Curiously, the pronunciation of Ankansas is something I've known pretty much forever.  I've no idea why, though.

Even weirder, Bar Harbor, Maine, is natively pronounced with precisely zero "R" sounds.
To be fair, everything is pronounced that way in Maine. So pronouncing it like it looks isn't incorrect, it's just not using the local accent.

I learned it from watching old cartoons on TV, specifically "Wacky Races". One of the competitor cars was the Arkansas Chuggabug.

Literally exactly how I learned it.

Also most American geography I know I learned from professional wrestling because their show is constantly touring.

Genitalia doesn't necessarily tell the whole story (as we should know well in this forum).
True that, but hyenas (after reading the article, I had to read up on their reproduction) are a bit more ambiguous than most other mammals.  The very thought of having to eject offspring from my bits made me cringe.

Last week at trivia, one of the questions was ~"which is the only state to have a law about the pronunciation of the state's name" and I correctly guessed it was Arkansas.

You really don't need to know how to pronounce Arkansas. That would require the state being relevant as anything but a cautionary tale.

I still don't even know what the fuck catnip IS.
A hell of a drug, obviously.
But seriously, it's an otherwise quite mundane plant, called "cat's mint" in German. It is mostly known for making cats high, for reasons not quite clear to science.

So try not to take anything too seriously okay? And have that extra cup of tea and extra long moment to yourself. You deserve it!

It is worth noting that the bulk of famine in the world is not caused by a lack of food but intentionally by people.

What is weird about that? I pronounce Bar Harbor as "Baa Haaba" because non-rhotic is how we roll down here.

The weird part for me is that I was taught by french canadian teachers, who feel that even the strongest pronunciation of the letter R in english is far too weak.  In French, R is practically a hard consonant.

i always figured ya'll just couldn't afford the letter R down there, what with import tariffs, & shipping, &  whatnot.

how do you even pronounce 'non-rhotic' in a non-rhotic way? seems like some linguist may have been playing a cruel joke there.

admittedly, exactly the same kind of joke i would play, were i a linguist.

Skipping all the oral sex references, my dad used to tell a tiny joke about linguists. It can't be translated, by me, because I just tried and it once again proves that I shouldn't translate anything but the upshot of the thing was that linguists talk bull.
