Due to the convenient page break I'm going to amuse myself by pretending that's general life advice, rather than a specific response to something.

That's awesome! I hadn't heard three of the words, but it wasn't hard to figure out how they should be pronounced because it's written so well. I'll have to get my English tutee to try it.

Bikes are slow.

If it can't go mach 2 you're not having fun.

In Canada news:

Quote
Starting at 10:30 this morning, members of 1st Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (1 PPCLI), on behalf of the Regiment, will exercise their right to the Freedom of the City of Edmonton. They will march downtown with ceremonial Colours flying and bayonets fixed. Edmonton Police Service Pipes & Drums will march and perform. Lieutenant-Colonel Nick Grimshaw, Commanding Officer of the Battalion, will lead the parade that will be overseen by Mayor Don Iveson at City Hall.

Freedom of the City is the highest honour a municipality can grant a military unit and is said to originate from Roman times. In a few hours from now, it will be an entirely ceremonial honour bestowed upon 1 PPCLI, which has historic connections to the Edmonton and surrounding communities.

What's really striking to me about those photos isn't the men or the trenches, but the devastation around them... and yet if you look at the same terrain today... you can't even see it. Belleau Wood renamed "Bois de la Brigade de Marine" ("Wood of the Marine Brigade") after the action that cemented it in my own tribe's legends... the fighting was brutal, incredibly destructive, looking at photos of the Argonne there's barely any sign of the forest left now the Argonne is lush, verdant and growing again...

That is all a matter of your chosen perspective. The scars are actually still quite visible after nearly a century:

It is only generally in cities that the marks are erased by redevelopment. The destruction wrought by the Battle of Shanghai (August-November 1937 - Sometimes known as "Stalingrad on the Yangtze", except the good guys lost this one...), for example, has been largely wiped away in my hometown's breakneck development.Somewhere in that catastrophe are my grandparents...
