"He remains the only man in history to have designed, built and driven a championship-winning car." :? :? :?

Jack Brabham was a remarkable man, and he contributed to the success of his team across a broader range than any other motor-racing champion, I think it is fair to say, but credit where credit is due. The Brabham F1 cars were mainly designed by fellow-Aussie Ron Tauranac, and their engines were designed (based on the Oldsmobile Jetfire V8 engine-block) and built by the engineers at Repco and the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation.

Yes, my Dad is an engineer, and I am interested in the history of technology and industry in Australia, why do you ask? :-D

What a great racer he was, I used to have a picture of him on my wall racing one of the Cooper's in the late 50's (I think it was '59). I do wish that the Brabham name was still associated with F1 as a team, but with only Williams currently existing as a full privateer now, it doesn't seem very likely to ever happen again.

Racing has gotten expensive, all around - regardless of type or division.

Depends at what level you're racing. It's always been an expensive sport, but that doesn't mean that it's totally closed off to everyone other than the super rich, just look at the Caterham series, and the vast amounts of classic car racing.
