Carl's doing his annual Kansas City convention (of math instructors grading AP calculus exams, IIRC) in June. He has a 2-hour layover at DTW. His flight's due in shortly after 1, scheduled departure at 3:30. I wouldn't miss the opportunity, and he'd be happy to meet anyone else within range. Kat&Steve? Anyone else?
I'm not quite sure where this will take place. There are plenty of good restaurants there, but they're all behind the security checkpoints. The only restaurant I can easily find outside them is at the airport Westin, and it's pretty pricey. There may be a coffee shop in the baggage claim area at McNamara Terminal. Otherwise, I'd propose to pick up a pizza, if we can find a bench. I'll try to scout it out.

He'll be pleased. He didn't know/forgot you were nearby.

Kat, do you have an opportunity to scout that terminal, or ask people who are more frequently passing through it than you or I? Specifically, I'm wondering if there's a Coffee Beanery & Tea Leaf at the baggage claim area, or any other place for a snack and a cup or a glass. The phone for the several Coffee Beanery locations rings to the company that operates the airport franchises, and no one's answering.

I found a map, and it looks like there is one:

It seems to be the only thing this side of the gates.

I'd say "I'm in," since I am off that week, but... Detroit?

It also would be easier for me to fly into DTW (direct flights to and from CWA), but prohibitively expensive ($1,028 one way? Uhm, no.).

Watch for fare sales. Go visit a friend in Milwaukee or Chicago, then just sort of pop over. Stay at my place in Reading. Is the ferry still running across the Lake?

It'd be 3 1/2 hours to the ferry, about 3 hours across, then another three to four hours to DTW.

And your problem is?

Well, I've been there. It's isolation. Watch for those fare sales. On the other hand, there are uncertainties at the DTW end. Carl's plane could be late.

Well, m-o-n-e-y is one.

I'm planning a flight out to Arizona in October to visit with the parental units on the wife's side (and my dad, who'll be out there by then).

Heh. I'll be going through the same airport June 2 (the same terminal even) on the way to Wisconsin. The layover is only 45 minutes, though.

Oh, dude, I have a WHOLE BUNCH of people spread out throughout the state (PHX, Tucson, Globe, etc.) that I've got to catch up with. A week might not be enough time.

Last call: I'm planning to pick up Kat and Steve in Ypsilanti and be at Detroit Metro's McNamara Terminal by 1 p.m.

It happened!

That's Redball, Steve (ex Ackblom), Kat (Papersatan) and Carl-E at Detroit Metro Airport. And OMG it was fun! It was Carl's first meetup with forum people, and he's as delightful in person as he's been on the QC forum. I hope he's able to return.
