Cleveland and Detroit regularly duel themselves as to which is the worst city in the US.

Detroit is currently ahead, but Cleveland has Johnny Manziel.

Birmingham isn't even in the top 10 having been there. It's sucky but compared to the Detroit war zone, Camden, the decaying husk of Wilmington, Delaware...

being in Cleveland Ohio is probably what kissing your second cousin at a family reunion is like, it only lasts a moment but the regret lasts a lifetime
I spent a pleasant night with a second cousin. Lots of hanky minus PIV panky, and it was sort of a lifetime ago -- Thanksgiving 1962 comes to mind. No regrets.

Oh sure, this was no Shakespearean/Henry Fielding hidden identity thing. I was spending Thanksgiving break from college at her parents' home, though they'd gone out of town. The cousin unexpectedly came home from her own college. I recall asking her if incest concerns bothered her. They did. That didn't bother me, but I understood.
There were  five buggies and 25-30 Amish folks. Unexpectedly, they brought cake and ice cream. Amish ice cream is hand made, chilled with ice they've stored since last winter's ice harvests in nearby lakes. The vanilla had a hint of vanilla; vanilla pudding mix was one of the ingredients. The strawberry was better, but not quite enough strawberries either for flavor or color.
A little like the cherry pies  from this family: Nice red filling, but sometimes without any cherries at all.
That's OK. A good time was had by all, and the dozen or more wet towels have been washed and dried. Along with some teenage girl's underskirt/slip.
Those teen girls don't have the modesty I'd expect from "English" girls their age. They wore white T-shirts over bare breasts and underpants, near as I could tell without leering, so areolae and bottoms are quite visible. They're obviously comfortable among family members, and my presence apparently didn't intrude.
But their moms didn't get in the pool this year. At their last visit, three of those women in their 30s did go in, passing over the shorts and shirts I thought they might wear instead of stuff from dresser drawers. Anna, I realized later, had worn my navy blue thermal underwear.

More specifically, a total of six Amish guys in 1999-2000 built a retaining wall adjacent to the pool and installed 900 square feet of pavers near it and extending round to the other side of the house. We invited their families to swim in 2000 and continued it most years since. Lots of shouting and splashing. The pool lost at least an inch of water yesterday.

That only works if the nonfunctional parts of each one don't coincide... if you can put together enough of each to get off the ground, the rest is gravy!

(Hey, if you've got a flying Harrier, will anyone really question whether the weapon systems work? )

Basically this.

I came to terms with there being nothing after death a long time ago. It was absolutely terrifying as a concept for 11-year old Luke.
But, if anything, it makes me appreciate the life I have even more.

Gnats.
Looked them up, and their appearance doesn't match. These things look nothing like flies, they're are about half as wide as a pinhead and about twice the length. They're completely black and appear to be wingless, and they're so small that they're practically invisible in flight.

It's funny, until today I always thought that gnats were small rodents, like gerbils. It's like a portmanteau of gnaw and rat.

I've never been able to shake some of the Christian teachings I learned since childhood, although I'm not a churchgoer. I've said this before elsewhere in the forum: When my wife of 40 years died in 2011, I realized that even if mankind had never invented religion, grieving people would have invented an afterlife as a matter of necessity. How can a person you love deeply just disappear?

How can a person you love deeply just disappear?

They don't.  They are with you, always.

No, I don't mean metaphysically or anything.  A love that deep changes you.  So long as you are who you are, the memory of that love survives within.

Yeah, not enough for some most.  That's why there's such a strong afterlife belief around the world.

Yet you can clearly see the wings on those, and they look about one and a half times as big as the bugs I'm seeing. They're also higher up on their legs, whereas these ones are totally flattened against the surface they're on.

This is bothering me more than it has any right to.

On her deathbed at 86, my Grandmother reiterated to me that there is nothing after life, that she would simply cease being. It was pretty damn unsettling coming from someone in that position. Intellectually I agree, emotionally, well, F that.

When I no more behold thee, think on me.
By all thine eyes have told me, think on me.
When hearts are lightest, when eyes are brightest, when griefs are slightest,
Think on me.

In all thine hours of gladness, think on me.
If e’er I soothed thy sadness, think on me.
When foes are by thee, when woes are nigh thee, when friends all fly thee,
Think on me.

When thou hast none to cheer thee, think on me.
When no fond heart is near thee, think on me.
When lonely sighing o’er pleasure flying,
When hope is dying,
Think on me.

There has been an odd smell in my flat for the last week or so and I haven't been able to find the source of it - I cleaned the fridge, emptied the bin, purged the drains, cleaned the bathroom and still didn't find it. Today, I did discover the problem. Did you know that cauliflowers rot from the inside out?

It would seem they are like brains in more than appearance.

Everything from my fridge is now out on the table or the worktop, because the freezer box was so iced up that the door wouldn't shut (this was the case when I moved in, I should have dealt with it sooner). Seems like a good time to scrub the thing and get the smell out for good.

I believe there is something after death, not something that preserves your consciousness like heaven, but I think something happens to you.

Maybe I'm just a romantic, maybe I just say this so my nightmarish anxiety about death and the apocalypse don't come leaking out from my childhood.

But in any case, I do know this: When you die, you will have affected the lives of all those you have ever loved and all that have loved you. I think if anything, you do live on, you live on in all the love you have ever shared with the world. This is the reason why I strive to express love freely and have sworn to fight against hate. It's why i have decided to leave my mark on the world through love and kindness.

(Oh dear, it would seem I'm getting sappy again. Forgive me, I'll go back and lurk in the shadows).

I agree. Would it apply to May's cauliflower, though?

Let me tell you what happens to cauliflowers after their death: they rot, and turn into a putrid ooze. Then they get scraped into a bag and thrown into a dustbin outside.
