really wants him there. I think she'd get flustered and flattered if she could have heard Dale say what he did. She didn't want him out of her sight. I don't think she'd have a problem with him doing the same!

I do think there's a limit, though. It's one of those "YMMV" things, but I do think there's a point at which you should probably stop watching someone sleep, even if they're okay with it. Doing it for the length of allergy-medication-induced sleep might be a bit much.

I think Momo just experienced a severe "social database cant find this situation" error ?

Also, whow thread. What the frak is the problem with enjoying watching your relationship partner sleep. Okay, they kind of very early in the relationship, but I think its a good sign Dale is thinking of watching Marigold in the sleep. It means he really likes her.

Why does the robot blush?  More to the point:  how does a robot blush?
The only purpose would be to interact better with humans. It is part of the overall body language that she is equipped to display (in accordance with her social interaction database). The database seems comprehensive, I really could need a copy.

As to how: LEDs would give emissive light, whereas natural blushing is reflective light. I would guess some reflective change in her artificial skin, perhaps triggered by a small electric field. Same principle as LCD displays.

Obviously, Momo is engineered to be very human in appearance. She has even fooled humans on several occasions (Padma, Sam, and Hannelore).

EDIT: Hannelore of course knows that Momo is a robot. But in the situation linked above, she was forgetting. This means that Hannelore does not really think of Momo as a robot. I would guess this is because of Momo's human appearance, it is difficult to forget that Pintsize is a robot  :-D

Yeah. It will help appease Marigold's anxieties/self-loathing/whatever if Dale is still there, when she wakes up. Creepy? Not unless he can't resist and cops a feel.

Poll option? "Only if Marigold is dreaming."

A romantic gesture, sure. Sounds creepy, but I think I can probably figure what Dale is trying to mean.

It would be more appropriate for Dale to say that he is happy just to enjoy Marigold's company.

Wait. Is that an improvement?

Given Momo's electronic self-defense capability, Dale will not have any chance to do anything inappropriate, even if he was so inclined (which he is not). That is, unless Momo's social interaction database deems it appropriate  :-D

EDIT: Oops, the correct term is social protocol database. Another observation: Before Momo got her new body, she had square speech bubbles (meaning artificial ?), whereas now they are rounded (that is, same as humans). I suppose this means that Momo's voice now is indistinguishable from a human voice.

People, watching people sleeping is just like any other sexual or loving act. It's creepy outside of context. Be pretty creepy to kiss a stranger on the neck in the queue at the supermarket but I'm guessing most sexual partners would love it.

I'm quoting myself here, because I did some research. It appears that AnthroPC speech bubbles changed from square (artificial) to rounded (human) during an extended period where AnthroPCs were absent from the series. More precisely, in 1921 they were square, and in 1994 they were rounded. This corresponds to 15 weeks (our time).

Either Jeph forgot that AnthroPCs used to have square bubbles, or there was some software upgrade in this period that improved AnthroPC speech to human sounding quality. But this momentous event ought to have been documented?

EDIT: Dang. That is not correct either. Pintsize still has square bubbles. Perhaps Momo got the software upgrade, but not Pintsize?

I'm more concerned actually for Marigold. She's been socially awkward for god knows how long, so being in a date with Dale is a big shock to her it seems. Remember, this is a person who actually loathed the other over a MMO, and both antagonized each other and their first time together......was the equivalent of a shotgun wedding courtesy of Momo. And look how that turned out.

As much as Marigold has improved in not being socially awkward, ya can't exactly erase it all in one swoop. I imagine there will still be some lingering doubts here and there, even if Momo can vouch in the positive for Dale.

As I have mentioned earlier, the Momo/Marigold companionship must be there for a reason. Momo has a mission to improve Marigold's life (because that is what she wanted to do). This is implemented by a combination of suggestions, threats, advice, comforting, and manipulation.

The big differences that make the whole 'watching her sleep' a little bit creepy is that they are not in a stage of the relationship yet where that would not be creepy. IE they haven't been sleeping together. This is in fact their first official date so... And the other side is that this isn't just a 'they've been up all night and she dozed off' situation. She's in a drug-induced unconscious state and is particularly helpless. If she was alone of course. The fact that Momo is there takes about 95% of the creepy out of it. And Dale realizes that it could come off kinda creepy, which is a good thing. So it really just comes off to me as charmingly adorkable.

I think it would be creepier if Momo hadn't let him in. If he had just followed high-Marigold in and watched her sleep, that would be creepy (unless maybe he was watching to make sure she didn't stop breathing, since he wouldn't know what was wrong with her). But right now, he's in the main room of her house, she's fully clad, they're chaperoned (I don't think he'd do anything otherwise, but it removes potential threat), etc, and he's just happy to be around her, not getting off on watching her sleep it off.

I'm assuming he'll forgo the energy drinks and also fall asleep, and maybe a Marten Claire parallel as above.

 I like Sleeping Booty. But covering her up would block the nice view. However, if it is the proper thing to do, and if she gets less freaked out when she awakens, then I tend to agree.

The only purpose would be to interact better with humans. It is part of the overall body language that she is equipped to display (in accordance with her social interaction database).
In Mass Effect, Legion outright states that its body has been fitted with eyebrow-like facial features for the very purpose of better interacting with organics.

I just felt like geeking out on this barely-relevant point. Sorry.

What I'm getting at is that context is important!
Dale is aware that he could seem creepy even though he's touched by how adorable Mar-Bear can be.
His aknowledging it being potentially creepy out of context goes a long way, but seriously Dale should relax. He's not some random creep who sneaked in to peek on a sleeping woman. He's speaking of a woman who invited him to take her out on a date. A woman who clinged to him when he told of leaving. A woman he already made out with.
And he's just saying he's just as happy watching her sleep quietly instead of anything else happening.
Dale dude, give yourself some credit.

Lets hope he doesn't overdose on the energy drinks and wind up being zombified.

Watching someone sleep is different from kissing someone on the neck because it doesn't involve any kind of physical contact. I've watched people sleep who aren't my partners (friends, family members, people I'm looking after in some way or another). Dale was invited over, invited in, and is now keeping an eye on a friend who is not entirely with it, whilst admittedly being happy to spend time near her. I don't think it's creepy, I think it's sweet. Momo's presence as a chaperone of sorts seems relevant to my opinion, I think.

Quote
He lay, often, looking at her sleeping face in the new light that fell in through the open walls of the strange house, and he stared at her skin and hair with his mouth open, transfixed by the quick stillness of her, struck dumb with the physical fact of her existence as though she was some careless star-thing that slept on quite unaware of its incandescent power; the casualness and ease with which she slept there amazed him; he couldn’t believe that such beauty could survive without some superhumanly intense conscious effort.
