Ah, you are talking about 2048.
As I am surrounded by comp-sci students, I got word of it a few days ago. So far, I have been successfully resisiting the urge to play it.

Yeah I don't get that either. It's quiet, not quite.

Quaht.

Seriously, you know perfectly well that in poetry or singing, syllables with multiple vowels like that are often elided (in the past, even those with consonants - in the music of Byrd and Tallis for instance, the word "spirit" is set as a single syllable, like "sprite", though not so spelt).

2048...  Yes, quite!

After reading about the game in this thread, I just got up to 256 and now I've managed to stop playing. As if wasting time on the internet hadn't been easy enough already...

So Jeph has fallen into the same trap as I.

Yep. Damn you Randall Munroe! I'd never have known about that game if you hadn't brought it up!

Me too. I wonder how many players that strip has provided for the site.

I've made it to 1024 twice, BTW.

I seem to be late to the party this week.
I saw that game pop up on imgur and went, NOPE, wont touch this.

As for putting Poetry into a lucrative commercial endeavour, all I can think of is advertising with its jingles and sound bites or song lyrics.

Ah, we're still on 2048. I'd advise anyone who values their time to stay away from it.
I've found a good tactic and have gotten to 2048 twice now - although I will freely admit that I used a version where you can go back if you make a mistake.
Now that I've managed to do it, I'll (hopefully) stop for good.

A friend of mine is working on finishing 4096. I spent a lot of time with various variations of the game. My favourites so far are Doge2048 (:wow:) and 16384 Hexagon.

I came so, so close to making it to 4096 this morning. I had a 2048 tile, and a 1024 next to it, and a 512 next to that. Then everything went to hell.  :grumpypuss:

2048

Edit: goddamnit, why did you guys have to mention it, now I've started playing again. And promptly got to a wonderful 1024, 512, 256, 128 in the bottom row and with two 64s in the third row. And I fucking lost again. I was that close...

Second Edit: after getting to the same position a second time without winning I finally fucking won.

Faye will kill Angus and she will keep his corpse (preserved through little-used taxidermy skills she got in her art classes in college) and she will be heard muttering "you aren't leaving me this time" as she pickles herself continuously with Old Hobo or an equivalent rotgut. Or she leaves for New York with Angus and gets written out of the strip.

Is 2048 now a craze because of Randall, or did Randall draw it because it was a craze? Or just because he happens to be obsessed by it, and incidentally it is currently a craze? And does Randall make money from product placement? If not, maybe he should.

I haven't started playing 2048, nor did I get caught up in the flappy bird craze.

According to Jeph's Twitter account, "You will HATE Friday's strip." Either something horrible will happen, or more likely, Claire will make puns.

You really think that Jeph's going to predict hatred of the comic if Claire makes a pun? I know he doesn't generally visit the forums, but seriously.

My guess: Marten will do something idiotic.

I think 2048 was a minor craze before Randall put it in xkcd, but now a whole lot more people know about it so it's an even bigger craze now. So it's like a chicken that laid some eggs that hatched into more chickens. Or the other way around. I never can tell.

yeah, 2048 was featured in hackernews long before the xkcd. And yes, the numberwang variant is great. I found it before the 16384 Hexagon variant.

And no, Randall doesn't earn anything from mentioning it. 2048 is open source. There are no ads. Nobody's earning money from it. Except maybe github, as it's hosted there.

Pleeeeeeze don't let that be the last we see of Wil & Jimbo together.  They haven't even gotten to their common literary theme of throbbing man-parts.

"highly successful ... because he writes utter trash" ... we need Sven in this mix.  Would he hit it off with Jimbo right away, or would they be natural rivals?  Either could be nothing less than entertaining.

Hee hee hee.  We must see this.

Marten must either drink a lot faster than Steve and Angus, or be a two-pot screamer.

Jimbo should become Wil's mentor in a new career as a best-selling author of quasi-pornographic romance novels.
