http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banksy
Banksy is a graffiti artist who does political satire with his awesome work. I think the mario shirt is a double pun because I've seen that orginal image before, except it's a revolutionary getting ready to throw a molotov cocktail. The Banksy version replaces it with a flower... then we have Mario getting ready to throw a fire flower...

He's an irritating but very famous graffiti artist who I personally find pretty overrated. I do like Masterpiece's shirt purchase though. His shurchase, if you will.

Let me Google that for you.

Everytime I see this... I just immediately read it as "Let me be an asshole in a round about way of attempting to answer your question"

I didn't google it because I wasn't that interested... if no one replied of what it was.. oh well.. I didn't need to know anyway.

Well there is a lot of hype about him and people pay vast amounts of money for his artwork because of his name rather than his talent.

That would be a tremendous dick move, and would most likely result in the other students making your life hell for the rest of your time there.

Repeatedly asking a question you don't want an answer to is also being an asshole in a round about way.

Do not fall in love with people like me.
I will take you ro museums, and parks and monuments,
and kiss you in every beautiful place,
So that you can never go back to them without tasting me
Like blood in your mouth.
I will destroy you in the most beautiful way possible
and when I leave you will finally understand,
Why storms are named after people.

His art is very sarcastic and smug but most of the time doesn't actually say anything. The cleverest thing about him is keeping his identity secret in the modern age. Most of his art is just student-level posturing with no meaning.

Ooh look a shot from Pulp Fiction with bananas instead of guns!

...Which means what, exactly? Just 'LOL' as far as I can tell.

Isn't that most modern art?

It's most art, something that I've been delving into a lot lately given my girlfriend is an artist, and I'm finding the stuff that actually has got something to say to be really fascinating.

Art doesn't even need to have a point, but Banksy's stuff really really thinks it does have a point and yet rarely ever does.

Yup... still not helping.. who is Banksy?  All I'm getting right now is some gangmember guy that likes to throw things :/

Banksy is a street-artist with a penchant for putting up the graphical equivalent of satirical one-liners in appropriate/inappropriate places. Some of his work is just meh, like he's just phoning it in, while other pieces just make me laugh with glee even as I realise he's obliquely pointing out something that's pretty fucking sad, both as a well- (and audaciously) placed sign of dissent as well as an attempt to laugh at something to that would otherwise make you cry.

I think that some of his most highly-valued pieces are indeed overrated pieces of absurdist or quasi-philosophical blah. That is to say, I wouldn't pay that much for them if I had the money :o paying millions of dollars to purchase these pieces is kinda like buying a tiger for your Beverly Hills villa. That's not where it belongs and it's just uglified by your purchase ya tasteless tit :o

But, with that said... who am I to judge? Different artists express different things in different ways, and each of us find different things to appreciate in their works for different but mostly legitimate reasons. We're not all going to appreciate the same things in the same ways for the same reasons. I often greatly enjoy watching immigrant comedians whose humor is centered on ethnic/cultural differences and the absurd experiences of immigrants in Sweden. So do many of my non-immigrant friends, but I suspect I enjoy this kind of comedy more--and for very different reasons. Others don't enjoy them at all, but enjoy comedy that I can't stand, most likely because that sort of boring comedy speaks to them in a way it doesn't speak to me.

I like some of the stencils Banksy put up on the West Bank barrier (such as the one that inspired the Mario t-shirt), even though I realize that reactions were mixed:

But I also simpler less audacious ones:

yup, IBS may actually be fixed due to this as well as some other diseases and illnesses.  You are basically transplanting the bacterial cultures of a healthy person into someone who's cultures are fucked up.  They then replicate and take over because they can feed and break down stuff better than the old ones.  Essentially starving out the bad ones. On top of that the cultures will become yours and will prevent further incidents.  I'm really glossing this over but its legit and totally worth looking into!

I think you're a bit harsh on him. I think he's funny and clever in his stencil pieces. He's basically telling good jokes on walls and no other graff artist is close to being as good as that. The museum pieces are less funny but seem to have a bigger point and usually not bad ones.

Plus, I do the stencling thing too so I have to stick up for someone who is just better at it. Something to strive for.

But, as always, YMMV.

Fun fact: The state of Jefferson was almost created back in 1941.  Congress was suppose to announce the new state on Dec 8th...but then Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and it was pushed to the side and never revisited.
