To be fair, everything is pronounced that way in Maine. So pronouncing it like it looks isn't incorrect, it's just not using the local accent.

I learned it from watching old cartoons on TV, specifically "Wacky Races". One of the competitor cars was the Arkansas Chuggabug.

Also most American geography I know I learned from professional wrestling because their show is constantly touring.

True that, but hyenas (after reading the article, I had to read up on their reproduction) are a bit more ambiguous than most other mammals. The very thought of having to eject offspring from my bits made me cringe.

The weird part for me is that I was taught by french canadian teachers, who feel that even the strongest pronunciation of the letter R in english is far too weak. In French, R is practically a hard consonant.
